Chapter 164: Chapter 164: "Break Up with Her Immediately.

"Jack, if you could go back to a year ago and choose again, would you still want me to be with you?"

Before Jack could respond, Renee quickly smiled. "Jack, thank you."

There was no need to explain what she was thanking him for. Saying "thank you" at this moment already conveyed everything.

Thank you, Jack, for gifting her a dreamlike experience. Thank you, Jack, for protecting her under immense pressure from all sides.

Even though he had done many things that hurt her, most of the harm was inflicted in bed, and a small part was through his words.

On the other side of the phone, the sound of a lighter wheel being flicked was heard.

Jack said nothing, smoking silently.

Renee added, "Do what you need to do, don’t worry about me. I’ll take care of myself and wait for you at home."

She didn’t ask him what happened. Asking wouldn’t help, as she couldn’t help him anyway.

At this moment, Renee wasn’t thinking about whether she and Jack were a good match. Instead, she wished she could be of help to him.

No matter what, she was now genuinely Jack’s girlfriend.

Her boyfriend encountered an issue, and as a girlfriend, she couldn’t help him and couldn’t be by his side to comfort him.

Very disappointing and distressing, a helplessness that is agonizing.

Just like a young boy meeting the girl he likes most at the best age, yet unable to bring her happiness, that kind of powerlessness and guilt is hard to bear.

Yet this sense of helplessness isn’t something that could be changed by trying hard.

This is precisely why it feels even more powerless.

After hanging up the phone, Renee turned her head to look out the window.

The sunset was as red as fire, burning the sky crimson.

As Renee gazed at it, she felt as if her eyes were being burned by the sunset, causing them to sting and fill with tears.

She really wanted to tell Jack to give up, that they weren’t suitable for each other, and to stop persistently holding on.

But she couldn’t say it now, at least not at this moment.

Jack was already troubled, and she couldn’t add fuel to the fire for him.

However, she felt that breaking up was the most correct choice for them.

From Jack’s position, he needed a partner who could help him, someone who could stand by him through thick and thin when he encountered difficulties, rather than someone like her, a regular person who is of no use to him.

Not to mention that she hadn’t even graduated from college yet, and couldn’t offer him any help at all. Even if she graduated, as an ordinary undergraduate, with no network or background, what help could she offer him?

Butler Pierce glanced at Renee through the built-in rearview mirror and comforted her, "Don’t worry, sir is not an average person, he won’t encounter too much trouble."

Renee wiped her tears carelessly and forced a smile amid her sadness, "Yeah, he’ll be fine, I believe in him."

-

At midnight, Jack came out of a certain department.

The autumn night in Northcity was already quite cool.

However, Jack was only wearing a thin, summer-style white shirt, its hem loosely tucked into his waistband. The wind pressed the shirt against his waist and abdomen, outlining the defined contours of his abs.

In the dim night, he walked down the stone steps with a resolute expression, facing against the wind, with one hand in his pocket and the other carrying a suit jacket.

Kyle waited outside the car. Seeing Jack, he rushed over with a solemn expression and asked, "Did those bastards give you any trouble?"

Jack sneered, "What trouble could they cause? How dare they?" 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

His demeanor was as arrogant and cold as ever.

Kyle glanced at his thin shirt and advised with concern, "The night is cold, you should wear your jacket to avoid catching a cold."

Jack extended his hand, "Cigarette."

Kyle turned and took out a packet of Taishan Buddha Light from the car, handing it to him and lighting the cigarette with a lighter.

Jack bit down on the cigarette, opened the car’s back door, and sat inside.

Kyle sat in the front to drive and asked, "Where to?"

Jack exhaled a puff of thick white smoke and replied with a cold, low voice, "To the office."

Kyle stopped speaking and drove steadily.

Jack smoked half a cigarette, extinguished it, and said coldly, "How’s the evidence collection going on Harold Leonard’s end?"

Kyle replied, "Almost done, just missing a final critical piece of evidence."

After speaking, he glanced at Jack’s expression through the built-in rearview mirror.

Seeing Jack squinting his eyes, Kyle quickly added, "I’ve given him a three-day deadline."

Jack said, "Two days, hand over all evidence of Matthew Shaw’s criminal activities in a maximum of two days. Also, arrange a meeting with Declan Donovan."

Kyle promptly agreed, "Alright." Then he shifted the conversation and asked, "Should we continue investigating the person backing Matthew Shaw?"

Jack coldly uttered, "Investigate!"

Kyle advised, "Third brother, maybe we should let it go. Our frame-up this time is likely a warning from that one. If we back off, he might too. But if we continue investigating, it could escalate and offend even more people, possibly leading to a point of no return."

Jack tightened his jaw and said sternly, "If you’re scared, you can quit now and leave."

Kyle laughed, "Come on, if I resign voluntarily, I won’t get any severance pay. Mr. Yates, don’t try to trap me; I’m not falling for it!"

Jack also chuckled, "If you don’t want to leave, stop saying such discouraging things."

Kyle hesitated momentarily, then said, "There’s something even more discouraging, but I’m not sure if I should say it."

Jack said, "Shut up."

Kyle stopped smiling and said, "This time, multiple related departments are investigating us, among which the head of the Drug Monitoring Department is Wren’s uncle."

Jack responded faintly, "Hmm."

Kyle continued, "And the director of the Energy Bureau is Wren’s father, Hector Hawthorne. That old guy took office this February, and ever since, several projects we had successfully approved before have been returned."

Jack said, "No hurry."

Kyle went on, "Our medical project was halted, and our energy project is stuck. Since our energy initiative is connected to military industrial research, the entire military industry chain has been interrupted. Third brother, continuing this way, our losses will be too significant."

Jack said, "Business has its ups and downs."

Kyle hesitated for a moment and then exploded with, "What I’m trying to say is, if you marry Eldest Miss Hawthorne, wouldn’t all those issues resolve themselves?"

Jack sneered, "Are you suggesting I sell myself for money?"

Kyle quickly clarified, "No, no, that’s not what I meant."

He hastily explained, "I meant to say that you clearly have a shortcut available to you, a way to reach the top effortlessly. Why must you choose the thorn-filled path, choosing hardship needlessly?"

Jack chuckled, "During World War II, when the nation faced great challenges, teetering on the brink of destruction, if it wasn’t for our ancestors who endured hardship, do you think the Cathan People would still exist? Would you be able to sit here, speaking Chinese with me?"

Kyle said, feeling slightly pressured, "...No, third brother, that cap is too big. Also, your private situation and national affairs, aren’t they different matters entirely?"

Jack said, "If Hector Hawthorne is truly blocking my projects because I won’t marry his daughter, then he’s not fit to be my father-in-law."

Kyle said, "Alright, you’re the boss, what you say goes."

Jack said, "Stop talking and drive properly."

Kyle didn’t say another word and increased the car’s speed.

Jack picked up the phone and called Kevin Lynch, "Organize the people from the legal department for a meeting in half an hour."

Kevin is Ian Lynch’s cousin, the legal director of Starkwood Group, and the most renowned lawyer in Northcity.

Then he called Harvey Lancaster, "Come back now, leave the Kravos Island matter for now."

Right after Jack hung up on Harvey, his mother, Chloe Bell called him.

After a few rings, Jack answered.

Chloe didn’t keep her tone soft, speaking forcefully, "Leave that student girl immediately, and take gifts to the Hawthorne Family at dawn."

Jack sneered, "What if I don’t break up?"

Chloe said, "If you don’t break up, you can resign as CEO and leave the group. Felix, you’re almost thirty, no longer a rebellious teenager, think about the consequences before acting. You choose, the girl or your career, think it through. Give me a response by nine this morning; once it’s nine, I’ll call a shareholders meeting."

Pausing for a second, Chloe’s voice turned stern, "It’s one in the morning now; you have eight hours to think it over and get back to me."
