Chapter 39 - The price of arrogance  (1)

Born into a wealthy family, Maki is an only child who has always been pampered and has had all her desires fulfilled. She grew up to be a spoiled, selfish girl who seemed a bit wicked, willing to do anything to get what she wanted, one of which was taking Kairo away from Aira.

Although they had been in a long-term relationship, she had also been good friends with Aira since high school.

So, the label of 'backstabber' or 'friend of convenience' wasn't wrong because it was the reality, but what did it matter to a woman who loves shopping? The important thing for her was that she had become the daughter-in-law of the Kenzaki family and could live in luxury.

However, one thing she forgot is that life is like a wheel: Sometimes, you're on top, and sometimes, you're at the bottom. No one can predict it because everything turns, just like the Earth spins on its axis, sometimes bringing the warmth of sunlight or showing the beauty of the night sky adorned with the moon and stars.

No one can predict God's will.

Just like what the entire Kenzaki family was experiencing now. A handsome man with pale white skin, not due to a disease like anemia, but simply because it had been this way since birth, inherited from his late father. Like a ghost, this man appeared suddenly and without any invitation, especially since the clock in the living room showed it was 11 PM, a time when people usually rest. However, this man didn't come for a visit or to borrow money but to carry out his duty, lest he be labeled as incompetent and cause major trouble for himself.

This young man, whose full name was Tetsuya Ishikawa, didn't come alone. He brought a lawyer and authorities who carried an asset seizure order from the Kenzaki family's wealth, making the actions they took legal and not considered looting by force.

"Put everything in this house into the box truck for auction later."

"Understood, Young Master."

Panic was clearly visible on the face of the middle-aged woman with long red hair, who was the lady of the house.

"What are you doing in our house?" she said, panicked, seeing people carrying expensive furniture from the house to the truck parked outside.

The face of the middle-aged man with blonde hair and blue eyes, like the sky, showed a mixture of shock and fear as he looked at the young man in front of him. Although by age, he was much older, when comparing their positions and status, the young man was far above him. In a hurry, Mr. Haru Kenzaki approached Tetsuya, who was busy instructing his subordinates.

"W-What is going on, Young Master Tetsuya?" he asked, panicked. A letter with a police seal was handed to Haru to read so he could understand the purpose of Tetsuya's arrival.

"Seizure order?!" he exclaimed in disbelief. The bright smile that usually adorned his face was gone, replaced with a flat, expressionless face. "Quickly, pack all your clothes and leave this house now," he ordered coldly without any pleasantries.

"This is our house. Why are you kicking us out?" shouted the woman with long red hair, protesting and trying to defend herself.

The flat expression still adorned his handsome face, but his gaze was cold and piercing. "The Kenzaki company is in debt to Ishikawa, and according to the agreement, if the debt is not paid within the specified time frame, we will seize all the company's assets and the Kenzaki family's wealth."

The middle-aged man, the head of the Kenzaki family, immediately turned pale as if no blood was flowing to his face. "Didn't you give us time to pay the company's debt?" he said, deliberately bringing up Tetsuya's words from a while ago.

"Indeed. But Renji's mindset changed," he replied casually.

"How could that be? Didn't you promise me to give more time?" the man said, his tone slightly pressing, trying to remind Tetsuya of the promise.

His dark eyes stared deeply at the middle-aged man with blonde hair. "Indeed, but I was the one who made the promise, not Renji, the owner of the company. So, in this matter, I am not breaking any promise because I am just following orders from the company's higher-ups."

The middle-aged man's face hung low, unable to say anything, as if every word he uttered was easily countered by Tetsuya, leaving him powerless.

Meanwhile, seeing her husband powerless, it was now the turn of the middle-aged woman with long red hair, who was the lady of the Kenzaki family, to speak to Tetsuya. "Isn't Young Master Renji planning to get engaged to Yuna Kenzaki, my niece?" she said, her face lighting up as she brought up the arranged engagement between Renji and Yuna, which was actually decided unilaterally without asking Renji beforehand.

Tetsuya smiled briefly and then gave a meaningful look at Mrs. Kenzaki. "Unfortunately, Renji is not interested in becoming a son-in-law of the Kenzaki family."

The happy expression faded and was replaced with a shocked and angry one. "The engagement agreement has already been made and agreed upon by Master Kaito Ishikawa, so it cannot be canceled."

"Renji is married and will soon become a father," Tetsuya clarified, explaining the reason Renji rejected the engagement.

"Impossible. You must be trying to deceive me," she said in a high-pitched tone, not believing Tetsuya's words.

"That marriage is not valid because Young Master Ishikawa is still in school, and surely Master Kaito would not approve of it," retorted a young woman with a swollen belly dressed in a plain peach-colored silk pajama with long sleeves.

Her long hair was now cut to shoulder length, making her appear fresher, but her arrogance still showed, as if it were deeply ingrained.

Maki, who had been hiding in the room with her husband, chose to come out to see what was happening outside. She found that the living room was quite chaotic, with many people, including Young Master Tetsuya, standing and talking with her in-laws.

Then, without realizing it, she overheard their conversation. Without thinking, she immediately made a derogatory remark aimed at Aira, not knowing the real reason why Tetsuya had come tonight with dozens of people to seize all the Kenzaki family's assets. This was because of her actions, which led to this wealthy family falling into despair.

Because of her sharp tongue, the Kenzaki family's downfall and chaos began. Though soft and without bones, the tongue is sharper and more painful than a sword because it can wound someone deeply, leaving scars that might never fade or may last a lifetime.

The corners of Tetsuya's lips curled upward, forming a smile as he stared intensely and sharply at the young woman. "Miss Maki Kenzaki," he said in a slightly mocking tone.

Tetsuya's attention was now fully focused on Maki, who was standing not far from him.

"If that's the case, then what about the child inside her womb?" asked Tetsuya Ishikawa with a cynical tone, staring sharply at the young woman.

"Answer quickly! Why are you silent?" Tetsuya shouted in anger.

If only the woman named Maki weren't heavily pregnant, Tetsuya would have surely pulled her hair into a mess and dragged her out, not caring that Maki was a woman—because, to him, an enemy is still an enemy, regardless of gender.

Maki's entire body trembled, not from the cold air conditioning in the room but from the overwhelming fear that gripped her heart.

"Can you be more polite? She's pregnant," shouted the middle-aged man with blonde hair, angry because his wife was being yelled at, especially since she was heavily pregnant.

Tetsuya smiled briefly and then looked at Maki mockingly. "Look and listen carefully, Miss Kenzaki Maki. Even your husband is angry to hear you being shouted at like this. What do you think will happen when Renji finds out that you insulted his wife and child?" Tetsuya pointed directly at Maki's face, who was now looking down, trying to hide her tears.

"Is this true, Maki?" Kairo looked at his wife in disbelief.

"The pride of this family's daughter-in-law has dared to call Renji's child a bastard and label Aira as a seductress." Tetsuya's face looked terrifying as he said this, showing just how angry he was with Maki's attitude.

"Aira? Do you mean Aira Hoshino?" Kairo's mother asked, curious.

"Yes, the girl who used to date your son, but just because of her status, you all rejected her and married your son to that snake of a woman."

"Why would someone like Young Master Renji marry a poor girl like Aira?" said Mrs. Kenzaki in a tone full of contempt, with an attitude not much different from her daughter-in-law.

Suddenly, a knife was drawn and pointed at the middle-aged woman's face. "Watch your mouth, Mrs. Kenzaki, or I'll let my dagger tear your mouth apart," he threatened seriously, still holding the dagger.

"How dare you, a mere servant, threaten me!" she shrieked, trying to remain unafraid though her body trembled in fear.

"Whoever you are, I don't care, but if anyone dares to insult or harm Miss Aira, I won't hesitate to eliminate them, including you," he replied without hesitation.

Tetsuya pushed down Fujita's dagger. "Put your dagger away, Fujita. Don't stain your hands with her blood."

"She dared to insult the young lady," Fujita insisted, still pointing his dagger.

"I know, but control your emotions," Tetsuya urged, trying to calm Fujita, even though the orange-haired man was not typically someone who easily lost his temper.

However, Fujita's actions showed just how much he respected and valued Aira, as he did with Renji, and this was enough to move Tetsuya. Finally, Fujita obeyed Tetsuya's words, although his eyes still stared sharply at Mrs. Kenzaki.

Tetsuya sighed softly. "I originally wanted to be kind to you by giving you time to pack, but seeing the attitude of Mrs. and the daughter-in-law of the Kenzaki family makes my blood boil, and my hands are itching to slice someone's neck until their head falls and rolls on the floor." His gaze was cold and piercing.

"You think I will be afraid of your threats!"

Tetsuya's long legs stepped forward, approaching the middle-aged woman, whose age was the same as his late mother's. But if his mother were still alive, he was sure she would have been kind and gentle and would never have insulted anyone.

Thinking of his mother, his heart was instantly filled with longing for her. Tomorrow morning, he would visit her grave, bring a large bouquet of red roses, and pray.

"Don't think that I'm a good person, Mrs. My attitude may be friendly, but my heart is colder than Renji's. Besides, killing people is my job." He added, grinning cruelly. Tetsuya furrowed his brow in confusion, glancing to the side.

"I apologize if my wife and daughter-in-law have offended Young Master Renji and you." Mr. Kenzaki knelt before Tetsuya, asking for forgiveness and mercy as if he were a slave to his master.

Tetsuya maintained his cold demeanor. "No matter what you say or do, I will still kick all of you out."

"I beg you, Young Master, don't do this. I know you are a good person," he pleaded, throwing away his dignity as the owner of a large company and the head of the Kenzaki family. But all of that seemed insignificant and meaningless in front of the young man with eyes as dark as the night.

"Drag them all out and seal this house. I don't care if they freeze to death outside." Tetsuya ordered his subordinates, who had been standing behind, waiting for orders.

"Understood, Young Master."
