My Notoriety Spreads Throughout the World-Chapter 307 - 279: Storm Song—Prologue (Part 3)
Xu Xiaoyou was taken aback, her heart instantly on alert, could it be that the other party had learned some truth?
"Letting me wander in circles in the fog, bumping around, looking at my bewildered and helpless silly state, aren't you quite pleased with yourself?"
Xu Xiaoyou took a slight step back, looking hoarsely at the girl with obscured lips and teeth.
"I will not forgive you... will not forgive!"
Bai Youyou raised the photo, pointing at the buildings on the street with construction scaffolding and draped in blue dust cloth, her flushed cheeks full of seriousness, "You clearly guessed where that chemistry teacher was making new Moon Sugar early on, and also deduced his method of choosing the location, yet you didn't tell me!"
Bai Youyou was too agitated, she couldn't catch her breath, let out a hiccup, covered her mouth and paused for a moment before continuing,
"Too much, really too much."
A great weight fell from Xu Xiaoyou's heart, so this is what the other party was referring to, she thought it was something else. She hadn't yet thought of countermeasures for when the other party's memory recovered.
"Sorry, Youyou, I did suspect something at the time, but I couldn't be sure, the problem was with me." Xu Xiaoyou sat down beside the girl.
"Good that you know, I am your client now, how could you hide it from me."
Upon seeing that photo, Xu Xiaoyou guessed the location where Heidelberg was making the new Moon Sugar, and deduced his way of selecting sites. Every year before winter, Dragonfly Town suffers from fly infestations, and often at that time, the homeowners would call in pest control teams for a thorough cleaning. During the cleaning, the houses are covered with this blue dust cloth, a phenomenon very common in Chichu Heaven, often not attracting much attention.
Heidelberg took advantage of this method to make new Moon Sugar in these dust cloth-covered houses. Once production was complete, he only needed to move the equipment and release the collected exhaust fumes into different neighborhoods of Dragonfly Town to largely conceal his activities.
How to ensure that the homeowners wouldn't return during the sugar-making process?
Xu Xiaoyou's gaze went through Bai Youyou's strands of hair, falling on the doorknob of the house shown in the photo, various rolled-up advertisement papers stuck in the gap between the handle and the door. If someone lived in the house for long periods, turning the doorknob would make the papers fall; otherwise, it meant the owner had abandoned it, and Heidelberg and his cohorts could openly enter, posing as the pest control team.
The previously sluggish economy of Dragonfly Town led many investors to abandon it, turning their eyes to other cities, causing many young people to leave their homes to seek opportunities elsewhere, gradually resulting in many abandoned houses scattered across the city.
Bai Youyou placed her face on her arms, blocking Xu Xiaoyou's view, suddenly asking very seriously, "Am I important to you?"
Xu Xiaoyou paused, even for her, it's a difficult question to answer. The girl's confusion was just that. The other party was the first person she truly opened her heart to after coming into this world. She had, on some night, opened her long-closed heart to Bai Youyou and uttered words kept deep within. They hadn't experienced many romantic or touching adventures, but were each other's first scenery in engaging with this world.
Even the first time they held each other's hands, walking along the beach lit with lights, silently voiced their cautious exploration of the world, spoke of the girls' greenness and restraint. Perhaps they should be like travelers on the Starfield Plains, whose life trajectories intersect like two crossing lines, embracing and then never connected again.
Fate played a huge joke, reuniting them in this way.
"Perhaps." Xu Xiaoyou gave a vague answer, sipping the remaining half cup of golden tulip on the table, calm star-like lights danced in her gentle eyes.
"But you are very important to me," Bai Youyou said.
Xu Xiaoyou's hand froze in mid-air while raising her glass.
"Even though my memory feels like an unassembled dream, broken and incomplete, countless subconscious cocoons of light, those repetitive and fragmented images all tell me you are very important to me."
Bai Youyou's voice grew softer, lying on her arms with heavy eyelids.
"Clearly not remembering anything, these words just came out like that."
"Look at your troubled expression." Bai Youyou closed her eyes, "As if I'm a troublesome devil, after today I won't come to Mint Green Leaf to find you again. I also have a lot of my own things to do, won't be dragged down by these redundant, cumbersome emotions."
"See you next time." Bai Youyou fell asleep.
"See you next time."
Xu Xiaoyou also got up, settled the girl's bill, returned to her room, and upon entering saw many things out of place, with a figure wrapped up like a koala, seemingly sleeping sweetly on the sofa, as "The Legend of the Creeper" played on the TV, not far from her bed.
Everything in the room was a mess, except the bed which remained tidy, untouched by the Young Master's mischief.
Xu Xiaoyou thought she had really stirred up a beauty's nest today, a faint twitch at her lips as she nudged the unknown creature on the sofa.
Mori rarely had quiet moments, after sitting up and yawning, she pushed away the dark red strands pressing against her face, rubbing her drowsy eyes, poured herself a glass of water.
"Why are you here?" Xu Xiaoyou sipped hot tea to warm up.
Mori frowned: "Didn't I say I would wait for you at Mint Green Leaf bar? It's so late coming back, I almost thought you got kidnapped by the mob."
"Originally, I planned to find you." Mori said seriously, "But my drowsiness negated that unrealistic idea."
"Seeing you safe is much reassuring."
"Alright, Mint Green Leaf bar doesn't serve guests after ten, you can leave." Xu Xiaoyou smiled, waving her hand, turning off the TV while taking a bite of Vermilion Saliva with her hot tea.
"Oh wow, after all my hard work waiting for you, you just come back to chase me away, You, is our relationship that shallow already!"
"Not necessarily any hard work, forgot to remind you, you drool when you sleep."
Mori pumped her fists angrily, casually wiping her mouth, and reluctantly moved toward the door as Xu Xiaoyou pushed her shoulders, seeing she was indeed determined to send her away, Mori quickly raised the letter in her hand:
"This, this!"
Xu Xiaoyou took the letter from Mori's hand, her gaze changing upon seeing the blue feather on the envelope, "This is..."
"Found it by your windowsill, it was raining outside at the time. I didn't want it to get wet so I brought it in. Why look at me like that? I didn't peek, I still have my principles."
After handing the letter to Xu Xiaoyou, Mori made a face and stuck out her tongue, dashing away in her pajamas and slippers.
Sitting by the windowsill, she opened the letter, recognizing Tang Xin's handwriting—it was dated January 20, exactly today.
You, today I did something really incredible, that was my first time experiencing such a self, even now, I'm too excited to calm down.
I feel like I've taken a big step, across the distant star river, forgive me for not being able to convey this joy through words, I am progressing toward my goal.
Like in "Red and Black", perhaps I am standing at the crossroads of choices, one side is the vague emotion, the other my ideal, if I must make an irrevocable choice, I would solemnly choose the latter.
But, forgive my selfishness.
I hope when I stand in that splendid hall, You could appear beneath the stands, through your gaze convey encouragement to me, as before, exclusively for me.
Forgive my selfish wish to have you accompany me when I realize my dreams.
Remember I once said I wanted to try to ignite myself like wild grass, to melt the cold winter of snow?
No matter if you'll come back, whether you can see this letter, see these words I wrote, I hope in the final moments of life I can touch upon the trace of your existence.
This fervent yet vague emotion, I hope you might discern it.
