My Living Shadow System Devours To Make Me Stronger-Chapter 983 - 985: Another Feat
Standing there, Damon felt his mana pool slowly drawing from the ambient mana around him. He took a deep breath, shoulders rising and falling as his gaze stretched far beyond the mountain range. From that height, he could see faint flashes of destruction far, far on the horizon.
The war still raged against the demon races. Distant bursts of expulsion echoed like muffled thunder across the sky.
He reached into his cloak, fingers brushing past the fabric before pulling out the small communicator. He raised it to his mouth and activated it.
There was a small pause.
"I have a report," Damon said, his eyes still fixed on the horizon as if he could see the battlefield from here.
On the other end, Seras seemed to let out a breath of relief.
"Why didn’t you contact me sooner. What’s your situation."
Damon paused, lips pressing into a thin line as he considered how to even begin explaining their situation.
"Our situation..." he said slowly. "We’ve successfully infiltrated the demon city of Trace as participants in some lord’s tournament or something. I’m fuzzy on the details."
Seras went quiet.
Then she spoke.
"Did you say you infiltrated Trace."
"Yes. Is something wrong?" Damon asked, turning his head slightly, his eyes drifting toward the faint shimmer of the city barrier in the distance. A confused expression crossed his face.
"Yes. I mean no. Honestly, I thought that was impossible. You can’t infiltrate Trace. It’s a highly secured city. Only demons can enter," Seras said, explaining to him why what he did should have been impossible.
Damon narrowed his eyes at the barrier, focusing on it more intently now.
"It’s the barrier around the city, isn’t it," he asked, feeling a thin strand of cold sweat slide down the side of his face.
"Yes. The barrier was set up by one of the past Demon Lords, Paimon. I don’t know which one exactly. However, that barrier prevents humans or any goddess races from entering at all. You have to be a demon."
She took a deep breath before continuing, her tone growing more serious.
"Sending spies there is impossible. Even if they are well disguised, you’ll simply be sending them to their deaths."
Seras let out a groan, her voice turning stiff with frustration.
"I cannot believe you went there. You had one job. Gather information. Instead, you proceeded to walk straight into the lion’s den. If you are caught, if you don’t get killed instantly, you will become the greatest negotiation chip imaginable. The Temple, the Grand Duke, even the Empire would want you back. As for everyone else with you, they might be. Matia is a noble, so is Renata. They would probably be used for ransom for concessions. The rest are not important enough."
By the rest, she was referring to Wendy and Lana.
Damon rubbed his forehead slowly, exhaling through his nose.
He had to admit he was absurdly lucky. Deathless had almost pulled a fast one on him. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
Wendy was not part of the goddess races, so she was allowed into the city without any issues. Lana had once been a human, however Damon had turned her into a demonic human, so she was technically a demon.
Renata was demon kin to begin with. As for the trolls and goblins, they were not goddess races either, and after his bestowal they had been turned into demonic versions of what they initially were.
Seras continued scolding him for being reckless. Her initial mission for Damon had been simple, find a small settlement and get information. Damon, on the other hand, had asked for the biggest city in the area. His ignorance of the demon continent had walked him straight into one of the most dangerous cities possible.
Her voice finally steadied.
"Alright. Tell me your current status."
Damon smiled lightly and shook his head.
"Are you perchance worried about me."
Seras scoffed, her voice turning cold.
"I’m worried you’ll cause a disaster. We still have a mission to accomplish. Now stop wasting time and tell me. Or maybe you forgot I’m your commanding officer."
"Yes ma’am," Damon said with a smirk.
"Well, my situation isn’t bad. I’m currently the lord of the tallest tower in Trace and have a small army of war trolls, redcap goblins, and some balrogs."
There was a sharp pause.
"Wait. What. Balrogs. How."
"Oh, that. It was actually pretty easy. I beat a balrog in the fifth class and he begged to be my follower. I think his name is Gotrog. Pretty nice guy. A bit of a workaholic, but oh well."
Silence.
Seras had been under the impression Damon was barely scraping by, hiding in terror behind enemy lines.
Instead, he was living like a king.
He had balrogs under his command.
What was he, some sort of demon lord.
She might have believed it if she did not know his full background.
She knew everything there was to know about him. His mother had been her senior in school. His grandfather was the Grand Duke of the Empire who had slain a Demon Lord. His father was a commoner knight. And he himself was a hero of the goddess races.
Damon went on to tell her everything.
Well, most of it.
He left out the more sensitive parts.
"You... how do you keep getting away with this," she asked quietly.
"With what," Damon replied.
Seras closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose.
With everything.
From humans to elves to dragons, Damon made enemies everywhere. He should have died a million times over, yet he was still here.
Still alive.
"Forget it," she muttered.
"What have you learned about the Snake Temple."
Damon shook his head.
"Nothing so far. I only know this place has several Ashcroft fragments. Apparently the Snake Temple has been gathering them and intends to give them to the Victor."
Seras went silent for a moment, clearly thinking.
"I’m sorry, Damon, but you have a new mission now. What you’ve accomplished is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I’m going to need you to hold that identity. You’re our only successful spy behind enemy lines."
She exhaled slowly.
"I’ll report to High Command and we’ll see how to proceed from there. Be safe, okay
