My Curse? A Different Yandere in Every Reincarnation-Chapter 166: Do you know what it is to be good?
Chapter 166: Do you know what it is to be good?
"..." Beatriz and I are walking through the church corridors, after she woke up I served her breakfast with my milk and she got ready for the day by going to the bathroom and taking care of herself. After her breakfast, we went outside.
She said her current routine is to go to a place to heal people, and I should accompany her. A maid also came to deliver a report, and apparently she already knows what I did with the assassins.
We turn a corner, entering a large area with space for many people. It seems this is where we will work together.
"Shizune, did you have to be so cruel last night?" Beatriz asks, going to the podium and kneeling in front of a large, faceless statue covered by a large cloth like clothes.
"They tried to kill you, they tried to kill me. I offered them the option to surrender. They were people I judged as not good and unwilling to improve," I say honestly, approaching her.
"...Did you find anything out?"
"Only that apparently there are nobles behind your life, and more of them will soon appear," Beatriz doesn’t seem surprised when I inform her.
"Thank you for protecting me," She thanks me, even though it wasn’t necessary, they would have died instantly if they had invaded her room.
"Can you please go and open that door over there? People have entered, your mission is just to observe and ensure that no suspicious people do anything wrong, and I also want you to capture thieves and murderers," Beatriz speaks explanatorily.
As if she was absolutely certain that they would have these problems, she didn’t tell me to be careful, but to do it.
"Understood," I just say that, going to the large door in the farthest area. As soon as I open it, I see the outside full of people, some sick, others injured, among other notable problems.
The crowd quickly enters, practically invading the place and approaching Beatriz. I just wait, observing suspicious people who don’t seem to have anything wrong with them.
But soon everything calms down and adjusts when Beatriz asks for order, and a not very well-adjusted line forms. I watch as Beatriz uses healing magic individually on each one, healing the most injured who are at the beginning of the line.
While she heals and listens to what the people say, I notice who seems suspicious, people who are obviously not injured.
"Where do you think you’re going?" I say, approaching a suspicious person, grabbing his shoulder as I take the dagger he thinks is well hidden.
"T-This is not what it looks like!" Before he can do anything, I freeze the lower part of him, leaving him locked in place as the people step back and look at the commotion.
"I suggest you don’t try to move, for now you’re safe, but if the ice breaks, you’ll lose your legs," I did this as a warning, anyone who sees this will think twice about continuing with their plans.
"Is this enough? He’s alive," I say to Beatriz, who looks at the frightened man.
"Yes, it’s enough," She just says that as I stand by her side. The people approach more cautiously, but still can’t recognize me as a living dead.
We stay there for a few minutes as I freeze the lower part of all suspicious people, pinning them to the ground and leaving them there as a warning.
The saint is very efficient, she listens to what the civilian says, heals them, and then sends them home. I see various types of different diseases and injuries.
It’s a larger number than I expected of people with problems, and it’s obvious that it’s not just the wounds, there’s also obvious malnutrition, horrible basic hygiene, and clothing that indicates the poverty of the environment.
At the entrance, I also see a nun handing out food to everyone who leaves. We spend 3 hours doing this, 28 people pinned to the ground for trying to approach without being injured and with hidden weapons or for trying to steal from others who were nearby.
And even so, the number of people practically didn’t decrease, while the saint’s holy magic has already dropped by half. It seems that healing in a group would spend a lot of power in exchange for not healing completely.
While healing individually is more efficient and reduces costs, at this point the saint is already using the mana that came thanks to my milk, and by the expression it’s obvious that she also knows that without me she would have stopped more than 1 hour ago.
Some paladins also appeared to check the location and took the criminals somewhere, probably for interrogation. I just know there are a lot more people trying to kill her than expected.
"You seem tired, don’t you want a break?" I ask, even seeing the huge number of people still needing assistance.
"No, I can still manage thanks to your potion... it’s been a great help here, normally I would have to deal with the criminals," Beatriz speaks with a soft smile without losing focus on healing a boy with almost 40% of his arm necrotic.
Beatriz’s healing is impressive, no doubt, but the dissatisfaction of the population is noticeable. Desperate people tend to lose their heads and show ingratitude.
Complaints about the delay are appearing more and more, which seems to be forcing Beatriz to try to be faster.
’...’ This reminds me of when I used to complain about the work of others in my first life. I guess the pressure is worse than I imagined.
But if Beatriz wants to continue, all I can do is help her, so I continue to just observe suspicious people while the line seems to never diminish, until finally, after 5 hours, right at lunchtime, Beatriz’s magic completely runs out.
’5 hours, if there was a three-fold increase, she would normally have spent 1 to 2 hours healing others.’ It was a big increase, and she seems exhausted.
"Well done, Beatriz," I say, helping her get up, and she accepts my hand with a smile.
However, the dissatisfaction of the people soon explodes when they see her getting up, which indicates that she is leaving. A confused murmur of various voices barely allows you to understand what they are saying.
"..." I just look at Beatriz, who has a tired but accustomed look, as if this were routine, showing that everyone always demonstrates this ingratitude and complaints.
"If you want, I can make them stop," I murmur to her.
"...?"
"They are committing a common mistake, they think the fact that you heal them is an obligatory benefit for them, but it is a fact that it is not like that, it is just a charitable act that you do out of kindness," She has no obligation to do this.
I may not know exactly how the church works, but it’s obvious that healing all these commoners is not a duty of hers that she is obligated to do.
"It’s not that serious," She just says, ignoring the complaints and starting to walk with tired steps to leave.
"...It’s not that serious, huh..." I repeat what she said.
"Shut up and leave here, all of you," I speak authoritatively, stopping the crowd of voices, even Beatriz looks at me surprised by the authoritative tone.
"Didn’t you understand it’s over? Get out of here and go back to your homes. I’m sure you don’t want to become ice blocks to serve as church decorations, right?" I speak seriously, creating a heavy atmosphere.
"I doubt God would like you to act like a bunch of animals. We are rational beings, not fish that just swim back and forth. Go away grateful at least for having had the chance to see the saint," I speak as some leave in fear.
"..." I start to freeze the room from where I am, the ice slowly advancing, which scares the rest who start running out. Beatriz looks at me incredulously.
"Why did you do that?!" She speaks urgently.
"Why did I do that? It’s simple, because they’re being ungrateful, and people like that only come up with more excuses to complain over time. Aren’t you tired of hearing complaints when you’re just trying to help?"
"It’s not quite like that!" She tries to refute the obvious.
"I’m sure your mother wouldn’t like to see you physically and mentally exhausting yourself for a bunch of ungrateful people who don’t see the value of what you do," I make her stop, talking about a serious matter.
"How dare you mention my mother?" She speaks irritably.
"Did I lie?"
"..."
"Did I say anything untrue? Aren’t you tired? Don’t you find it bad to hear this nonsense of complaints even though you’re doing your best?"
"...Shizune, you said you would try to be a good person. Was that a lie of yours?" She changes the subject.
"Do you know what it means to be a good person, Beatriz?"
"That’s obvious!" She speaks with conviction.
"Really? So what does it mean to be a good person? Is it helping others? Is it exhausting yourself to the maximum to do good, only to receive ingratitude? Is it making donations? Is it healing others? Is that really just being someone good?" I speak, leaving her confused.
"Have you ever thought that being a good person is not necessarily helping many people, but making a difference?" Clearly, helping others is good.
But not always just helping others is really good. Helping others just makes you seem good to others.
"And how do you make a difference then, Shizune?" She speaks irritably.
"By helping you," I say, leaving her frozen.
"If I help you, I’ll be a good person. I don’t need others to see me as good, and I don’t need them to realize that I’m good."
"If I help someone good make a difference in their world, then I’ll already be a good person, even if no one else sees it." Alehandro improved his world because of me.
This is something that no one can deny. He founded a religion to try to improve his world for me. Yui spoke of how much he struggled and how much things improved for many.
No one really attributes the goodness that happens to them to me. The people of that world worship Saint Alehandro, not Saint Shizune. However, it is thanks to me that they are better off.
In other words, I did something good. It may not have been intentional, but I undeniably did something good, and that’s all that matters.
"Y-You..." She hesitates.
"I chose to be your servant to be good, but I don’t care if others think I’m good." No one will notice if I do something good by helping Beatriz. Any good thing will be credited to Beatriz.
But Yui will know that I made the effort for this. She will know that yes, I was the one who helped make things better.
"...I need to think," Beatriz practically runs away.
"Think, but think very well, and if you want, I’ll give you a hug and a shoulder to cry on when you come back," I say what obviously affects her as she quickens her steps to her room.
"..." I stand here thinking about what to do.
