My SSS-Rank Grim Reaper System-Chapter 72: Week at Sea
[DAY 1 AT SEA – SUNSET]
The sun descended slowly toward the horizon—painting the sky in oranges and pinks.
Alex was on deck, practicing sword movements.
[Battle Flow] passively active—his body moving with enhanced fluidity.
Cut. Block. Thrust. Spin.
Constant repetition.
"Your movements are improving," Raven observed from the helm.
Alex stopped, wiping sweat. "Yeah?"
"Less stiff. More natural." She paused. "Though you still telegraph your attacks."
"Telegraph?"
"Your shoulders tense up before you strike. It warns the opponent."
Alex checked—attempted a cut.
Raven was right. His shoulder tensed slightly before the movement.
"Shit. You’re right."
"Come here." Raven left the helm (tied to stay straight). "I’ll show you."
She approached Alex.
Put her hands on his shoulders.
"Relax. Completely."
Alex obeyed—or tried to.
Hard to relax with Raven that close.
He could smell her subtle perfume. See every detail of her face.
"Still tense," Raven murmured, squeezing his shoulders gently.
"Sorry, I—"
"Breathe. Deep."
Alex breathed.
Raven massaged the tension from his shoulders—professional but... intimate.
"Better. Now attack. Don’t think. Just move."
Alex attacked.
A smoother movement.
Less telegraphing.
"There!" Raven smiled. "Feel the difference?"
"Yeah."
"Good. Practice that." Her hands still on his shoulders. "Fifty repetitions. Then rest."
"Understood."
But Raven didn’t move away immediately.
She just... stayed there.
Hands on Alex’s shoulders. Close.
The moment stretched.
Alex turned his head slightly—
Faces inches apart.
"Raven, I—"
"DINNER’S READY!" Emily shouted from below.
Raven stepped back immediately—but a small smile played on her lips.
"We’ll continue later."
She went down the ladder.
Alex remained on deck.
Heart racing.
That was the third moment this week. What’s happening?
---
[DINNER – SMALL CABIN]
The boat had a tiny cabin below—barely enough space for a small table and four chairs.
Emily had made fish soup—fish they had caught that morning.
"Delicious," Alex said sincerely.
"Thanks." Emily smiled. "I learned to cook at the Temple. Part of healer training."
"Why do healers need to know how to cook?" asked Raven.
"Nutrition is part of healing. Proper food speeds recovery."
"Makes sense."
They ate in comfortable silence for minutes.
Then Emily spoke—casually.
"Alex, can you help me with something after dinner?"
"Sure. What do you need?"
"Reorganize the medical supplies. The boxes are heavy."
"No problem."
Raven raised an eyebrow—but said nothing.
She just smiled into her soup.
Emily noticed. "Something funny?"
"No. Nothing." But the smile remained.
Subtle tension.
Not hostile.
But definitely... competitive.
Alex, clueless, continued eating.
"Master. Dense," Grim murmured from the corner.
"What?"
"Nothing. Master."
---
[AFTER DINNER]
Alex was helping Emily reorganize boxes of potions.
A very small space.
They had to work very close—shoulders brushing, passing boxes in the cramped quarters.
"Sorry," Emily murmured when her hand touched Alex’s accidentally.
"It’s okay."
Another box. Another brush.
"Sorry again."
"Emily, it’s fine. Small space."
The third time—this time Emily stumbled slightly.
Alex caught her by the waist.
Stabilizing her.
"You okay?"
Emily nodded—but didn’t pull away immediately.
"Yeah. Just... lost my balance."
She was looking directly at him.
Close.
"Alex, I—"
THUMP.
The hold door opened.
Raven—with a casual expression but eyes taking in everything.
"Need any help?"
"No," Alex and Emily said simultaneously.
Pulling apart quickly.
Raven smiled—knowing. "Good. Just checking."
She closed the door.
Alex and Emily exchanged looks.
"She knows," Emily murmured.
"She definitely knows," Alex agreed.
"Does she know what exactly?"
"Good question."
---
[DAY 3 ]
Raven and Alex were practicing hand-to-hand combat.
Emily was watching from the side—supposedly reading a medical book.
But she was watching them more than the book.
"Again," Raven ordered. "Defend."
She attacked—fast, precise.
Alex blocked—but Raven spun, took him down.
Alex fell.
Raven ended up on top—pinning him.
"Dead," she declared.
"I get it."
"Yeah?" Raven didn’t move. "Because this is the third time you’ve made the same mistake."
"What mistake?"
"You drop your guard when you block with your left arm. Leaves your right side exposed."
She demonstrated—touching Alex’s side with her free hand.
A light touch but... prolonged.
"Here. Vulnerable."
"I’ll remember."
"Good."
She was still on top of him.
Alex was very aware of Raven’s weight. The warmth of her body. The proximity.
"Raven..."
"Yeah?"
"Are you going to... get up?"
"Should I?"
"People might misunderstand this."
Raven looked around—only Emily nearby, who was watching them with an unreadable expression.
"Let them misunderstand," Raven smiled. But she got up, offering her hand.
Alex took it.
Raven pulled—harder than necessary.
Alex stood quickly—ended up very close to Raven.
Almost touching.
"Better luck next time," Raven murmured.
Then she walked toward the helm.
Leaving Alex... processing.
Emily closed her book with an audible snap.
"I’m going to organize more potions," she announced.
She went down the ladder.
"Sexual. Tension. Unbearable," Grim commented.
"Grim, please."
"What? Is. Truth."
Alex couldn’t argue.
---
[DAY 4 – NIGHT]
He couldn’t sleep.
Too many thoughts.
He went up on deck.
Found Emily already there—sitting on the edge, looking at the stars.
"You can’t sleep either?" Alex asked, sitting beside her.
"No. Too much... thinking."
"About?"
Emily hesitated. "Things. The trip. The future. Us."
"Us?"
"The team. Where we’re going. What we’ll do after the Sanctuary."
"Ah."
Silence.
Then Emily spoke—her voice softer.
"Can I ask you something? Personally."
"Sure."
"When all of this is over... the Sanctuary, reducing your corruption, finding other Fragments... what do you want? For yourself."
Alex considered.
"Honestly... I don’t know. I never thought beyond surviving."
"But now that you are surviving..."
"Now... I guess I want to live. Really live. Experience things. See the world." He paused. "Maybe settle down somewhere. Eventually."
"With someone?"
A loaded question.
Alex looked at her.
Emily was looking directly at him—waiting for an honest answer.
"Maybe," he said carefully. "If I find the right person."
"And if you’ve already found her?"
Alex’s heart raced.
"Emily, I—"
The cabin door opened.
Raven emerged—with two cups of hot tea.
"Thought you might need these," she said casually.
But her timing was too perfect.
Emily accepted a cup. "Thanks."
"You’re welcome."
Raven sat on Alex’s other side.
Now he was between them.
The atmosphere... charged.
They all drank tea in silence.
Watching the stars.
Finally, Raven spoke.
"You know what’s interesting?"
"What?" asked Alex.
"That we’re in the middle of the ocean. Far from everything. No one else around." She paused. "And you two are still acting like there’s an audience."
Emily blushed. "I don’t know what you’re talking about."
"Of course you don’t." Raven smiled. "Alex, serious question."
"Yeah?"
"Between Emily and me... if you had to choose—"
"Raven!" Emily interrupted.
"What? It’s a valid question."
"No, it’s not!"
"Why not? Clearly we both feel something for him. He clearly feels something for both of us. Why not clear it up?"
Alex rubbed his face. "Can we... not do this now?"
"When then?" Raven pressed. "After the Sanctuary? After we find another Fragment? There’ll always be ’something else’ if we keep putting it off."
Emily sighed. "She has a point."
Both looked at Alex.
Expectant.
Alex felt genuine panic.
"I... need time. To process. This." He gestured between them. "It’s not fair to either of you if I rush a decision."
Silence.
Then Emily nodded. "That’s... reasonable."
"Very mature," Raven agreed. "Though boring."
Alex laughed despite the tension. "Sorry for being boring."
"It’s okay. We forgive you." Raven stood up. "But eventually you’ll have to decide. Or we’ll decide for you."
"Is that a threat?"
"It’s a promise."
She went down the ladder—leaving Alex and Emily alone again.
Emily also stood. "I should sleep. Tomorrow’s my turn to cook."
"Emily, wait—"
She looked at him.
"Thanks. For being patient. With all of this."
Emily smiled—small but genuine. "Thanks for being honest."
She went down too.
Alex was left alone on deck.
Staring at the stars.
"Master. In. Trouble," Grim observed from the bow.
"Yeah, Grim. I know."
"Good. Trouble. But. Trouble."
"Yeah."
"Luck. Master."
"Thanks. I’ll need it."
