Chapter 30 - Conflict

"We have pledged to be together for life before God, and that is more sacred and important than a marriage on a piece of paper."

Maki smirked cynically. "You may think so, but if your marriage wasn't registered with the civil authorities, then the child in your womb is a bastard because the state does not legally recognize it as Renji Ishikawa's child."

Tears began to roll down Aira's cheeks, her lips trembling as she tried to speak. "You can say whatever you want, but never insult my child by calling him a bastard because every child born into this world is pure and clean, not dirty."

"No matter how hard you try to cover up and defend it, that child is..."

SLAP!

Maki's cheek was slapped hard by Aira, leaving the pink-haired woman stunned into silence.

"Shut your mouth, Maki-san! Don't you dare insult my child!" Aira shouted, tears streaming down her face as she glared furiously at the woman in front of her, who had been cornering her and even insulting her unborn child out of jealousy and resentment.

It should be Aira who feels angry and hateful, not Maki. After all, Maki took away everything Aira once had. So what is Maki's problem with her now?

Why does she keep wanting to hurt her?

Hasn't Maki already secured her status as Mrs. Kenzaki? Now she's even pregnant with Kairo's child—the man Aira once loved with all her heart but who betrayed and left her for Maki.

Aira has tried to forgive all of Maki's past actions, but why does Maki keep finding ways to hurt her? After all, Aira is just a human being with feelings and emotions like anyone else.

Yuna, who couldn't stand Maki's rude and disrespectful treatment, tried to retaliate but was stopped by Saki. Instead, Saki pushed Yuna, causing her to fall backwards. The people around them turned to watch the scene of Yuna lying on the mall floor in what Saki found to be a funny position.

"Don't you dare touch Aira, or I'll break your arm," Saki threatened seriously, her tone reminiscent of a delinquent.

Saki furrowed her brow and shot a deadly glare at Maki, whose body trembled in fear, though she tried her best to hide it, not wanting to appear weak and helpless.

"I don't know what your problem is, you big-forehead woman! But can you stop bothering Aira? Isn't your life already happy now that you've married Kairo Kenzaki, the boyfriend you stole from your friend?" Saki walked closer to Maki with a cold expression, still glaring daggers at her.

"Doesn't that satisfy you, the honourable Mrs Maki Kenzaki?" she hissed coldly.

Maki remained silent, her mouth tightly shut, unable to utter a single word in response to Saki, who seemed as terrifying as a god of death.

"Live peacefully with your beloved husband. Don't disturb others' lives just because you're jealous and feel inferior to Aira, who has married someone richer and more handsome than your husband," Saki taunted sharply.

Aira quickly wiped her tear-streaked face. "I beg you, Maki-san, don't bother me anymore. We've all found our happiness, and soon, we'll both become mothers. Live peacefully with Kairo-san."

"It's easy for you to say that, Aira, without knowing what I'm really going through," Maki murmured, her eyes gazing sadly ahead.

"That's your problem. You made your own choices, so don't blame others for your decisions," Saki retorted sharply.

Maki smiled bitterly. "You're right."

"Maki-san?!" Issei exclaimed in confusion, staring at Maki, who stood still, her body trembling and her eyes red as she held back tears.

"What's really going on here?" Issei asked Saki, curious.

Everyone remained silent, not answering or responding, which only made Issei even more confused and left him wondering.

"Big sister Maki, let's get out of here," Yuna said to Maki.

"Alright," Maki replied, complying.

The two of them left without a word, leaving Issei full of questions. He didn't understand the complicated situation that had unfolded among them. He had only gone to wait in line to buy waffles, and yet this had happened.

Aira's hunger had vanished, and Saki had also lost her appetite, even though Issei had bought waffles for them. In the end, Issei ended up eating everything himself until he felt complete.

Finally, the three of them decided to go home, and it seemed that the plan to cook Sukiyaki tonight was in jeopardy since neither Aira nor Saki felt like eating, let alone cooking.

When they arrived, several boxes labelled with the supermarket logo they had visited earlier were placed right next to Aira's apartment door. The apartment lobby staff had received the items and had them delivered here.

"What really happened back there, Honey?" Issei asked his lover once they were inside Aira's apartment.

"It's all because of that big-forehead woman!" Saki answered irritably, making Issei even more confused since he didn't know who this "big-forehead woman" was.

"Who's the big-forehead woman?" Issei asked again, filled with curiosity.

"Let's not talk about it anymore; it just makes me annoyed," Saki replied, clearly frustrated.

Issei could only sigh in resignation as he carried the box containing the groceries they had bought earlier and began unpacking them one by one onto the table.

The two women, with their different hair colours, sat listlessly at the dining table, utterly devoid of energy. The pregnant woman, in particular, had been lost in thought ever since they left the mall, which only made Issei even more curious. But when he asked, Saki's answers only confused him further.

"The ingredients we bought for the Sukiyaki are way too much for just three people," Issei remarked, looking at the large amount of food on the table, all of which had been unpacked from the boxes.

"You two can eat. I'm going back to my room to rest," Aira said listlessly, her appetite gone.

"You can't skip dinner, Aira. Remember, you're pregnant. Do you want to starve your child?" Issei scolded, feeling anxious.

Aira, reflecting on Issei's words, concluded that he was right. She admitted internally that her baby would eat if she did, and she had forgotten that she was even pregnant. "Well, okay, I'll eat."

"What about bringing the others over to join so you can feel better and have a light atmosphere?" Saki proposed.

"Totally, I was thinking we could do what she's saying too," Issei approved the idea.

"Alright," Aira said, agreeing to their suggestion.

"Then I'll message the group and get everyone to come."

Thanks to the blonde couple, Aira's mood improved. She wasn't as sad anymore, no longer dwelling on Maki's hurtful words about her child's status just because she and Issei weren't officially married.

"This time, let us do the cooking. You sit and watch; don't do anything, okay?" Saki instructed.

"Okay," Aira replied obediently, flashing a smile at Saki.

A few minutes later, Issei arrived carrying two waffles with different fillings, confused by the strange and awkward atmosphere among the four women. He had no idea what was going on. Issei was especially puzzled by Maki and even more so by Aira, who was sobbing behind Saki, who was in full Medusa mode—truly terrifying and making him feel scared for no reason.

Watching them cook was both enjoyable and envious. She missed the raven-haired young man, even though they had only been apart for a day. It felt so long, and Aira wished the day would pass quickly.

Sunset and night arrived, with stars and the moon appearing in the sky. Special for today, Asahi Café closed earlier because they wanted to attend a party at Aira's house.

Issei checked his phone to see the incoming messages. After reading and replying, he quickly left. "Wait here, and I'll go to the lobby for a bit to wait for them because I'm afraid the security might not let them in."

"Why? Didn't Aira already allow them to come?" Saki murmured, confused.

"Don't you know how Arashi, Fujin, and Shintaro look? I'm not as worried about Sasori and the others," he said, reminding Saki about their appearances.

Saki and Aira both laughed together, understanding Issei's point.

"You're absolutely right, Issei-san," Aira said with a small smile, imagining their outfits, which were always extravagant and different from the others.

"Before they even enter, the three of them will probably be kicked out because they'll be mistaken for troublemakers," Saki added with a chuckle, imagining the three being kicked out by the apartment building security.

"Take this spare key to get in," Aira handed Issei the spare apartment key since the door was always locked.

"Alright, I'll leave now," he said as he left the apartment, taking the key Aira had given him.

Issei felt safe leaving the two women alone in the apartment without supervision, not realizing that danger was heading toward them. He unknowingly passed by a man with long brown hair, accompanied by tall and large people dressed in all black, entering the elevator he had just used to go upstairs.

"His eyes are similar to Aira's," Issei murmured, curious.
