Chapter 341: 341. The hallway.

Meanwhile...

Deep inside the royal palace of Felmora, in a hidden underground escape passage, Queen Nyxa was running for her life.

The petite, blonde cat girl was gasping, her lungs burning as she struggled to keep up with Ravaine, a raccoon-kin Commander whose boots thudded rhythmically against the stone.

"What about the others?" Nyxa gasped, her voice cracking. Her crown was long gone, her golden hair matted with sweat. "My people... the palace staff... what happens to them?"

"Some made it to the secret vaults. Don’t worry about them, my queen," Ravaine said, her raccoon ears pinned back. "Just worry about getting out of Felmora. It’s over. It’s not safe here anymore."

Nyxa’s feet were screaming. As a queen who spent her days playing games and looking for any excuse to be entertained, she wasn’t built for this.

Suddenly, Ravaine’s ears twitched. she screeched to a halt, spinning around to face the darkness they’d just come from.

Nyxa stopped, looking up with a terrified expression. "Is... is something there?"

Ravaine didn’t answer. Her face went grim. "I wasn’t hearing things. We’re being followed. My queen, get behind me!"

Nyxa didn’t hesitate; she cowered behind her guard’s back.

Ravaine unsheathed her sword and planted her feet firmly to the ground, holding a portable shield in her left hand.

The only light came from the dim magic lamps, casting long, flickering shadows on the stone walls.

Then came the quick, and heavy sounds of footsteps, followed by a chorus of manic, high-pitched laughter.

A hoard of monsters rushed out of the dark.

"Tsk... Lesser Hyenas?" Ravaine spat, bracing herself.

They weren’t the strongest, but they were the worst to die by. Hunters called them ’Slow Eaters.’ They didn’t go for the kill shot; they took small bites of moving targets, chewing while the prey was still screaming, waiting for them to bleed out.

The hallway filled with their irritating laughs, echoing off the vaulted ceiling until it sounded like a hundred demons were laughing at them.

One beast lunged from the darkness, a mass of mangy fur and yellowed teeth.

As Ravaine swung her blade, two more leaped from her flank. Then the magic shield on her left hand suddenly lit up, projecting translucent hexagonal barriers that caught the monsters mid-air.

There was a loud crack that could be heard as the monsters slammed their muzzles into the hard light.

"How’s that for a feast, you vermin?" Ravaine growled, though her breath was coming faster. ""This shield is a relic of the royal house. It automatically protects my blind spots!"

"That’s great for you!" Nyxa shrieked from behind her, clutching Ravaine’s cape. "But there are dozens of them! How do you plan on killing them all?!"

It was a question she had no answers to. There were at least twenty of the monsters, and they were cautious, circling just out of reach.

The monsters laughed louder, the sound bouncing off the walls.

"I swear on my honor as a knight, I will protect you!" Ravaine barked.

She tried. But the shield fed on her mana, and it could only project three hexagonal barriers at a time.

The Hyenas realized it quickly. They started attacking in groups, sacrificing one or two to the blade just so the others could get a bite in.

Ravaine managed to hack a few apart, but the small bites were adding up.

Her knees were shredded. Her legs became a messy gore of ripped red meat. The entire hallway began to stink of her blood. Still, she refused to let a single one pass.

"Please... my Queen... run!" Ravaine screamed, her voice bubbling with blood. "I can’t... I can’t hold them much longer!... driving her sword through one monster’s skull while another tore a chunk out of her thigh.

Nyxa froze, watching the gore unfold. The monsters were laughing while her guard was being eaten alive, piece by piece.

"Go... my Queen. Please," Ravaine’s voice cracked. "The survivors need their Queen! You have to live!"

Nyxa turned and bolted. She ran until her lungs felt like they would burst, the laughter of the Hyenas trailing behind her like a funeral dirge. But she wasn’t fast enough.

One of the beasts, more agile than the rest, used the wall as a springboard, vaulting over the dying Ravaine and landing in the passage ahead of the Queen.

Nyxa tripped over her own hem, slamming into the stone. She rolled onto her back, looking up into the milky, hungering eyes of the beast. Its jaws dripped with Ravaine’s lifeblood.

Time slowed. In the face of certain, agonizing death, her mind didn’t go to her kingdom or her gold. It went to a face she hadn’t seen in forever.

Asher Reynolds.

She remembered the blowjob tournament, the way she’d given her all just to win against him and how she’d lost. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

She remembered having sex with him while the entire kingdom watched. Even in the face of death, those were the moments that flashed by.

"Is this it?" she whispered, the monster’s hot, rancid breath hitting her face. "I only have one regret... I wanted to see him just one more time."

She squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the teeth to sink into her throat.

But instead of pain, she smelled something familiar.

The scent of Asher.

Her eyes snapped open. A dark cloak was fluttering in a sudden wind. A soft black tail with a white tip flickered before her.

The hallway filled with the whines of dying monsters and the squelch of a blade piercing flesh.

When her eyes adjusted, she saw Tama looking back over her shoulder. "You okay there, Queen Nyxa?"

Nyxa scrambled to her feet, her terror instantly replaced by jealousy.

She lunged forward, grabbing Tama by the collar and pulling her close, her nose twitching frantically.

"Why?" Nyxa demanded, her voice trembling.

Tama blinked, confused. "Uh... why what?"

"Why do you smell like him?" Nyxa hissed, her eyes narrowing. "You reek of Asher! Tell me why right now!"

Tama rolled her eyes, pushing the Queen back slightly. "Seriously? I pull you out of a monster’s mouth and the first thing you do is a scent check? You’re unbelievable."
