Chapter 112: The Manor’s Basement(II)(Bonus)

Percival’s fingers moved across the screen quickly, entering a specific sequence of numbers into the passcode field.

The phone beeped once, then twice, then suddenly unlocked itself.

A pop-up message appeared on-screen: [Access Granted to System Developer]

Percival grinned.

Even Ethan looked genuinely surprised for a moment as he stared at the unlocked device in Percival’s hand.

"Do you also have the code for the model that’s new?" Ethan asked.

Percival shook his head and said. "Nope."

Ethan quickly turned to his butler. "Eduardo, get us new models of the Arcphone tomorrow."

Eduardo nodded. "I was thinking the same, Master Ethan."

Percival rolled his eyes and chuckled, "What a drama queen."

Ethan barely acknowledged him as he took the unlocked phone from Percival’s hand and began scrolling through its contents.

The first thing he checked was the call log, but every single contact listed there was marked as Unknown. None of them were saved with names or identifiers of any kind.

Ethan frowned as he scrolled through them one by one, searching for anything that might give him a clue about who had sent these men after him tonight.

He then went on to their photo folders, and that was when he saw quite a lot of content, though nothing really stood out at first glance. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

At this point, both he, Eduardo, Percival, and Isabella were gathered around him, staring at the screen as he scrolled through the images.

The Arcphone belonging to the driver contained diverse photos. Lots of cats, which seemed oddly out of place.

A few guns laid out on tables.

Several explicit pictures of a woman he had just finished doing it with, laying out on a bed with messy hair and flushed skin.

Percival’s eyes widened suddenly as he leaned in closer. "Is that a goblin-person?"

He was referring to one of the explicit images showing a woman with green skin lying half-naked beneath the sheets .

No one answered Percival as Ethan kept scrolling, his expression growing more frustrated with each passing second.

Then suddenly, Eduardo spoke up. "Hold on."

He gestured with his fingers in a way that suggested Ethan scroll back.

Ethan did so immediately, reversing through the images until Eduardo said, "Stop there."

The picture on screen showed a building exterior at night

Neon lights illuminated the front entrance and a large sign hung above the door in bold letters: THE LUCKY HAND CASINO.

Eduardo leaned in closer, his eyes narrowing as he studied the image.

"Yes, that," he said. His expression became serious. "I know that place, Master Ethan. This casino..."

He gestured toward Ethan. "May I?"

Ethan nodded and handed him the phone.

Eduardo took it and exited out of the single photo view. He returned to the full grid collection of photos and began scrolling through them with much more focus.

His eyes narrowed further as he spotted several more images featuring the same casino sign in various angles and lighting conditions.

There were also pictures taken from within the casino itself: game tables filled with players, roulette wheels spinning, poker chips stacked up.

"Hmmm..." Eduardo muttered, with a worried look on his face.

Ethan asked immediately, "What is it?"

Eduardo glanced up at him with a grave expression. "Master Ethan, if I remember correctly, that casino isn’t just a regular casino..."

Percival, who had picked up the other phone to look through its contents as well, suddenly chimed in. "I see a few of the same casino pictures on this phone too."

He held up the second device so Eduardo and the others could see. There were random pictures of casino tables, players laughing over drinks, dealers shuffling cards under bright overhead lights.

With that confirmation, Eduardo said with conviction, "Master Ethan, I think I know who these attackers are."

Ethan waited for him to continue.

"They work for the League of Assassins, Master Ethan," Eduardo said.

Ethan’s face shifted into a puzzled expression."Huh?"

Eduardo took a breath before continuing.

"The League is a very old association of assassins," he began. "They’ve existed for centuries and operate under a strict code of conduct and rules that govern their actions."

He paused for effect.

"In many circles, they’re considered untouchable. Even powerful guilds think twice before going after someone affiliated with the League."

Ethan stared at him, almost amazed by what he was hearing.

"How is the government letting a group of assassins exist in this country?" He asked. "How does that even make sense?"

Eduardo’s expression remained grim as he answered.

"The League is extremely well-connected," he said. "This casino you see in these photos? It’s only one front for their operations. And it’s only one small part of the true size of the organization."

He paused to let that sink in before adding:

"There’s one branch of them in every country on this continent. In some states, the League practically runs things. For example, the Prime Minister of Vanburgh leads the branch in his country."

"What the fuck?" Percival exclaimed.

Both Isabella and Ethan looked equally shocked by that revelation.

Vanburgh was a country, almost as large and developed as Gritnia.

Eduardo nodded. "But in some countries, the League isn’t permitted to exist because they’re wanted criminals there and hunted down whenever possible."

"But for Gritnia," Eduardo continued, "they’ve existed this long without much disturbance because they have certain families and members of Parliament backing them. Most of their crimes go unnoticed or unreported because of this protection."

Isabella’s face was totally in disbelief and anger as she processed what she just heard.

"I find this unbelievable that my father permits this sort of group to exist in this country."

Eduardo hesitated for just a moment before asking politely, "May I speak freely, Princess?"

Isabella nodded.

Eduardo then said, "Your father concerns himself primarily with things that pose a direct threat to his rulership and title as King. If the League in this country were a threat to him personally or politically, only then would he rise to action against them. Otherwise, Parliament runs the country as they see fit on most matters."

Isabella’s expression turned into one of sadness and concern because in truth, that description sounded exactly like her father, King Carson Tudor.

She said nothing more but looked away from all of them for a moment.

Ethan broke the silence by asking Eduardo,

"How did you come to know this much about them?"

Eduardo smiled a bit at the question and answered vaguely, "I may have run into a few of them back in the day."

Ethan then said, "I assume you fought and killed some?"

Eduardo nodded. "Yes. And I kept taking them out one by one until they learned to stop bothering."

Ethan crossed his arms and asked another question, "What could possibly be the reason for them randomly attacking us that way? Or do they just do that? Just pick a target?"

"No, Master Ethan." Eduardo shook his head. "You know I mentioned they operate under a strict set of rules?"

Ethan nodded.

"If the League comes for you," Eduardo explained, "you either stole from them or had a member killed, directly or indirectly."

There was this silence as realization dawned on Ethan’s face. Then he whispered, "...Hitman X."

Eduardo nodded and said, "It has to be. He was an assassin after all."

Percival turned toward Ethan in shock at that revelation. "Wait, you killed someone, man?"
