Chapter 84: Road Race

Redcape’s summon, Nightrider, was closing in fast.

Joe’s eyes flicked to the side-view mirror and caught sight of the approaching rider on a dark massive mount.

"Shit," Joe muttered.

He slammed his foot down on the accelerator, and the car’s engine roared in response, surging forward with a quick boost to speed.

But Nightrider wasn’t falling behind.

"Come on, boy!" the summon shouted, leaning forward in the saddle.

The dark horse responded as well, and suddenly it began moving faster than any normal creature ever could.

With that, that gap between them closed in seconds. So much so that in the next few moments, Joe’s car and Nightrider were racing side by side.

Cars coming in the opposite direction swerved wildly to avoid them. Tires screeched really badly and honks went off back and forth. Some drivers slammed on their brakes so hard their vehicles skidded to a stop just inches away from collision.

Joe and Nightrider were driving on the wrong side of the lane, racing backward through traffic that should have been moving forward.

"Stop!" Nightrider yelled.

But Joe didn’t even glance at him. Instead, he stretched his right hand out towards the passenger’s side window while keeping his left hand on the wheel. Right then, his wrist-mounted gauntlet crossbow activated and fired.

The bolt shot through the air, passed clean through the shattered passenger-side window, and aimed directly at the horse’s legs. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

Nightrider’s eyes widened for a split second before he swung his sword in a blur of motion, intercepting the bolt mid-flight and deflecting it.

Immediately after that, his dark horse suddenly reared back, then launched itself forward in one massive leap that covered an impossible distance in a single bound.

It landed directly in Joe’s path with a heavy crash that cracked that part of the road beneath its hooves.

Joe’s eyes went wide, as that forced him to yank the wheel hard to the left, while slamming his foot on the brake at the same time.

The car’s tires screeched on it spun into a violent drift that sent it skidding sideways across the road in a wide arc.

The vehicle came to a stop mere inches away from Nightrider’s horse, close enough that Joe could see steam rising from its nostrils.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Nightrider’s horse began trotting toward the car.

Right that moment, Joe shoved the door open and, in the same motion, thrust his hand outward, firing a grappling line from Katarina in compact mode.

The grappling hook shot upward like a bolt of lightning, latching onto a tall metal pole several meters away. The line went taut instantly and yanked Joe forward so fast he became little more than a blur of motion as he soared through the air.

He landed smoothly atop the pole in a low crouch, the small duffel bag strapped across his body. Despite how narrow it was, he remained perfectly balanced.

Without hesitation, he turned his body and raised his gauntlet crossbow again, this time aiming and firing directly at Nightrider from above.

The summon, seated atop his mount, swung his sword once more at the incoming bolt with precise timing.

The collision created an immediate smokescreen that erupted outward in thick black clouds, obscuring everything within a ten-meter radius around him and his horse alike.

The bolt Joe had fired wasn’t just an ordinary projectile, it carried with it a smoke bomb mechanism specifically designed to trigger on impact and create exactly this effect.

By the time the smokescreen cleared several seconds later, joe was gone.

Nightrider gritted his teeth as he looked up toward where joe had been standing a moment ago, only to see him now latched onto the top of another building several blocks away, after his grappling hook had pulled him up onto its rooftop.

Joe glanced toward Nightrider for a brief second, with this mocking expression crossing his face, before firing another grappling line and disappearing over the edge of the building.

Redcape’s motorcycle stormed into view at that moment, coming to a stop beside Nightrider’s horse. The engine continued to rumble beneath him as he remained on the bike, looking up toward where Joe had just vanished from sight.

"It’s Hitman X," Nightrider said immediately without turning his sights away from that building’s edge. "I’m chasing him."

"Be careful," Redcape warned. "He’s classified as S-tier talent Ranger, so use your ultimate skill when you get the chance."

Nightrider nodded in acknowledgment before urging his horse forward again. The dark horse galloped forward at full speed toward the building Joe had initially landed.

And when they reached close enough proximity with that building itself, the horse suddenly leaped upward and landed directly onto the vertical surface of the wall.

Then, it started galloping along the building’s wall as though gravity meant absolutely nothing to it.

It reached the top of the roof within seconds and continued galloping across it in relentless pursuit of Joe, who was already several buildings ahead but still visible from this distance.

Meanwhile, Redcape revved his motorcycle’s engine and rode down the street below at full speed, keeping close enough to provide backup whenever it was needed during the chase.

While this chase happened, it soon became public information.

Radio broadcasts and television screens across the city switched from their regular programming to breaking news coverage.

An anchor’s voice rang out urgently: "We have breaking news. Hitman X has been spotted in the eastern district near the border checkpoints. The hero Redcape is currently in pursuit. All citizens are advised to remain indoors and avoid the area until further notice."

A few moments later, Nightrider was closing in fast.

His dark horse leaped from one building to the next with powerful, gravity-defying bounds as each landing cracked the rooftop tiles before propelling forward again.

Joe, now running on foot across the surface of another rooftop, sensed the approaching presence behind him.

"Tch." He clicked his tongue in frustration.

But right then, Katarina spoke in that eerie female voice:

[Spirit Destabilizing Bullet complete.]

Joe stopped abruptly. He turned around for a brief moment and raised Katarina toward the incoming mount, which had just leapt from another building and was still midair, heading straight for the rooftop where he stood.

He pulled the trigger.

The bullet traveled almost instantly and struck the dark horse in its chest while it was still airborne. Nightrider’s eyes widened in shock as he felt the mount beneath him shudder violently.

The horse let out a distorted cry as its body began flickering. Then it descended into a stumbling fall as both rider and mount crashed hard onto the rooftop with a heavy impact.

Joe turned forward again without waiting to see the result and kept moving.
