Chapter 162: A Great Addition

"Phew... that’s good enough for today, I guess..."

While waiting for Vyse’s classes to end, Hal had trained his body for an hour to pass the time, then followed the workout with two E-ranked missions in the nearby mountains, just fifteen minutes from Aeloria by motorcycle, gathering additional materials as he completed his hunts.

It was already three minutes past the fifteenth hour, and Vyse should be on his way to the union chamber by now...

’Time to go back...’

Retrieving his Suzoke Pathblazer IV from the system’s inventory, Hal returned to the academy, reported his second quest completion, and was quite pleased to find a peaceful Union Chamber fifteen minutes before the sixteenth hour.

They had yet to announce those who were accepted as members.

The applicants must wait until they become official members before being granted entry into the chamber.

"Oh? You’re late, President," joked Vyse, who was sitting lazily on one of the couches.

"Ah, yeah, sorry about that. I completed a few quests in the nearby mountains to progress my wizard rank a bit," Hal apologized lightly. "Have you completed the point system?"

"Yeah, I have. I’ve already given the point exchange rates to Luddy, the guy who will be responsible for the rewards exchange room," explained the sophomore.

"Great job, thanks. Where’s the list of the applicants and their information?"

Vyse turned to the bald young man named Kero, motioning for him to hand over the documents.

"Thanks," Hal said as he took the thick stack of papers from the subordinate, then shifted his attention to Vyse. "Vyse, come help me check and decide which of these guys we should accept."

The sophomore merely shrugged before standing up and following Hal behind a small partition that served as the president’s and vice president’s office.

For the next two hours, the two diligently read through each applicant’s name, appearance, and information, with Hal occasionally writing the names of the chosen ones on a separate sheet of paper for Peron to use in making a better poster and posting it on the academy’s union boards.

After exactly two hours and fifteen minutes, the two finished their task, but there was a slight problem.

Only fifty applicants made it to Vyse’s standards.

Hal suggested that they just pick a random two, but the deputy insisted they don’t.

It was good that Hal had listened, because when evening came and everyone was already preparing to leave the Union Chamber, some to post the names of those accepted on the academy union boards before returning to their dormitories, someone knocked on the door.

The designer, Peron, was the one closest to the door that time and opened it with furrowed brows, ready to give who he believed to be an impatient applicant a piece of his mind.

It was indeed an applicant.

However, it was a cute, white-haired, tan-skinned young lady, her appearance immediately causing Peron’s anger to vanish.

"Hello, I just got back to the academy and missed the recruitment. C-Can you please make an exception this one time?"

After a momentary appreciation of her beauty, the young man’s eyes widened, managing to regather his wits.

"L-Liora Whitemane!" he exclaimed, instinctively turning to Vyse the next second.

But the sophomore had already noticed.

Vyse moved over with a smile, locking eyes with Liora.

"Hoh, if it isn’t my capable junior," the deputy began. "Great run on the Arcana Primis Cup. But even so, I’m afraid that due process is due process, and missing the recruitment... pfft..."

Vyse continued observing the young lady’s reactions as he was "rejecting" her plea, finally failing to hold in his laughter as he watched her mood gradually decline all the way to the ’extremely dejected’ tier.

"Puhaha! Sorry, sorry, alright? I’m just messing with you. We’d be absolute idiots to reject such a renowned student in the academy. Welcome to Chaosbringers Coven, Liora Whitemane. In fact, we can even let you enter a day before the other applicants as a show of our goodwill."

Vyse playfully bowed with grace, positioning himself in front of Peron and extending his arms like a butler holding the entrance open and urging his lady to enter.

Liora’s mood shift from sad to beamingly delighted made the hearts of the other subordinates race.

It was hard not to fall for such a pure and adorable lady.

Unfortunately, their romantic dreams lasted only a moment before shattering when Hal, the union president, appeared and drew Liora’s attention away.

Her gaze and happiness upon seeing him were so telling that the subordinates instinctively knew they had no chance with her.

They could only drop the matter and ended up dejected themselves.

"Liora!" Hal called out with a wide smile. "Good to see you again. How have you been? You just disappeared after your loss, so I thought you might’ve been a bit down or something. But it looks like you’re doing fine."

"Ahh, thanks for worrying about me. I wasn’t dejected when I lost or anything. I just couldn’t wait to take my parents out of the village, so I left as soon as my tournament run was over. I’m not sure how things are in your village, but a beast horde was already forming when I left for the academy, so I had to get them out before the attack happened. I’ve also managed to treat my little brother already. Thank you for everything over the past few months."

Hal’s gaze softened as Liora offered him a sincere bow.

Although he didn’t know what it felt like to leave behind a dying little brother, he could empathize with the dangers of living in a border village.

After all, he himself had evacuated and helped rebuild their little shack three times in his life.

He had never seen the beasts’ attacks firsthand, but he always returned to a devastated Poporo, so he understood what it felt like to leave a loved one in a dangerous place while living a comfortable life in the city.

He was happy for Liora.

The moment she raised her head, however, tears were forming in the corners of her eyes, causing Hal’s heart to skip a beat.

He got the sudden urge to hug her, but knew it was inappropriate.

He could only change the topic:

"N-No worries. A-Anyway, you’re here to join, right? Come on in, let’s process your registration."
