My SSS-Rank Clone Talent: I Level Up Endlessly!-Chapter 218: A little Scheme!?
Chapter 218: A little Scheme!?
Grey and Lucy made their way through the bustling streets, surrounded by an air of excitement.
A group of young children stood nearby, murmuring and practically screaming with enthusiasm.
"Do you think I can get a Silver Sword Grimoire?" one of them shouted.
"Stop daydreaming," another child replied with a mocking tone.
"Hmph, I bet you can’t even get a grimoire."
"Wanna fight? I’ll be like the Legendary Commoner who got a Diamond Insightful Grimoire and became one of the strongest in our kingdom!" the child said, raising his fist defiantly.
"Diamond? Stop dreaming, I heard that Grimoire practically fell in love with the Legendary Commoner."
Listening to the children’s constant chattering, Grey appeared calm on the surface, but a flicker of doubt crept into his heart.
’Seducing a grimoire... will that day ever come?’ he thought bitterly.
He daydreamed for a moment, imagining himself loosening the collar of his shirt ever so slightly, while a grimoire floated around him, blushing and fangirling like a devoted admirer.
"We’ve arrived, Grey," Lucy called out.
"Huh?"
Grey snapped out of his daze. His gaze shifted forward and his eyes widened. A massive coliseum loomed ahead.
"Is this the place?"
"Yeah, where else did you think it’d be?" Lucy chuckled as she walked ahead, and Grey quickly followed without a word.
Looking around, Grey was taken aback by the sheer number of people gathered.
"These people aren’t just from the capital," Lucy explained. "They’ve come from all over the kingdom. This is their chance to become the strongest Book Tamer."
"Oh," Grey mumbled, nodding absentmindedly.
They joined a line of hundreds at the entrance, though surprisingly, it moved quickly.
"You have 20 hertz of spiritual energy."
At the front of the line sat an old man, lazily yawning behind a table. In front of him rested a glowing crystal. One by one, people placed their hands on the crystal, and the old man called out their spiritual energy readings without much enthusiasm.
The middle-aged woman who had been announced to have 20 hertz of spiritual energy immediately looked disappointed. With a sulking expression, she quietly stepped inside.
No one said anything to her directly.
"Sigh, she was so cheerful before," the man in front of Grey muttered with a pitying tone. "But with that level of spiritual energy, the chance of taming even a Bronze-ranked book is less than one percent. Looks like she might leave empty-handed."
Grey’s brow twitched as he listened.
’Why do you care so much about other people?’ he thought irritably.
People were always busy minding others’ business, yet rarely took a good look at themselves.
Everyone was quick to judge others, but when it came to themselves?
Ha, they subconsciously avoided their own reality.
"I wonder how many spiritual hertz you’ll score, considering you only just Awakened," Lucy murmured behind him. "It probably hasn’t increased even a single hertz. But don’t worry, if you don’t make it today, you can try again in four years."
Grey turned to look at her, eyes filled with quiet amusement, but said nothing.
He already knew what this woman was thinking. Still, he didn’t care, because, to him, it wouldn’t matter in the end.
Although he could sense a certain greed from this woman, there was no malice behind it. Grey could see that clearly with his True Eyes, a rare ability that revealed the true nature of people.
She had intentionally delayed giving him the Awakening Stone, hoping that his spiritual energy would remain low, low enough to fail in taming a grimoire. That way, he would be forced to stay by her side, unable to move forward.
Grey could only give her a silent thumbs up. Even this seemingly innocent girl could scheme when it came to something she truly wanted.
Still, none of this really mattered to him. Her little tricks would be meaningless in the end.
Meanwhile, the old man’s voice rang out again and again with steady monotony.
"You have 10 spiritual htz."
"You have 59 spiritual htz."
"You have 96 spiritual htz."
Many entered in silence, heads lowered, disappointed by their results.
"You have 102 spiritual htz."
Those who crossed the hundred-mark walked in with pride, their heads held high.
The line moved quickly, and soon, Grey’s turn arrived, under the nervous and slightly guilty gaze of Lucy.
’I regret it a little... I shouldn’t have done this. But the more time I spend with him, the more I want it to last...’ she thought, biting her lip.
Grey stepped forward, now standing in front of the table and face-to-face with the old man.
The old man’s drooping eyelids suddenly snapped open, and his eyes locked onto Grey with a startled expression.
"Y-You...!?"
"Hm?" Grey tilted his head, confused. "What’s wrong, old man?"
"N-Nothing, nothing," the old man muttered quickly, waving it off. He extended his hand in an inviting gesture. "If you reach 100 spiritual hertz, you’re considered a mid-tier trainee. If you reach 500, you’re classified as a high-tier trainee."
Grey’s ears perked up at that. "What about higher than that, old man?"
"Oh?" The old man raised his brows, suddenly more talkative than he had been with any of the previous contestants.
"If you can reach 1,000 spiritual hertz, you’ll qualify as a low-tier disciple. So get to it, brat."
"Okay," Grey mumbled with a casual shrug as he placed his hand on the crystal orb.
Lucy watched with anticipation gleaming in her eyes.
Her gaze fixed on the crystal orb as it began to change, its light flickering and surging more violently than before.
Then, the old man froze.
His body began to tremble, his eyes twitching as he stared at Grey in disbelief:
"Y-You... how is this possible?"
The people behind Grey were stunned, their eyes wide as they witnessed the old man’s shocked reaction.
"How much does it take to make the old man startle like that?" someone whispered in awe.
Lucy’s heart raced with anxiousness and disbelief when she saw this.
