Chapter 649

Anton did not know if he wanted to believe what the young man named Kirk had said regarding the boatswain and what supposedly happened to his friend, but he knew that circumstances like these did happen a lot.

“We do know that probably nothing will happen to you since you look like a young, rich master, but why gamble with your life when you can use it to treat us?” The one called Abdul said. Then the young man laughed.

“Do I really look like a pampered young master?” Anton said, and the four young men laughed at his depressed tone.

“You do look like one, but it’s something to be celebrated. Anyone here would exchange their situation with you in a heartbeat,” the other guy, called Mesono, said.

Their food then came, and for the next several minutes, they all busied themselves eating. All of them, including Anton, looked like starving animals while devouring the food that kept coming. Anton knew that his appetite had grown because of the others’ extreme enthusiasm in making sure that not a single tiny bit of food was left on the table.

After around thirty minutes of nonstop eating, the five young men decided to stop the waiter from bringing in more food, and would only continue to do so after an hour. That meant that everyone planned to stay and continue eating, and Anton was fine with that. He knew that the young men were milking him for all his worth, but then again, it was only food, and he liked eating with them.

While they were all resting their stomach, Anton proceeded to ask more questions.

“If I looked like a rich, pampered young man, basically looking defenseless, why did no one try to take advantage of me?”

“New Drennor is not a lawless kingdom! You probably walked using the main streets, and it's morning. If you try to do the same thing during the night, then someone will surely accost you. Besides, you walked and stood full of confidence, as if no one would dare touch you. That meant that you’re capable of defending yourself, or you’re one of those we’ve heard about in stories. Like a prince in disguise protected by someone powerful hidden in the shadows,” Omar said.

The four young men’s eyes glowed. Anton assumed that their imagination was working overtime.

Anton decided to be truthful since there was no sense in hiding his power.

“I’m not a prince in disguise, and no one is protecting me from the shadows. I’m one of the youngest Supreme Wizards from Ormunda. I’m only eighteen years old, but my family and I escaped from the Undead Coalition in Rendindura and traveled here to the Gale Continent. I’m currently among the many wizards fighting the undead in the Western Gate of the kingdom. I decided to take a vacation for some time.”

At first, Anton thought the four young men would suddenly become fearful or extremely respectful, but Kirk and Mesono became extremely excited instead. Omar turned fearful, which was the expression Anton had expected in all of them, and Abdul just looked disbelieving.

“Can you teach me magic?! Or at least test me if I’m capable of learning magic? The test in one of the magic schools here is very expensive, and even after saving for five years, I still only managed to save half of the fee,” Kirk asked, and Mesono was nodding vigorously, which meant that he had the same desire as his friend.

If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

Abdul and Omar remained subdued.

“Why would I do that for you?”

“Oh, come on, please? Since you’re on vacation, we’ll do our best to make sure you experience the best thing New Drennor could offer!” Kirk said, his voice trembling with enthusiasm.

Anton shrugged and retrieved the magic rank detection stone that he had purchased before from his inventory. He then gave the stone to Kirk and instructed the young man to hold it for a few minutes.

Kirk held the stone for a couple of minutes, and then it glowed. Anton then told Kirk to pass the stone to his friends, so they could also hold the stone. After a while, Anton retrieved the magic rank detection stone and stored it.

“All of you have the talent to become mages. All of your talents are the same, which is average,” Anton simply said.

Kirk shouted excitedly while Mesono burst into tears. Omar still looked fearful, and Abdul still looked disbelieving.

“Are you really a wizard?” Abdul asked.

Anton simply summoned a Fire Ball on top of his hands and, after a few seconds, dismissed it.

“Now, regarding the charge for me testing all of you, it’ll be a hundred gold coins each,” Anton said.

The four young men then gaped at Anton. He could not help himself anymore and suddenly burst out laughing.

“You should have seen your faces!”

“It’s not funny, Anton! For a moment, I thought that if we don’t pay you, you’ll burn all of us,” Kirk said, his voice trembling, and Anton could see that all four men were sweating.

“Sorry for scaring you. Let’s celebrate and continue eating!” Anton said.

One of them called the waiter back, and Anton asked him to bring food to them again. Soon, the waiter returned with food, and they all started eating again. Anton was surprised when he heard Kirk tell the waiter to switch the alcohol to fruit juice, and based on his friends’ expressions, they all agreed with him.

When Mesono saw Anton’s expression, the young man told Anton that they should not become drunk today. After a couple of hours of nonstop eating, they finally rested again.

“Why were you loitering in the harbor anyway?” Anton asked.

“It’s our day off in our jobs since it’s a Sunday. We went here, hoping to get part-time jobs as porters, then we saw you,” Kirk said.

“How do you know each other?” Anton asked.

“We live close to each other and we’ve been friends since we were children,” Abdul replied.

“What are your jobs?”

“I help around in one of the sleazier taverns here,” Mesono said.

“I help around in a cobbler workshop,” Kirk said.

The other two said that they help around on a fishing boat. Kirk then clarified that they did not have enough coins to become apprentices, so they were just basically servants. Part-time servants at that, so they earn very little coins, and most of those earnings went to their families to feed their siblings.

“Are you all planning to become wizards? It would be extremely difficult for you all based on your situation, unless you find a patron or something. I’m guessing that enrolling in one of the magic schools is out for all of you, since when I enrolled my sister, I had to pay an enormous amount of wealth, and she’s one of the most talented wizards that school where we enrolled her had encountered. If you plan to continue working while studying as a wizard, it will also be very difficult since to be a wizard, you will need a lot of time memorizing spells, and you will not be able to do that while working,” Anton said.

The four young men became subdued, thinking about their situation. In the meantime, Anton suddenly thought of the fact that their house did not have wizards. He thought, what if he became their patron and, in return, they would be loyal to their family? That would mean that once they became powerful, their house would have four wizards. With his resources, it was easy enough to groom these four young men to become powerful wizards.

Right now, the Rose Manor was only protected by the guards they hired, but if Anton managed to earn these young men's loyalties, they would be part of the family, and the manor would have four wizards to protect it.
