Chapter 342: 342. Shadow Recall

"We’re done with the monsters on this side, Your Highness." Stellani’s voice cut through the air, silencing the bickering between Nyxa and Tama. "But... I don’t know about her. She’s dying, and fast."

Tama bolted toward the spot where her Shadowlings had intercepted the beasts that had been attacking Ravaine. "Good. Now go," Tama commanded. "Scour the kingdom. Kill every monster still lurking in the dark."

With a silent ripple, her Shadowlings vanished into the floorboards.

Nyxa followed close behind. The moment her eyes landed on the limp, broken body on the cold stone, guilt curdled in her stomach.

Ravaine, this honorable knight had sacrificed everything to save her and now, she was barely breathing.

"Ravaine!" Nyxa cried, seizing the knight’s bloodied hands. "I’m going to get you help! I’ll find the Royal Healers... I’ll get you back on your feet, okay?"

But even as she spoke, the lie tasted like ash. The Royal Healers had already fallen, torn apart by the very monsters they sought to stop. The kingdom was a graveyard.

Feeling the touch of her Queen, Ravaine offered a weak, final smile—the pride of a soldier who had fulfilled her duty. Then, with one last shuddering heave of her chest, she went still.

Tama stepped forward, her expression unreadable. "I don’t have healing magic, but if I turn her into a Shadowling, I might be able to sustain her through my *False Night*," she explained.

Nyxa’s eyes brimmed with tears as Ravaine’s skin grew cold. "You want to turn her into a black cat? Like how you stole my Grimfangs and turned them into... into things?" Her voice cracked with a mix of grief and fury. "You want to take everything from me, don’t you? Even my title. People are calling you Queen now. Is this what this is? Revenge for years of mistreatment? The Black Cats finally taking over?"

Tama didn’t snap back. She stood quietly, her gaze lingering on the fallen knight. When she finally spoke, her voice was low and steady.

"She was a great knight," Tama said, gesturing to Ravaine. "A raccoon beastfolk... yet she protected a cat-woman like you without hesitation. To her last breath. I think we could both learn something from her."

Nyxa squinted through her tears. "What are you getting at?"

"I want us to be like her. To have each other’s back. Felmora is the land of the catfolk, but we are dying because we aren’t united. I am the last of my clan, Nyxa, and I dream of a future where no one is judged by the color of their fur. What do you think?"

Nyxa frowned. "And you... you want to rule this place to make sure that happens?"

Tama let out a soft, dry chuckle. "Oh, no. I have no intention of sitting on that throne. When my subordinates call me Queen, they don’t mean of the kingdom. They mean the Queen of Shadows." She extended a hand. "I’ll protect Felmora from the darkness while you rule it. Just like I did today. Do we have a deal?"

Nyxa looked at the hand, her mind racing. Tama had saved her life. She had saved the city. But... "The Church... they still consider your kind an abomination. How will—"

"Forget the Church," Tama interjected. "My Master and I are going to tear down those oppressive rules. We’re creating a world where people can actually live in freedom."

"Master?" Nyxa echoed.

"Yes. Asher Reynolds."

At the mention of that name, Nyxa’s hesitation vanished. She stood up immediately and gripped Tama’s hand firmly. "Then let’s break the rules together."

Tama smirked. ’One step closer to my dream.’

She crouched over Ravaine, placing a hand on the knight’s forehead. "Shadow Arts: Open Evolution Path."

[Action Failed]

[Cause: Target is deceased.]

Tama’s face fell. She couldn’t turn a corpse into a Shadowling. It didn’t work like that.

But then, a system chime rang in her mind.

[Ding!]

[Recommended Action: Use the S-rank skill recently acquired to restore the target and others to life.]

Tama stared at the floating blue text in disbelief. ’Resurrection?’ She quickly pulled up her menu.

’Open new skill slots!’

Nyxa watched, confused, as Tama froze mid-handshake, her eyes darting across thin air since she couldn’t see her system screen.

[New Skill: Shadow Recall]

[Rank: SSS]

[Description: A forbidden technique that retrieves a departed soul from the boundary of life and death.]

[Conditions: Target must have died within 3 hours. Body must be intact.]

[Cost: Extreme Mana consumption. May drain Life Force if Mana is insufficient.]

Tama’s face lit up. She pumped Nyxa’s hand excitedly. "I think I can bring them back! All of them!"

"All of....who??" Nyxa asked, confused.

"Our dead people. I can resurrect them."

"Don’t joke about that," Nyxa snapped, pulling away. "Once a person is gone, they’re gone. There’s no such thing as resurrection."

Ignoring her, Tama checked her stats. Her mana was at 50% after the teleportation from Shangani. It was a massive gamble. She closed her eyes and whispered, "Activate Shadow Recall."

The effect was instantaneous. The shadows in the hallway roared to life as if splashed with boiling water. They surged upward, swallowing the magic lamps and plunging the world into total darkness. A violent wind began to howl, whipping Tama’s hair around her face.

Nyxa hit the floor, shielding her face from the crushing pressure of the mana.

The shadows expanded, rushing out of the palace and sweeping across the entire kingdom.

Tama felt herself dissolve into the darkness. She could see everything—the destruction, the piles of the dead—but more importantly, she saw the souls.

Thousands of shimmering blue spheres drifted in the air. Among them were twisted red souls of the dead monsters as well.

She realized with a jolt of horror that the chimeras were fueled by human spirits. Her hatred for Moriel burned hotter than ever.

Tama began spinning threads of shadow, snatching the blue souls and sewing them back into their original bodies. But the strain was agonizing. Her nose began to bleed; her legs buckled. In seconds, her mana bar hit zero.

She expected to collapse, but a new notification flashed:

[User Exhausted. Sacrificing 1 of 9 Lives to restore Stamina and Mana.]

’The legend of cats having nine lives is real?’ She gasped for air. ’But if regular cats had them, they wouldn’t stay dead. It must be a perk of the Shadow Patriarch.’

She didn’t stop. She sacrificed five more lives to keep going. She grunted, gasping for breath as she tethered souls to flesh, leading the monster spirits toward the cycle of reincarnation.

She couldn’t save everyone—some bodies were too far gone, some melted to bones when the Behemoths attacked—but across the city, at least half of the population of the dead ones opened their eyes, back to life.

As the kingdom regained its breath, Tama lost hers.

She slumped over, unconscious, unaware that she had just played perfectly into her enemy’s hands.
