Chapter 103: Doubt

Investigator Lee took a deep breath. He had been an investigator for a long time, but interrogating and getting information from the rich kids was too hard to handle. He felt exhausted by just asking some questions.

They couldn’t answer him with a straight yes or a no. He told Lucas that the twins were lying to see his reaction. He couldn’t really tell if they were telling the truth because there wasn’t any proof. But he didn’t expect to get some complicated response from Lucas.

Lucas cleared his throat. "The night before the murder, we did stay at home and had a movie. We wanted to have some snacks and coffee from a newly opened cafe and had a game to who would go out Primrose. I lost the game, but Brie decided to come along. We still have the receipt and I think the cafe has cameras to support our statements."

"And the morning after, you and Brie decided to go to the same cafe again?" Investigator Lee frowned.

Lucas chuckled. "What’s wrong with that? We love the coffee and their donuts so we decided to buy more. In fact, we had a delivery this morning from the same cafe. Would you like to try the donuts?"

Investigator Lee was still in doubt. There were evidence that could support the kids’ claims, but he couldn’t fully believe them.

"Next time, Mr.Wilson." The old man smiled. "About your sister, I heard she’s sick and the Crown Prince is taking care of her. Is there a chance that we could talk to them?"

"I apologize. I don’t think this is the right time for that. My sister was not aware of Benjamin’s death. She’s still recovering so we decided not to tell her about it. Caden is exhausted from taking care of my sister so we are letting him take a rest. He didn’t know you’re here." Lucas answered.

Investigator Lee sighed deeply. He couldn’t force Lucas to let them talk to Caden and Alira so he didn’t insist.

"You are allowed to stay and check all the rooms. You have the Wilson Group’s permission." Lucas continued.

Investigator Bryan came running toward them. He came from the third floor of the mansion where Elijah, Natalia and Elisa’s room was.

"Sir, I think you should see this."

Lucas had a frown on his face when Investigator Lee glanced at him. They stood up and went to the third floor.

They entered Elijah’s room which was surrounded by Mireya’s portrait.

"Who’s this girl?" Investigator Lee asked.

"He said she’s the Crown Prince’s sister." Bryan said.

Investigator Lee looked at Bryan. "Sister? But Caroline Hulls is blonde. This girl has brown hair."

"It’s the dead sister." Bryan answered.

The old man was baffled when he turned to Lucas. He was asking for an explanation from the heir of Wilson Group.

"Mireya Jade Richards. She died during the attack in Flousia twelve years ago." Lucas responded.

The investigators had scowl faces. They still couldn’t understand Lucas’ answer. The latter took a deep breath to continue.

"Aunt Margaret, Caden’s mother, was pregnant when the attack happened. She was stabbed in the stomach that killed her unborn child. Caden asked someone to make a portrait of Mireya in her teenage year. Elijah became obsessed with Mireya and started making images of her."

Lucas didn’t mention that Elijah could see Mireya’s ghost because he knew they would not believe it. Even him couldn’t accept the fact that Elijah could see and talk to the girl, but the portraits in his room were proof that he wasn’t crazy.

"Can we take some photos of his room?" Investigator Lee asked.

Lucas nodded. "Go ahead."

Elijah rushed into his bedroom and saw Investigator Bryan and Keisha taking pictures of his drawings.

"What the hell is going on here? Lucas, I thought they will just ask questions!" Elijah yelled.

Lucas raised his hand to stop Investigator Lee from responding to Elijah.

"Elijah, they’re just taking pictures. They’re not touching them so don’t worry."

Lucas knew that Elijah has a short temper. If he let Investigator Lee answer Elijah’s rant, it would result into something bad.

"Prince Elijah, you’re good at this. Do you love drawing people?" Investigator Bryan asked.

"No. My only interest is Mireya."

"Can we ask what you did the night before the 26th of June?"

"In my room, drawing."

"You didn’t watch a movie with the others?"

Elijah shook his head. "I would rather stay in my room and sleep than watch a boring horror movie."

"How about your sister Elisa?"

"She wanted to take care of Caden and Alira so I think she stayed with them the whole night."

"Do you know Benjamin Miller?"

"Of course! He’s the royal family’s enemy. Our parents kept us guarded because of him."

"Do you have a grudge on him?"

Elijah laughed. "I think a lot of people hates him. And that includes me. He killed Mireya. So yes, that’s my grudge."

"And you want him dead?"

"It’s not just me. The people was enraged because of what he did. If you’re just going to base your accusations on how deep is someone’s grudge toward him, I don’t think I am not the person you are looking for."

The investigators glanced at each other. They all thought that Elijah would give them something, but they were wrong.

The prince of Flousia was a bit weird, but what he said was true. A person could kill someone even without a grudge.

After talking to Elisa and Natalia, they left Queens without any relevant information that could like one the kids to Benjamin’s death.

"Sir, we didn’t get the chance to talk to Caroline, the Crown Prince sister." Investigator Keisha mentioned.

"And what’s the reason? We need a statement from all of them."

"Well, she’s stubborn and didn’t want to talk to us. We assumed she’ll just tell us the same thing like the others so we let her be."

Investigator Lee sighed deeply and massaged his temple. Although Lucas and his friends had the same statement, he wasn’t completely convinced that they were all innocent.

When they arrived at the police station, they went directly to the meeting room and laid all the information they got from Queens.

"Do you think they are all innocent?" Investigator Lee asked.

"What do you mean, sir?" Investigator Josh frowned.

"Those kids met each other just recently. According to the students of Golden Oak, they rarely see them together." Investigator Lee started while staring at the photos of Caden and his friends.

The three younger investigators frowned and glanced at each other. They couldn’t understand their boss’ point.

"Is there something we missed?" Bryan asked.

"The night before the 26th, at least five of them said that they stayed at home to watch a movie. Elijah Hulls locked himself in his room while the sister, Elisa, helped the Crown Prince take care of Alira Wilson. At around nine in the evening, Lucas Wilson and Aubrey went out to buy snacks. They returned home at around ten. Then they took a photo and two girls posted it on their social media accounts." Investigator Lee continued.

The three were just listening carefully to the old man who was scratching his chin while looking at the files on the table.

"Check their social media accounts and that’s the only photo of them together."

Investigator Keisha quickly searched Aubrey Cross and Natalia Parker on her laptop to see their Instagram accounts.

"Natalia Parker never posted a photo of her with the others. Her accounts are full of hate toward them. The only thing that matters to her is her fiance, Prince Elijah."

Lady Natalia’s Instagram was indeed full of posts about the royal family and her new acquaintances. But it didn’t seem like she love them.

"Do you think she will change her heart overnight?" Investigator Lee asked the three.

"But she looked happy in the photo. Do you think this is fake? I’m sorry sir, I still can’t understand your point." Josh commented.

Investigator Lee turned to Keisha and Bryan. "What about you? Any idea?"

Keisha stared at the old man, took a deep breath before voicing out her opinion.

"I think either the photo was edited or her account was hacked."

The old man smiled. "Or maybe both. Remember, Aubrey Cross is a genius hacker. But it’s not her only talent." He then took one document from the table and handed it to his associates.

It was newspaper dated a year ago. Josh read it and in the front page was Aubrey Tiffany Cross.

"She bagged the grand prize in an international photography contest last year. The competition became popular because the contestants will be judged by their editing skills."

"Like making a simple photo into something else?" Keisha asked.

Investigator Lee nodded. "Or bringing the people in the photo into a place they’ve never been too."

"Are you saying that Aubrey Cross might have edited the photo and hacked Natalia Parker’s account to post it? But how about Natalia? She was too calm when we talk to her about it." Bryan frowned.

Josh chuckled when he finally get Investigator Lee’s point.

"What if she was threatened?" He smirked.
