Chapter 64: Tension

**[APARTMENT – 3 DAYS AFTER THE BATTLE WITH KAEL]**

Alex did a hundred push-ups.

Then a hundred squats.

Then a hundred sit-ups.

All without a shirt—the apartment was warm under the midday sun, and clothing would only get in the way.

**[Strength: 103 → 104 (+1)]**

**[Endurance improved: +2%]**

Small gains. But every point counted.

Three days since the battle with Kael. Three days of recovering while simultaneously training like a man possessed.

Because he knew—they all knew—that Kael was coming back.

The question was when.

"A hundred and one... a hundred and two..." he counted, shifting to one-arm push-ups now.

Sweat running down his back, muscles burning.

The white streak falling over his right eye—he shook it away, irritated.

Still not completely used to that permanent mark.

**"Master. Form. Improving."**

Grim (80cm form) watched from the corner, mentally keeping count.

"Thanks. I need to improve more—"

"Wow."

A woman’s voice from the doorway.

Alex almost lost his balance and turned his head.

Raven was in the doorway, two cups of water in hand, looking at him with an... interested expression.

"How long have you been there?" Alex asked, straightening up.

"Long enough." Raven walked forward and handed him a cup. "Since when do you train this... intensely?"

"Just lately. I need to rebuild strength after the battle."

Raven took a sip from her own water, eyes scanning—not subtly—Alex’s bare torso.

New scars from his fight with Kael. Defined muscles from constant training. And that white streak adding a touch of...

"The streak really works with the shirtless look," she commented casually. "Sexy veteran warrior type."

Alex nearly choked on his water. "Sexy?"

"What? It’s an objective observation." A small smile. "Emily thinks the same. She mentioned it yesterday."

"Emily—WHAT?"

**"Both. Observe. Master. Frequently,"** Grim added innocently. **"When. He trains. Without. Shirt. They always. Appear."**

"Grim, you’re not helping."

**"Just. Reporting. Facts."**

Raven laughed—a light, genuine sound.

"Relax. It’s a compliment. Besides..." She turned to leave. "...you should see the way Emily looks at you when you’re not watching. Definitely interested."

"Raven!"

She just waved a hand on her way out.

"But remember you’re mine."

Leaving Alex confused, flushed, and wondering whether he should start wearing a shirt for future training sessions.

---

**[BACK COURTYARD – 2 HOURS LATER]**

Raven was training her control of Fragment 3.

And she had decided—for completely practical reasons, obviously—to wear the outfit Fragment 3 had given her at the Fallen Citadel.

Fitted black corset. Layered skirt that left her legs exposed. Crimson cloak. Decorative garters.

Not because she liked the outfit (well, maybe a little).

But because when she activated Fragment 3, her clothing transformed anyway. Better to get used to it.

At least that was her excuse.

**[Fragment 3 – Partial Activation]**

Her eyes blazed emerald green.

Her ornate scythe materialized.

A hundred skeletons emerged from the ground—level 40 each, perfectly controlled.

"Delta formation," she ordered.

The skeletons reorganized instantly—a perfect triangle, twenty at the vanguard, forty on each flank.

"Circle formation."

*SWOOSH.*

Defensive ring, shields facing outward.

"Coordinated attack—imaginary target at twelve meters."

All of them charged simultaneously, attacks synchronized.

"Excellent," Raven murmured.

Then she felt it—a presence watching her.

She turned her head.

Alex was at the second floor window, looking down.

Specifically, looking with eyes slightly wider than usual.

When their eyes met, Alex froze—clearly caught.

Raven smiled—slow, deliberate.

She spun her scythe in an elaborate arc—a completely unnecessary movement that *definitely* showed off her figure.

Then winked.

Alex vanished from the window so fast he had probably used **[Shadow Step]**.

Raven laughed.

"Too easy," she murmured.

**"Sister. Hand. Plays with. Core. On purpose,"** remarked one of the skeletons—no, Fragment 3 speaking through it.

"Maybe a little."

**"Thought. The pervert. Was me. My carrier. Is more. I like her."**

---

**[LIVING ROOM – THAT EVENING]**

The team gathered for dinner—a simple meal Emily had prepared (she was a better cook than Alex and Raven combined).

Alex avoided eye contact with Raven for the first ten minutes.

She noticed. Smiled into her plate.

"So," said Emily, breaking the silence, "we need to talk about Kael."

The atmosphere turned serious immediately.

"Sera sent me a message today," Emily continued. "She received information from contacts in other cities."

She pulled out the paper—an intelligence report.

"Kael hired four additional hunters. All confirmed. All level 50 or above."

Alex studied the names:

**[HUNTER 1: Marcus "Bloodhound" Venn – Level 51]**

Specialty: Tracking, ambushes

Companion: Hellhound (Level 53)

**[HUNTER 2: Lyra "Shadow" Kane – Level 49]**

Specialty: Stealth, assassinations

Companion: Mist Serpent (Level 50)

**[HUNTER 3: Thorne "Hammer" Blackwood – Level 52]**

Specialty: Heavy combat, tanking

Companion: Iron Golem (Level 54)

**[HUNTER 4: Aria "Wind" Solis – Level 50]**

Specialty: Elemental magic, support

Companion: Air Elemental (Level 51) 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

"Five total counting Kael," said Raven, reading over Alex’s shoulder. "All experienced. All dangerous."

"When do they arrive?" Alex asked.

Emily hesitated.

"That’s the bad part. Sera received confirmation two hours ago..."

A pause.

"They’re already on their way. They’ll arrive in three days."

Absolute silence.

"Three days," Alex repeated. "Not two weeks. Three days."

"Yes. Kael accelerated the timeline. Probably because he knows the more time he gives us, the stronger we get."

Alex leaned back in his chair, processing.

Three days to prepare for war against five level 50+ hunters.

**"Can we win?"** Grim asked directly.

Everyone looked at Alex.

He considered it honestly.

"One on one, any of them destroys me. Level 40 versus 50+ is a massive gap."

"But," he continued, "it’s not just me. We’re a team."

He looked at Raven. "You have Fragment 3. Level 56 effective. Perfect control."

Then at Grim. "Your improved Awakening Form. 617 souls collected."

Then at Emily. "Your purification that can forcibly end the Awakening. You’re my critical support."

"And I have Fragment 1—the Core." He touched the mark on his chest. "And **[Partial Awakening]** if it becomes absolutely necessary."

Silence while everyone processed.

"So?" Raven asked.

"So," Alex smiled—not a happy expression, a *predator’s* expression, "we show them why two Fragments of the Harvester together *plus* a Healer is a genuine nightmare."

---

**[RAVEN’S ROOM – 11 PM]**

Alex was still sleeping in Raven’s room—his own room was repaired but the furniture still hadn’t been replaced.

Which meant sharing space.

Normally that wasn’t a problem—Raven took the bed, Alex took the sleeping bag on the floor.

But tonight...

A knock at the door.

"Yeah?" Alex called from where he was arranging his sleeping bag.

Emily came in—wearing simple pajamas, chestnut hair loose around her shoulders.

"I can’t sleep," she admitted. "Thinking about the battle coming in three days."

"Me neither," Raven agreed from the bed, sitting cross-legged. "Too much adrenaline."

Alex nodded. "Same."

Silence.

Then Emily—impulsively—sat on the floor next to Alex’s sleeping bag.

"Can we just... talk? Until I get sleepy."

"Of course."

Raven slid off the bed and sat on Alex’s other side.

They formed a small circle—three humans and one 80cm skeleton.

"What do we talk about?" Alex asked.

"Anything. Anything except battles." Emily leaned back against the wall. "Tell me something about yourself. Something I don’t know."

Alex thought about it.

"Before the Academy, I wanted to be a blacksmith. Like my father—though he wasn’t around to teach me. He and my mother left when I was young. But I kept hoping they’d come back someday."

"Really?" Raven looked at him, surprised. "I can’t picture it."

"Nobody ever does. But I liked working with metal. Creating things. Fixing broken things." A sad smile. "Then Grim happened and... well. Plans changed. Though I don’t mind now."

"What about you?" Alex looked at Emily. "What did you want before the Temple?"

"A dancer," she admitted, flushing slightly. "Ballet, specifically."

"A dancer?" Raven blinked. "You?"

"I trained for ten years. Then..." She hesitated. "...my parents decided the Temple was a ’better future.’ More stable. More respectable."

"Do you miss it?" Alex asked.

"Every day."

A comfortable silence.

"Raven?" Emily asked. "What about you?"

"An assassin," Raven said simply. "I always wanted to be an assassin."

Both of them looked at her.

"...That’s dark," Alex remarked.

"I have the Harvester’s Fragment in my hand. ’Dark’ is relative."

They laughed—easy, natural.

The conversation flowed from there.

Childhood stories. Favorite foods. Embarrassing memories.

Grim chipped in occasionally, adding an undead perspective.

Hours passed.

Eventually, Emily fell asleep—her head resting on Alex’s shoulder.

Raven was beginning to drift off too.

"We should sleep," Alex murmured. "It’s going to be a long day tomorrow."

"Mm." Raven opened her eyes slightly. "Alex... about tomorrow..."

"Yeah?"

"We’re going to win, right?"

"Are you asking the youngest one here?"

"Alex..."

"Yes."

"You’re sure?"

"Sure."

A white lie. But a necessary one.

Raven smiled faintly, letting her head fall against Alex’s other shoulder.

Both girls asleep against him.

Grim watching from the corner.

**"Master. Lucky."**

"Shut up, Grim."

**"Just. Saying. Truth."**

Alex didn’t answer.

He just stayed there—the warmth of two people trusting him completely.

Three days.

In three days, the war would come.

And they had to be ready.

---

**[THE FOLLOWING DAY]**

"Again!" Alex called out.

Raven summoned twenty skeletons.

They charged at Alex from multiple angles.

Alex activated **[Battle Flow]**—stats climbing gradually.

He dodged the first strike, blocked the second, counterattacked the third.

**[Shadow Step]**—appeared behind the group.

**[Blood Weapon]**—second sword materialized.

Five skeletons destroyed in three seconds.

"Faster," Raven ordered.

Forty skeletons now.

Alex was sweating, breathing hard, but adapting.

Grim (Awakening Form) joined in—attacking from angles Alex couldn’t cover.

Their coordination improving.

Emily from the side—**[Holy Barrier]** blocking strikes that slipped past Alex’s defenses.

Teamwork flowing naturally.

**"STOP!"** Raven called after ten minutes.

Everyone halted, panting.

"Good," said Raven, studying them. "Much better than yesterday. But still not enough."

"What’s missing?" Alex asked.

"Perfect synchronization. Anticipation." Raven stepped forward. "When we enter a real battle, we can’t hesitate. We can’t second-guess. We have to move as *one*."

"How do we get there in two days?" Emily asked.

Raven smiled—the kind of expression that promised pain.

"We train until we can’t move. Then we train more."

---

**[THAT AFTERNOON]**

Alex was taking a break—sitting in the shade, drinking water.

Raven trained alone on the other side of the courtyard—Fragment 3 outfit, moving fluidly.

Every movement was a deadly art.

Her scythe spinning, her cloak billowing, her figure perfectly silhouetted against the setting sun.

Alex found himself... watching.

More than was appropriate.

"Nice view, isn’t it?"

Emily appeared beside him, smiling knowingly.

Alex nearly choked on his water. "I—I wasn’t—"

"Relax. It’s normal." Emily sat down. "She’s beautiful. You’re a healthy nineteen-year-old human. Simple math."

"It’s not that simple."

"Why not?"

"Because... we’re a team. Family. I can’t complicate that with... feelings."

Emily looked at him for a long moment.

"Alex. The feelings are already there. Pretending they aren’t only makes things more complicated."

Before Alex could respond—

"What are you two talking about?" Raven appeared suddenly.

Sweat gleaming on her skin. Hair slightly disheveled. Breathing a little hard.

Alex flushed furiously. "N-nothing. Just resting."

Raven looked between them—clearly unconvinced.

Then shrugged and sat down on Alex’s other side.

"Water?"

Alex handed her his bottle.

She drank—one long, slow pull.

Her throat working. A drop running along her jaw and down toward—

Alex tried not to look.

Failed completely.

Emily noticed. Smiled.

Grim from a distance: **"Sexual. Tension. Detected."**

All three of them ignored him.

---

**[NIGHT – 11 PM]**

Alex was lying in his sleeping bag, staring at the ceiling.

Then—

**DEVELOP COORDINATED STRATEGY WITH FRAGMENT 3**

**POTENTIAL FRAGMENT SYNERGY UNEXPLORED**

Alex read the last line three times.

*Fragment synergy.*

They hadn’t tested that.

What would happen if he and Raven activated their Fragments simultaneously?

Would they amplify each other?

Or interfere?

Only one way to find out.

"Raven," he called softly.

"Mmm?" She was half asleep in the bed.

"Tomorrow we need to try something."

"What?"

"Activating our Fragments at the same time. And seeing what happens."

Silence.

Then Raven sat up, fully awake.

"That’s... risky. We don’t know how they’ll react to each other."

"I know. But three days. We need every advantage we can get."

Raven considered it.

"Fine. But with Emily present. Just in case."

"Agreed."

She lay back down.

Alex closed his eyes.

Three days.

In three days, everything would change.

For better or for worse.
