Chapter 58: BEFORE THE FIRST BLOW

Chapter 58 — "BEFORE THE FIRST BLOW"

The waiting hall felt smaller than it should have.

Not because of its size—it was vast, reinforced by layered spirit alloys and ancient formations—but because of the pressure pressing inward from every direction.

Outside these walls, Titan Shell Arena was awake.

No—hungry.

The low thunder of tens of thousands of voices rolled through stone and metal alike, vibrating in Long Hao’s chest like distant drums of war. Spirit arrays hummed as barriers synchronized. Announcers tested amplification glyphs, their voices echoing and overlapping in fragments.

Inside the hall, Azure Dragon Academy’s ten stood in a loose formation.

No one spoke.

This silence was different from the one they’d known on Blackfang Desolation.

There, silence meant danger lurking unseen.

Here, silence meant anticipation.

Instructor Mei Ying stood before them, posture straight, expression calm. But those who had trained under her long enough knew—this was the calm of someone holding a storm on a leash.

A three-dimensional tactical map hovered beside her, slowly rotating. The terrain of Titan Shell Arena was projected in clean, neutral lines: raised platforms, zone boundaries, suppression pillars, environmental hazards.

"Look carefully," Mei Ying said, her voice cutting through the tension without effort.

"This arena is designed to punish mistakes."

Her fingers moved, zooming in on several sections of the map.

"Open zones reward mobility. Choke points reward control. Elevated platforms reward awareness."

She turned her gaze to the team.

"Stage Two is not about brute force. It is about how fast you adapt when your plan collapses."

Ling Yifan’s eyes followed every movement of the projection. His posture was relaxed, but his grip on his spear was firm.

"Ling Yifan," Mei Ying said.

"Yes, Instructor."

"You lead."

No hesitation.

"You control tempo," she continued. "If we advance, it’s because you say so. If we retreat, it’s because you say so. You are not here to prove anything."

Her eyes sharpened.

"You are here to win."

Ling Yifan nodded once.

"I won’t chase glory."

Mei Ying’s gaze shifted.

"Chen Wulian."

Chen straightened instinctively, grin flickering onto his face.

"Yes, Instructor?"

"You are the anchor," she said bluntly. "When Ling moves forward, you stabilize. When formations break, you close the gap."

Chen scratched the back of his neck.

"So... I get punched?"

"Yes."

"...A lot?"

"Yes."

"...Honored."

A few quiet exhales of amusement rippled through the team. Mei Ying allowed it—for half a second.

"Bai Qianlan," she continued.

Bai stepped forward slightly.

"You are vision control. Illusions, sensory disruption, battlefield misdirection. If they can’t read us, they can’t counter us."

Bai nodded calmly.

"They won’t see clearly."

"Ouyang Xue’er."

Ouyang met her gaze.

"Your frost is not for domination," Mei Ying said. "It is for denial. You freeze space, not enemies. You decide where they cannot stand."

Ouyang inhaled slowly.

"I’ll keep it contained."

"Jin Roulan. Zhao Lanyue."

Both responded immediately.

"You guard the rear," Mei Ying said. "Medical response, formation integrity. If someone falls, you pull them back. No exceptions."

"Yes, Instructor."

"Han Duwei. Qin Shuo. Wang Junxie."

The three men straightened.

"You rotate pressure," Mei Ying continued. "Harassment, disruption, breaking enemy rhythm. You do not commit unless Ling gives the call."

Han Duwei cracked his knuckles, eager.

"Understood."

Qin Shuo nodded, eyes serious.

Wang Junxie adjusted his glasses.

"We’ll keep the field unstable."

Finally—

Mei Ying’s gaze settled on Long Hao.

It lingered.

"Long Hao," she said.

He looked up.

"You are the variable."

She stepped closer.

"You do not push forward unless necessary. You do not reveal more than needed. You respond to collapse."

Her voice dropped slightly.

"When plans fail, you are the one who keeps this team breathing."

Long Hao nodded once.

"I understand."

Mei Ying straightened.

"One more thing."

The projection shifted.

A new figure appeared.

Tall. Broad-shouldered. White hair tied loosely behind his back.

Cold mist bled from his silhouette.

FROSTCLOUD IMPERIAL ACADEMY —

TEAM CAPTAIN NAME: XUAN BEIYUN

TALENT: MYSTIC-TIER (HIGH)

ATTRIBUTE: ICE — DOMAIN COMMAND

"This man is not an average opponent," Mei Ying said clearly.

Murong Yuer, standing among Frostcloud’s lineup on the opposite side of the hall, understood the weight of that distinction.

"He is from the Northern Battle Camps," Mei Ying continued. "A domain controller."

Ling Yifan’s eyes narrowed.

"Wide-range?"

"Yes," Mei Ying confirmed. "He does not duel. He suffocates."

Her finger traced a slow circle on the projection.

"He will attempt to seize space early. If he succeeds, the fight becomes his."

Chen cracked his neck.

"...Annoying type."

Mei Ying looked at him.

"Lethal type," she corrected.

The signal bell echoed through the hall.

Ten minutes.

The team dispersed to final checks.

Long Hao stepped slightly aside, crouching to tie the laces of his combat boot.

Just a second.

Just—

Pain exploded at his ankle.

Sharp. Immediate. Invasive.

His body reacted instinctively, muscles tensing—but the warning came half a beat too late.

[WARNING — TOXIN DETECTED.]

The Eclipse System’s voice cut through his mind, cold and urgent.

[NEURO-PARALYTIC COMPOUND. FAST ACTING.]

Long Hao’s pupils shrank.

He looked down.

A thin wooden prick lay snapped against the stone floor, its tip dark with viscous residue.

Poison.

His calf stiffened.

Cold crawled upward like ice water injected into his veins.

And smiled, for some reason.

[Estimated paralysis: 6 seconds.]

"System, I mean Longyu" Long Hao said calmly, even as his muscles began to resist him. "Scan for the attacker."

[SCANNING—]

A pause.

[Target lost. Aura masked. Exit route erased.]

Long Hao exhaled slowly.

So it was deliberate.

Not sloppy.

Someone had planned this.

Longyu’s presence surged inside him.

"LONG HAO—STOP—"

"Too late," Long Hao replied internally. "I’ll handle it."

He straightened slowly.

Shadow did not erupt outward.

It folded inward.

Compressed.

Controlled.

His heartbeat changed.

Not faster.

Heavier.

Each pulse slammed blood through his veins with deliberate force, overriding the poison’s spread.

Shadow wrapped the toxin like a vice.

Crushed it.

Consumed it.

Pain flared—then vanished.

[STATUS UPDATE: TOXIN NEUTRALIZED.]

[ANOMALY DETECTED.]

Longyu went silent.

Then—

"...You bypassed a system restriction."

Long Hao flexed his ankle.

"Correction," he replied calmly. "I used my body."

"...That should not be possible at your unsealing level."

Long Hao’s lips curved faintly.

"Then maybe the system doesn’t know everything yet."

Longyu said nothing.

"Looks like the SHADOW KING has become too much passive."

Long Hao smiled again.

"I think it’s time to introduce the endless shadows to this world."

The gate rumbled.

Stone groaned.

The roar of Titan Shell Arena crashed inward like a tidal wave.

Long Hao stepped forward.

Steady.

Unmarked.

Unnoticed.

ENTERING THE ARENA

"NEXT MATCH—!" 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

The announcer’s voice thundered across the arena.

"AZURE DRAGON ACADEMY—!"

Cheers erupted, shaking the stands.

"And their opponents—FROSTCLOUD IMPERIAL ACADEMY!"

The opposing gate opened.

Cold mist spilled onto the arena floor.

Xuan Beiyun stepped forward first.

His gaze was calm.

Measured.

He raised one hand.

Ice spread slowly across the ground—not rushing, not violent.

Claiming space.

Murong Yuer followed behind him, expression composed.

She did not look at Long Hao.

She did not need to.

Ling Yifan lowered his spear.

"Positions," he said quietly.

Azure Dragon moved as one.

Somewhere in the stands—

The one who planted the poison watched.

Waiting.

The first blow had not yet been struck.

But the battle had already begun.
