Myriad Devils-Chapter 115: Five bases
Seth stood with his hands clasped behind his back, observing the jungle. The black aura that shrouded the mountain had dispersed once the Dreadwing Harbinger escaped, allowing him to have a great view of the Blood-Drip Jungle in its entirety.
There were many towering trees with blood-red leaves. It was a sight very common within this territory. But beyond just this ordinary view, there were many species of monsters maneuvering through the forest. Though they were far away from the mountain, Seth’s eyesight was not to be underestimated.
He could clearly see the nearest beast some miles away, and even beasts over ten miles away.
"Oh?" Seth rose an eyebrow in surprise at what he saw.
As he awaited Anon’s reawakening, he stood in one spot, looking into the distance for several hours. There, multiple beasts approached a particular direction before apparently perceiving something ’dreadful’, turning heels, and quickly distancing themselves.
’I wonder, is there another beast general only some miles away from this territory?’ Seth mused to himself.
After a while, the stellar cosmic energy in the atmosphere grew slightly chaotic. Sensing this, Seth turned around and approached the edge of the gorge. His gaze fell towards the very depths of the crater...
"Although this can be considered improvement, we’ll be leaving the Blood-Drip Jungle soon. He’s only broken through two layers of the second world. After we leave, his speed of improvement will be reduced significantly. And without life-and-death battles to help him consolidate his gains from the use of magic rituals, he’ll not be able to overuse them like I can." Seth said.
Shaking his head, he muttered under his breath, "Having him develop slowly is a joke. Those scoundrels are just as eager to grasp the opportunity of the crown, so I’m sure that man has manipulated his son’s route so it can be attracted as swiftly as possible. But there’s also his mother, I’m still disbelieving, but I really can’t read them both. This Anon, as much as I desire for him to awaken all three, he’s going to be a handful, I just know?"
Knowing things that others could not begin to fathom, Seth reviewed such knowledge and couldn’t help but release a defeated sigh. It was like being confident of completing a task, but knowing that said task was still going to be a pain in the ass...
Seth kissed his teeth and turned around, shifting his focus away from the boy below.
’If I gaze at him too much, my killing intent might just get the better of me.’ Seth thought with a subtle smirk on his face.
Once Anon appeared outside of the gorge, he approached Seth and stood by his side. For a moment, there was an odd silence shared between them as he joined in, observing the view that rested before his shimmering eyes.
The duo did not exchange words, nor did they need to exchange words.
As if they had a telepathic understanding of each other, they began simultaneously descending the mountain from the opposing side which they had previously ascended from.
Unlike the ascent up the mountain, the duo did not come face to face with any other lifeform.
Clearly, the commander beasts made up of darkness that they had previously came across were created by the Dreadwing, or at least, by the dark aura that originated from its body.
Now that this aura had dissipated due to the beast general’s absence, the mountain had been vanquished from any darkness, and the light cascading from the cosmic sky led the duo towards their goal.
As for what this goal was...
Now that they had acquired two treasures, azure plums which were mystic treasures, and clear heart crystals which happened to be magical items, rather than being satisfied, both Seth and Anon felt that this was a huge opportunity for the taking.
This feeling was further amplified after Anon’s strength had undergone ample improvement.
Confronting beast generals was bound to be slightly less difficult now.
...
They continued maneuvering through the Blood-Drip Jungle, and at the same time, the 18th of November, the day in which October’s assessment would officially end, drew closer.
The students of the military academy were tasked with venturing to a certain depth of the jungle, and once they arrived at this checkpoint, the main task of survival would begin. The bracelet on their wrist would’ve alerted them the moment that they had reached this checkpoint.
Naturally, due to the nature of their experiences, maybe besides only Seth, the group of stellar geniuses from Blackridge had not sensed the bracelet’s notification.
Anyway, the military student’s task was only to survive. Once the 18th of November arrived, they would’ve passed October’s assessment, and no matter what the situation that they found themselves in, once they were alive, they would return to the academy safely.
This was a promise made by the academy.
In truth, no matter how difficult the assessment was, for the most part, it was rare to find any deaths amongst the children of great and, or greater families.
After all, they were usually a head and a shoulder above the rest.
Using Catharina, and certain members from the group of inheritors as examples, evidently, the survival of children from great families was not something that was written down in stone.
It was not an inevitability that they would survive.
Inevitability was elusive in nature, and it was a concept that could not be truly grasped...
Seth happened to lead the way in the duo’s descent down the mountain, and then in the direction in which they headed once they had exited the mountain.
Anon did not resist and was instead intrigued.
To him, it appeared as if Seth had found the location of another beast general, so truthfully, he was pleased, and even excited.
Due to Seth’s arrogant nature, he did not take the Sky-grade anklets even though it had potential to evolve into an Arcane-grade magical item.
More importantly, amidst their decent, he opted to give Anon a greater share of the treasures that they had acquired from the Dreadwing Harbinger’s home.
Naturally, there was limited space inside the bracelet, so Anon could not hold everything he had come to own.
But with the combined space within two bracelets, these many treasures could be stored. If anything, Anon would simply attach the anklets onto his ankles to acquire more space if necessary.
And with the speed at which Seth moved, it appeared that such space would indeed be very necessary.
"Perhaps, did you sense a beast general’s aura? But we’ve been moving at high speed for over three miles." Anon curiously turned to Seth and asked.
Although their spirits were strong, allowing their perception to branch out and sense shifts in the atmosphere great distances away, they had already crossed a few miles, and Seth did not seem like slowing down.
Anon did not dare believe that Seth’s perception was strong enough to extend to several and tens of miles, and it wouldn’t even make any sense since Seth was still within the realm of reason, a part of the second world.
"Whilst you were breaking into the third layer, I was observing the forest." Seth began explaining the strangeness in the beasts’ movements more than ten miles away.
Once Anon understood the situation, his eyes shone with excitement. The two increased their speed by a notch or two, causing their auras to intensify, and leaving beasts shivering in fear as they ran passed them.
Still, there were beast commanders that sensed the stellar cosmic energy being utilized and launched attacks towards them.
Some of which, hit only the pair’s false bodies, whilst others died before they could conjure up an attack.
These beasts did not even know how they had died.
At the rate at which they moved, it did not take them long to cross the distance of ten miles and some.
Where they arrived was at the edge of a steep cliff.
Immediately after taking a glance of the world laid out beneath him, Anon’s eyes widened as he drew a sharp breath!
A cold chill trickled down his spine.
"So many..." Seth whispered this as his voice trailed at the end.
There were about five glaring locations in the vast forest below. Teeming throughout the jungle of towering trees with blood-colored leaves were an innumerable quantity of beasts, each strikingly similar to the other.
Most notably, and very familiar to the duo was the single wing with dark red feathers attached to their backs. From a single glance, it was not inaccurate to gauge that there were at least ten thousand of them!
And this number could very well be much higher!
Though they appeared to be split into five groups, each group being clustered together in and around a small mountain, there were still hundreds if not thousands of one-winged monkeys plaguing the forest between these five ’bases.’
Anon turned to Seth, asking in a sarcastic manner, "Is this the beast general that we’re supposed to slay?"
"Hey now, weren’t you seeking out treasures?" Seth glanced at Anon, and then pointed towards the bottom of the cliff, "I’m certain that each of these bases have a great fortune within. I’m sure this is what you wanted."
Clicking his tongue with disgust, Anon contorted, "Fortune is great and all, but this is certain death." He said this before chuckling to himself and muttering, "Even the oh so strong and mysterious devil makes a mistake from time to time."
"Hmmm..." Seth heard this and titled his head.
An odd expression etched itself onto his face before he cracked a smile.
Raising his arm, the bracelet on his wrist released a light buzz before shining with a dim blue light. A semi-transparent box oozing a hazy blue appeared, with slightly less than half of the space inside of the box being filled with treasures.
Seth grinned from ear to ear and asked with a hint of amusement audible in his voice, "Mistake? How have I made a mistake when we’ve had the solution from the beginning?"
