Chapter 38: The journey

"Especially now that they are hunting an evil fox spirit."

"Evil fox spirit?"

"Yes, Tamamo-no-Mae"

Tamamo-no-Mae? Who’s that?

Dan looked at the burly demigod with a blank expression.

"The vile vixen?"

But he still got the same expression from Dan.

"I see..." he said as he nodded his head and stood up.

"Well, the story goes back a few thousand years ago. During the age when people knew little of the existence of the supernatural. Almost as it is now. Around that time, a fox got into the service of the empire.

"She was a beauty to behold, she was able to charm the emperor and his court. The emperor fell in love with her and decided to wed her. But then she wasn’t after the empire but the emperor himself. Mystriously, the emperor got sick and was at the verge of death"

"Through divination, it was found she was the cause. She was to be hunted and killed. But she was too powerful to be killed with mere mundane weapons, and so shamans and priests were put to hunt her down and kill her."

"But as crafty as she was, she knew that the human realm still had the protection of the gods, and she couldn’t go on a full rampage. So she drew the priest and shamans to the second heaven. Which is where the final battle took place."

The burly-haired demigod was talking as he walked around the room, and then he stopped at the table. His hands roamed around the table before he finally stopped. And picked up a very familiar fox mask. Dan’s fox mask.

"The final battle went on for days which saw the likes of powerful priest such as Abe no Seimei. But even though he was there, he had a hard time defeating her. After fighting her for days, Abe no Seimei finally found victory. But though he had killed her. He only destroyed her shell and not her spirit."

"As crafty as she was, her spirit came forth to continue the fight with Abe no Seimei. Knowing he could not win a battle of spirit with a being that has almost turned into a god. Abe no Seimei trapped her soul in a stone. He then placed a protective barrier and runes to ward off spirits and demons."

"His plan actually worked. For centuries, all who sought her powers or to release her were never able to find her until now. Another vile fox has grown in power and seeks to release her. And this isn’t just any vile fox but the strongest one the world has ever seen. So you can see why they haven’t taken a liking to you. Apart from that, you use demonic techniques. So, about the demonic techniques. How did you get them?" the burly-haired demigod spoke.

He turned to look at Dan, his finger now pointed at Dan. It pointed straight to Dan’s heart.

"Give me an answer I don’t like, and you won’t get a chance at the afterlife," he said.

After that, he chanted some words, and his finger began to glow. On his fingertips, a kind of fiery golden arrow was formed.

Dan looked at the tent and the places with which he could escape. The burly demi-god had forgotten to guard the door.

Why would they forget to guard the door? They all see me as a threat and would want to kill me the first chance they get unless he believes in his speed to reach the door in time and stop me. Which I really doubt is possible. Based on his physique, I think he’s trained his body to amass power rather than speed. So he won’t be as fast as I am

"I am waiting for your answer," he spoke

The burly demi-god looked at Dan with so much intent, and Dan noticed.

One wrong move, and I am dead. He is going to kill me.

"I stumbled on it by mistake."

After Dan had spoken, the place was quiet for a bit. Then the other demi-gods walked back in.

Dan could feel his heart squeeze.

If I had tried something foolish, I would have....

Dan swallowed hard as he thought of the possibility. Beads of sweat rolled down his forehead.

"You potentially passed the test," the burly demi-god said.

He turned away from Dan as he met the other demi-gods.

"But that doesn’t mean we have taken our eyes off you. You will still be watched, and any wrong moves and I am not sure I’ll be able to shield you from their blades or... mine either."

"You can leave now and meet Nate. He will show you around the camp and he will help you settle in.

Dan stood up to leave the tent, and as he got out, he was met with the gaze of the young boy.

A kind of rage began fueling Dan’s heart as he saw the young lad. Dan walked past him without uttering a word.

Probably it was a mistake saving him?

He headed somewhere; where he was headed, he had no idea. All he knew was that he needed to get away from there. Within the last twenty-four hours that he had met him, he had almost died twice. If he stayed any longer, he might actually die.

Wait?" the young boy called out but Dan just kept ignoring as he walked toward the edge of the camp.

He saw two guards at the way out of the camp. Based on how they look and the energy being emitted, they couldn’t stop him if he wanted to pass.

I just need to get past them, and I am out of here.

As he got closer, he noticed that they barred his way and didn’t allow him out.

I just want to go out for a stroll, Dan spoke.

But they paid him no heed, nor did they even flinch at his words.

"They have been told not to allow you out of the camp"

"Keep me locked in? What do I look like? their dog that they can chain me?"

Dan’s divine energy started running wild.

What did I ever do wrong?

"SOUL REAPER, HEED MY CALL!"

Immediately, the shadows of the camp got deeper. From his shadow, Soul Reaper rose. Dan grabbed it.

"Anyone who stands in my way, I’ll cut them down."

Dan had spoken and was waiting for the first person to attack. But they seemed to not really pay him much attention.

"I took you to be a handsome one but never knew you were dumb too," a voice came from behind him.

As he turned to see the demi-god who wielded two axes approach.

"Stand down," she spoke to the guards at the gate, and they did just that...

"You two, follow me."

Hearing her words, he placed Soul Reaper into his shadow.

He started following her. And then she stopped.

"That includes you too, Nate."

They had walked a bit out of the camp when she suddenly turned to look at the two fellows behind her.

"Thank you for helping me back there." 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

"Helping you?" she smirked

"I wasn’t helping you... we are going on a journey." Her demeanor immediately turned cold.
