Chapter 69: Last Week in Coral Port

Alex woke up feeling like a golem had used him as a punching bag.

Every muscle ached. Every joint protested.

[DEBUFF: EXHAUSTION – SEVERE]

[TIME REMAINING: 14 HOURS]

"Great," he muttered, trying to sit up.

He failed miserably.

Collapsed back onto Raven’s bed—again.

"Trying to move?" Raven asked from a chair by the window.

She looked just as bad—dark circles under her eyes, disheveled hair, moving with deliberate care.

"Trying," Alex admitted. "Not successfully."

"Same here. I tried to get up an hour ago. I fell."

"Literally?"

"Literally. Emily had to help me back to the chair."

Despite the pain, Alex laughed weakly.

"Fragment Synergy is amazing."

"Until it ends."

"Until it ends."

Emily came in with a tray—tea, toast, and recovery potions.

"Good morning, shattered warriors," she said with false cheerfulness. "How do you feel?"

"Like garbage," Alex and Raven replied simultaneously.

"Perfect. That means you’re alive." Emily set the tray on the table. "Two recovery potions each. Take them now. Then complete rest for twenty-four hours. Doctor’s orders."

"And if we don’t obey?" asked Alex.

"Then I’ll tell Grim to tie you to your beds."

"With. Pleasure," added Grim from the corner, in his 80cm form but clearly serious.

"I’ll take the potions," Alex said quickly.

[Greater Recovery Potion x2 consumed]

[DEBUFF: EXHAUSTION – SEVERE → MODERATE]

[All stats: -30% → -15%]

[Time remaining: 14 hours → 8 hours]

Immediate relief—not complete, but noticeable.

"Better," Alex admitted.

Raven also took her potions, sighing in relief.

"Much better."

"Good. Now rest. I’ll handle everything today." Emily left, closing the door softly.

Alex and Raven exchanged looks.

"When did she become so bossy?" asked Alex.

"When we almost killed ourselves using the forbidden power of ancient weapons," Raven replied dryly.

"Fair point."

Comfortable silence for minutes.

Then Raven spoke, her voice more serious.

"74%."

Alex knew what she was referring to without asking.

"Yeah."

"Scared?"

He considered lying but decided against it.

"Terrified."

"Why?"

"Because every time I use the Fragment... I hear it more clearly. Whispering. Tempting. And part of me..." He hesitated. "...part of me wants to listen."

Raven nodded slowly.

"Same here. My Fragment is... persuasive."

"What does it say?"

"That I’m an assassin. That killing is natural. That I should have killed the hunters." She paused. "That mercy is weakness."

"And you?"

"I think mercy is a strength that not everyone can wield. But..." She touched the mark on her hand. "...it’s getting harder to remember that."

Alex reached out his hand—an impulsive gesture.

Raven took it.

A simple connection. Human.

"We remind each other," said Alex. "When one forgets, the other remembers."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

A handshake. Sealing the agreement.

Then—an awkward moment.

Neither let go.

They just... stayed like that.

Hands intertwined.

A silence that wasn’t uncomfortable.

Finally, Raven spoke—her voice softer.

"The white streak really suits you."

Alex blinked. "What?"

"Your hair. The white streak. It makes you look..." She searched for a word. "...interesting. More mature."

"Mature? I’m nineteen."

"Mature for nineteen." A small smile. "Distinguished."

"You keep using that word."

"Because it’s true."

Alex realized they were still holding hands.

And that he didn’t mind.

And that Raven hadn’t let go either.

"Raven, I—"

A knock on the door.

They both let go immediately—like children caught doing something forbidden.

Emily came in with more tea.

She looked between them.

She smiled—small, knowing.

"Am I interrupting something?"

"No," Alex and Raven said simultaneously.

Too fast. Too defensive.

Emily laughed. "Of course not."

She set down the tea, left—but winked before closing the door.

Alex and Raven looked at each other.

"She knows," said Raven.

"She definitely knows," Alex agreed.

"Does she know what exactly?"

"...Good question."

Uncomfortable silence now.

Because they both knew that something was happening.

But neither wanted to name it.

Not yet.

---

[DAY 3]

Alex was recovered enough to walk without pain.

[DEBUFF: EXHAUSTION – REMOVED]

[Stats restored to normal]

He was sitting in the living room, organizing gear for the trip, when there was a knock on the door.

Mrs. Thorne entered—with a plate of cookies, as always.

But her expression was... sad.

"I heard you’re leaving," she said without preamble.

"How—?"

"Dear, in this apartment building, walls have ears. And the lady on the third floor has very good ears."

Alex smiled despite himself.

"Yeah. We’re leaving. In four days."

Mrs. Thorne nodded, setting the cookies on the table.

"Where to?"

"North. The Sanctuary of Dawn."

"Hmm. Three weeks’ travel. Dangerous territory." Not a question. A statement. "Why?"

"I need... purification. From something affecting me."

Mrs. Thorne studied him with experienced eyes.

Then she touched the white streak in Alex’s hair.

"A mark of dark magic. I’ve seen it before." Her voice was serious. "Be careful, young man. Dark power is seductive... Easy to fall into... Hard to leave."

"I know. That’s why I’m going."

She nodded approvingly.

"Good. Then this is goodbye."

"Temporarily. We’ll come back."

"Maybe. Maybe not." She smiled—sad but warm. "That’s the adventurer’s life. You never know which path you’ll take."

She hugged Alex—tight, like a real grandmother.

"Survive. Come back if you can. And if you can’t..." Her voice cracked slightly. "...be happy wherever you end up."

Alex hugged her back.

"Thank you. For everything. The cookies. The kindness. For... caring."

"Hard not to care about good neighbors." She pulled back, wiping her eyes. "Now, a farewell gift."

She took a small bag from her apron.

Inside—ten perfectly baked cookies.

"Mummified by that skeleton of yours. They’ll last for months. For the journey."

"Treasure. Protected," Grim declared solemnly, taking the bag like a sacred relic.

Mrs. Thorne laughed—genuine.

"Take care of yourselves. All of you."

Then she left.

Leaving the apartment feeling a little emptier.

[DAY 4]

Emily had been busy—organizing medical supplies, potions, bandages.

Alex found her in her room, surrounded by bags and lists.

"Need help?" he asked.

"Always." She pointed to a pile of potions. "Sort those by type. Healing, mana, antidote, resistance."

Alex obeyed, sitting on the floor beside her.

They worked in comfortable silence for minutes.

Then Emily spoke.

"Scared?"

"About the trip?"

"About everything. The trip. The monsters. Your corruption."

Alex considered.

"Yeah. Pretty scared."

"Me too."

He looked at her, surprised. "You? But you’re always so... calm."

"Because someone has to be." She smiled weakly. "If I panic, everyone panics. So I stay calm. But inside..." She paused. "...I’m terrified. Constantly."

"Of what?"

"Of losing you. You, Raven, Grim. You’re..." She searched for words. "...my family now. My only family. If I lose that..."

Her voice cracked.

Alex put a hand on her shoulder.

"You won’t lose us. We’re a team. Family. And family takes care of each other."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

Emily leaned into him—her head resting on Alex’s shoulder.

"Thank you. For letting me be part of this. Of you."

"Thank you. For choosing to stay. After leaving the Temple, you could have gone anywhere. But you chose to stay with us."

"It wasn’t a hard choice. You’re better family than the Temple ever was."

They stayed like that—a quiet, honest moment.

Then Emily lifted her head, looked at Alex.

Faces very close.

A charged moment.

"Alex, I—"

The door opened.

Raven entered. "Do you have the potions for—oh."

She saw their position—Alex and Emily very close, in a clearly intimate moment.

"Sorry. I interrupted. Continue." She started to retreat.

"No! You didn’t interrupt anything," Emily said quickly, pulling away.

But the blush on her cheeks said otherwise.

Raven looked between them.

An unreadable expression.

"...Right. When you’re done sorting potions, come to the living room. We need to discuss the route."

She left.

Leaving an awkward atmosphere behind.

Emily sighed. "That was... uncomfortable."

"Yeah."

"Do you think she...?"

"Misunderstood?"

"Yeah."

"Probably."

Silence.

Then Alex asked—his voice careful.

"Was it a misunderstanding?"

Emily looked at him directly.

"What do you think?"

"I think..." Alex searched for words. "...things are complicated. And getting more complicated."

"Yeah. Definitely."

They didn’t resolve anything.

---

[DAY 5]

Captain Sera invited them to the Guild office.

"Final report before you leave," she explained.

Once they were seated, she unfolded a map.

"The Sanctuary of Dawn. Here." She pointed to a spot in the Crystal Mountains. "Three weeks’ direct travel. Four if you run into trouble."

"Trouble like..." Raven prompted.

"Bandits. Monsters. Weather. The Crystal Mountains have ice storms even in summer."

"Wonderful," Alex muttered.

"But," Sera continued, "if you make it, it’s supposedly worth it. The old records say the Sanctuary can purify dark corruption. Reduce it by up to 10% with two weeks of immersion."

"Have you been there?" asked Emily.

"No. But I knew someone who did. Twenty years ago. He said it was..." She searched for a word. "...transcendental. Like bathing in pure light."

Alex touched the Fragment mark unconsciously.

"Will it hurt?"

"Probably. Purification usually does." Sera looked at him seriously. "But it’s pain that saves lives. Better than the alternative."

"What’s the alternative?"

"80% corruption. Loss of control. Transformation into something that’s no longer human."

Heavy silence.

"So there’s no real alternative," Alex said finally.

"No. There isn’t."

Sera leaned back.

"Officially, your Guild rank stays Silver. When you return, you can take on missions again. Unofficially..." She smiled. "...after what you did to five level 50+ hunters, you should be Gold rank. But that would attract more attention."

"We prefer Silver," Raven said quickly.

"I thought you’d say that."

Sera stood up.

"A farewell gift. From the Guild."

She handed over three items:

[Emergency Communication Crystal] – Activates once, sends a distress signal to the nearest Guild.

[Enchanted Map] – Shows real-time location, updates terrain.

[Sealed Letter of Recommendation] – Signed by Sera, valid at any Guild on the continent.

"They’re not much," Sera admitted. "But they could save lives."

"Thank you," Alex said sincerely.

"Don’t thank me yet. Thank me when you come back alive."

A pause.

"If you come back alive."

---

[DAY 6]

Last night in the apartment.

The team had dinner together—simple but comforting food.

Afterward, they sat in the living room, no one wanting to go to sleep yet.

"Nervous?" asked Emily.

"Terrified," Alex admitted.

"Anxious," said Raven.

"Excited," added Grim.

They all looked at him.

"What? Adventure. New. Monsters. Strong. Exciting."

"You have a point," Alex laughed. "I guess it is exciting. In a terrifying way."

Comfortable silence.

Then Raven spoke—her voice soft.

"Let’s be honest. We could die on this trip."

"Raven—" Emily began.

"No. We need to say it." Raven looked at both of them. "The monsters there are normally level 90-130. Dangerous terrain. Three weeks in the wilderness. Statistically, there’s a real chance one of us won’t come back."

Heavy silence.

"So," Raven continued, "if there’s anything we need to say... now’s the time."

She looked directly at Alex.

The message clear.

Alex swallowed.

"I... don’t know what to say."

"Say the truth."

"The truth is..." He searched for words. "...you’re the most important thing in my life. Raven, Emily, Grim. You’re the reason I fight. The reason I want to reduce the corruption. The reason I want to live."

He paused.

"And if something happens to me... I want you to know that every day with you has been worth it. Every battle. Every laugh. Every moment."

Emily had tears in her eyes.

Raven smiled—a small but genuine smile.

"Well said," said Raven. "My turn. Alex, you’re an impulsive idiot who uses forbidden power without thinking about consequences."

"Hey—"

"And you’re also the bravest person I know. The kindest. The most loyal." She paused. "And I’m glad I met you. Even if your Fragment is a pain in the ass."

"Hey," both Grim and the Fragment protested mentally.

Alex laughed despite the tension.

Emily spoke next.

"I left the Temple. I left the only life I knew. And it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Because I found a real family. I found purpose. And..." She looked at Alex. "...I found people worth risking everything for."

A charged moment.

Then Grim—always the tension breaker.

"Group. Sentimental. But. Appreciated. I. Also. Love. You. All."

Everyone laughed—the tension breaking.

"Alright," said Alex. "So we agree. We survive this trip. Together. And when we come back..."

He looked between Raven and Emily.

"...we resolve... this. Whatever this is."

They both nodded.
