Chapter 93: Come At Me

Far from schoolyards and industrial ruins, a sprawling estate sat behind massive black gates carved with dragon motifs.

Stone pillars towered at the entrance, each wrapped in sculpted serpents. The driveway curved through manicured gardens, past fountains shaped like coiled wyrms spewing arcs of water into ornamental ponds.

The main building resembled a fusion of modern luxury and ancient fortress. It was made of glass, steel, and carved charcoal stone blending into a structure that radiated authority.

This was the headquarters of the Dragon Fang Gang.

And today—

The front courtyard was packed.

A long line of young awakeners stretched down the driveway with some in school uniforms, others in casual clothes. All of them looked nervous and hopeful.

Whispers filled the air.

"I heard they only take fifteen awakened this cycle and only one gets to be her apprentice..."

"Did you see the evaluation arena? It’s insane."

"If Miss Zu Li notices you, you’re basically set for life."

Suddenly, the side doors of a secondary building opened.

Silence rippled down the line as Zu Li stepped out.

Her black and crimson attire with a slit that reached her left thigh, flowed elegantly as she walked. Her presence was sharp yet refined, like a blade hidden within silk.

Behind her followed several high-ranking gang members. Among them was a well-dressed man in a tailored charcoal suit and hands clasped behind his back. West would recognize him if they ever crossed paths again.

The line erupted in hushed gasps.

"It’s Miss Zu Li."

"She looks even better in person."

"Oh my God..."

"She’s terrifyingly beautiful."

Zu Li didn’t acknowledge the gushing.

She walked forward calmly with jer heels clicking against stone in rhythmic successions.

Suddenly, a young man from midway down the line broke formation.

"Miss Zu Li!"

Gasps erupted as he sprinted forward.

Gang members moved instantly to block him, but he ducked past one and slid to a stop a few meters from her.

"Make me your apprentice!" he shouted. "I promise I’m talented enough!"

He puffed out his chest.

"I’ve trained for the past year! I’ve studied dragon resonance theory! I have a very active branch!"

The surrounding gang members moved to shove him back but Zu Li raised a hand.

They stopped as the courtyard went silent.

She tilted her head slightly.

"Show me."

The line collectively gasped.

"That worked?!"

Even the overzealous applicant blinked.

"...Really?"

Zu Li’s expression didn’t change.

"Show me."

The young man’s face hardened as he closed his eyes and activated his branch.

A wave of energy rippled outward as his body began transforming.

His arms thickened with claws extending from fingertips. Scales formed across his shoulders as a draconic tail snapped out behind him. His jaw elongated slightly with fangs protruding upwards.

The crowd murmured in awe.

"Partial dragon morph."

"Not bad..."

The young man roared and inhaled deeply.

Green flames erupted from his mouth in a wide arc, scorching the courtyard’s stone tiles ahead.

The heat forced several people in line to stumble backward in panic.

The flames crackled and spread briefly before dying out.

Smoke lingered.

The applicant panted slightly, looking proud.

Zu Li’s expression remained utterly unchanged.

"...You’ll have to do better than that."

His smile faltered.

He growled and activated another another layer of transformation.

His scales darkened... and his muscles expanded further as he shot forward, swiping his claws in rapid succession at a nearby stone pillar.

Chunks of carved dragon sculpture shattered and fell.

He turned back toward her but still she looked completely unimpressed.

Zu Li blinked once.

"Disappointing. You’re nothing compared to him."

Her words cut deeper than any blade causing his face to flush red in embarrassment. But only Zu Li knew the ’him’ she was referring to.

"Then what would impress you?!" The applicant questioned in desperation.

Zu Li’s gaze sharpened slightly.

"Come at me."

The entire courtyard went still.

"If you can so much as lay a finger on me," she continued calmly, "I will personally make you my apprentice."

The line erupted in shocked murmurs while the young man’s eyes gleamed.

"You’re really powerful, Miss Zu Li... but laying just a finger on you? That’s not mission impossible."

He smirked before charging at her.

Swwhiiiii~

His claws sliced through the air as he dashed forward at full speed.

For a split second— it genuinely looked like he might reach her.

All of a sudden, a sharp crack echoed across the courtyard.

Zu Li’s arm moved so fast it blurred, connecting a heavy slap with the side of his face.

Bam!

The sound was brutal, followed by the sound of clattering teeth.

His body twisted midair as he spiraled violently, smashing through the outer wall of one building...

Bang!

He completely broke through it and then slammed through the inner wall of a second building.

Dust and debris exploded outward and a drawn silence reigned across the surroundings.

A distant groan could be heard from somewhere inside the wreckage.

Zu Li shook her hand once, as if brushing off dust.

"Next."

She voiced with a cold and utterly unmoved tone.

The line collectively stiffened.

"Fuck..."

"That’s what you get for jumping the line..."

"He got folded..."

No one else stepped out.

Zu Li continued walking and her entourage followed immediately.

As they moved toward the main building, she spoke without looking back.

"Report."

The suited man beside her adjusted his glasses slightly.

"We have not located West’s current residence."

Her eyes narrowed faintly.

"But?"

"We confirmed the coordinates of his old neighborhood. Reconstruction underway."

She continued walking.

"And?"

"We have identified his father’s workplace."

She stopped for a moment and her gaze shifted toward him.

"Details."

The man in the suit handed her a tablet.

"Employment records confirmed this morning."

A faint smile touched her lips.

"Good."

Behind her, the broken applicant was being carried away on a stretcher.

Zu Li’s voice remained calm.

"Although he is not a minor... I believe every father has a say in their kid’s life. So long as we are able to convince him that Dragon Fang is the perfect choice for his son... I want him found before the other gangs escalate."

"Yes, Miss Zu Li."
