Chapter 369: Day One: Lost Magic

If you want it sharper and more in-the-moment, like combat choreography, it should feel immediate:

On Katherine’s side, the winged hybrid staggered, struggling to regain its footing from the multiple slash wounds carved across its body.

Then, without warning, Qasag swooped in from above.

The dragon circled in and unleashed a concentrated beam of blue fire that cascaded downward, washing over the hybrid in a blazing torrent.

The winged hybrid’s skin wasn’t built with the sort of armored defense of the sabertooth, and due to its inability to fly, the flames burned through it until it was ejected from the field.

Katherine and Elena walked toward each other, with smiles on their faces. They raised their palms and slammed them together.

Their choice to swap opponents had been flawless.

Although if they both chose to fight their initial opponents to their fullest, they probably would have won. However, they had to consider the fact that mana capacity and stamina wasn’t infinite and the battle of the day had only just begun.

By switching, they did the smart thing of placing their opponents against worse matchups, just like they themselves were badly matched earlier.

And this became a better method to win and conserve mana.

Piers and Oliver watching from the fortress, were overjoyed with both women grabbing their wins.

——

On another part of the battlefield...

The former host of the Dragon King System, Syra, and Captain Finn of The Black Lions guild of Xathia had just been met by two other opponents standing in their way.

One of them had the qualities of a fish, with gills at the side of his neck. The other had a slimy body and most of his skin looked like it had turned into gel.

They both had blue robes, signifying that they were champions of the Mirean continent.

"May I kindly ask you both to surrender?" Syra asked in a nice tone.

Her opponents glanced at each other.

Even Finn, taken aback, glanced at her and asked "why are you pleading with the enemy?"

Then he took his stance as purple magic circles appeared around his arms with dark energy from his darkness magic surging around him.

He added, "This is war."

The champions of Mirean then took their stances as well

"I see. You won’t come to a surrender, then?" Syra then lifted her hand forward, and the sheer magic power that gathered around her frightened even Captain Finn, who lost his stance and took a few steps back.

Her opponents gained frantic looks at once and began taking steps back as well, but it was too late.

"Ars Nova."

She whispered, and right then, an explosion of blue light erupted amidst the Mirean foes and spread in such a terrifying range that when it finally cleared, there was no sight of them. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

The explosion had been powerful enough to kill them, which in the case of this dimension was a knockout and instant elimination.

The ground they had stood on had cratered over several hundred meters. The landscape of that area had been reshaped entirely.

"Hm..." Syra muttered, staring blankly at the explosion’s aftermath and the deep fissures it left.

Finn, in shock, couldn’t help but ask, "What type of spell was that? Was that supplementary?"

Syra tilted her head toward him and smiled. Then she said, "It’s Lost Magic. Mages of this era do not know much, I’m afraid."

She shook her head in amusement and continued on her way.

Finn stared at her in terror. Given his level as captain, he could tell the strength of a spell by the amount of mana poured into its execution.

And right then, when Syra used that spell, it felt like it would take the entire mana reserve of at least every Xathian captain to cast that spell even once.

Yet she had done it so casually and was not facing a single sign of exhaustion.

——

At the Citadel where the gods, the Dragon King, and his family watched...

"You guys let Syra compete?" Aiden said with an amused smile on his face as he shook his head.

Thera, who was beside him, scratched the back of her head. After seeing that, even she acknowledged that Syra’s power level may have been too much.

"Shall I bring this up with the All-Father?" she asked.

Aiden shook his head and waved his hand. "Let it be. She’ll force them to break their limits."

Thera nodded.

——

On a different part of the battlefield, not everyone on Valaross’s side was having it good.

Talen was currently hovering mid-air as he faced another mage who wore a lighter blue robe, representing the continent Uweron.

Below them, the ground had faced massive destructions from their earlier exchanges. Talen’s partner had already been defeated and ejected from the field. Same as the companion for the Uweron Champion

Now it was just the two of them.

The Uweron mage hovered across from Talen, finally spoke after a moment of silence.

"My name is Dunn," he said. "Of the Kingdom of Lesedor."

Talen studied him for a moment, then nodded. "Talen. Grand Magus of Dragonhold."

Dunn’s lips curved into a smile. His magic was called Esparda De Langza in Lesedor, and It granted him limited over space within a certain area.

"Let’s finish this," Talen said.

Dunn’s smile widened. "Agreed."

And right then, the battle continued.

Dunn manipulated space to warp his positions, causing the effect of teleportation as he appeared directly in front of Talen, with his fist aimed at his face.

The air around his fist quivered unnaturally, and if it connected, it would tear Talen’s features as though bending them into a fold.

In response, Talen changed the trajectory of Dunn’s punch, redirecting it the left and out of any harmful range away from his face.

Almost simultaneously, Talen followed with another attack. He warped space around Dunn, forcing it into a compression that closed in from all sides.

Dunn grunted and pushed outward with both hands. The space around him expanded violently, shattering the compression and sending a shockwave outward.

Talen avoided the shockwave by warping his position with Distortion magic, creating the effect of teleportation and repositioning to another part of the field.

Asides the fact that they both looked equally matched, it also felt like their magic was the same. Although this was due to the fact that both magic had similar applications.
