Chapter 772: Chapter 772: Together for 30 Years

After returning home, Zhang Yuxi looked at herself in the mirror and flashed a grin. "Ah, I’m so pretty."

Zhang Yuxi rarely got drunk. The drunkest she had probably ever been was the day she met Lin Feng. After getting married, she would only get slightly tipsy before falling asleep; she had never been like this.

Lin Feng took off his watch and unhurriedly removed his cufflinks, watching his wife talk nonsense to her reflection in the mirror.

"Honey, I’m not drunk, really! My mind is perfectly clear!" she claimed. "If you don’t believe me, give me a problem to solve. I guarantee I’ll figure it out in minutes."

"Honey, you’re so handsome! I’m so lucky to have you... Hee hee!"

Seeing that Zhang Yuxi was quite drunk, Lin Feng coaxed her as if she were a child. The more he did, the more it went to her head, and she began alternating between crying and laughing. Lin Feng had never seen her like this before. Could it be that Erbao’s wedding today set her off? he wondered.

Finally, having exhausted herself, Zhang Yuxi quieted down and gazed out the window. "Today, at Erbao’s wedding, I couldn’t help but think back to our own," she reflected.

They had married on a resort island abroad. It was the most beautiful moment of her life, one she could never forget.

"Before we knew it, we’ve been together for almost thirty years..."

Lin Feng tidied up the room, carefully putting away the jewelry she had worn that day. As he listened, the room suddenly grew silent. He turned his head to look and found she had fallen asleep without him noticing.

Lin Feng let out a sigh that was half amusement, half something more complicated. When it came to their children, he was always the more emotional one. When the kids were two months old, it was Lin Feng who carried them around day in and day out, as Zhang Yuxi had gone back to work after weaning them. From that point on, Lin Feng played the role of both father and mother at home.

Today, watching Erbao get married, he had maintained his masculine pride and hadn’t cried. But it would be a lie to say his heart wasn’t aching. Erbao is so adorable, so dutiful, and so charming. From now on, she’ll be someone else’s daughter... The thought was enough to make him melancholic.

Because Zhang Yuxi was drunk and needed looking after, Lin Feng remained unaware of the festivities outside, sitting peacefully on the sofa and enjoying the afternoon sun.

Amidst a lively entourage, Erbao and Qin Jiang returned to their new bridal suite. After some boisterous fun, the guests paired off to hang out, with the evening banquet being the final event.

After some time had passed, Zhang Yuxi woke with a buzzing in her head. "What time is it?"

Lin Feng glanced at his watch. "Five-thirty."

Zhang Yuxi sat quietly for a moment to collect herself. "Honey, what time is the banquet again?" she asked softly.

"Six o’clock," Lin Feng replied.

Zhang Yuxi was taken aback and scrambled to get ready. "Six? We’re going to be late! Let’s hurry!" She mumbled a complaint at Lin Feng for not waking her, despite being ready to go herself.

Lin Feng was speechless. "I would have, but I couldn’t wake you up." He even thoughtfully showed her a video he’d taken. Not only was she sound asleep, she was even snoring.

Thoroughly embarrassed, Zhang Yuxi fell silent. Alright, it wasn’t her husband’s fault; she only had herself to blame for drinking too much.

The couple hurried to the hotel, where most of the guests had already arrived. Seeing them arrive late, everyone just smiled, as they all knew Zhang Yuxi had gotten drunk. This evening’s banquet was a lively, intimate affair. Not many people were invited, but those who remained were all close family and friends.

Erbao was exquisitely dressed, and she and Qin Jiang made a stunning couple. The banquet was a joyous meal, especially for the younger crowd. Their games of Truth or Dare kept the parents and other relatives watching on in amusement.

After the banquet ended, the kids, feeling they hadn’t had enough fun, went out for karaoke and a late-night snack.

Everyone sighed in unison, "It’s great to be young!"

The young people had their ways of having fun, and Lin Feng’s middle-aged cohort had their own evening activities as well. It wasn’t until eleven o’clock that everyone finally parted ways and returned to their hotel rooms. Lin Feng called Dabao, urging him to take good care of Xiaobao.

At the banquet, Zhang Yuxi had stuck to juice, so she was perfectly clear-headed as she walked back hand-in-hand with her husband.

"Today was so much fun! I feel ten years younger." She swung his arm like a child while humming a song, "I’m a girl, a happy girl..."

「The next day,」 the couple visited Erbao and Qin Jiang’s marital home.

It was a new, hundred-square-meter apartment gifted by Qin Jiang’s parents, decorated entirely according to Erbao’s preferences. She had overseen the renovations bit by bit during her trips between the two cities.

"It’s beautiful!" Zhang Yuxi was very pleased with the decor. Though it was just over a hundred square meters, the design made clever use of the space. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

"Where’s Erbao?"

"They were out too late last night. They’re still sleeping!"

Zhang Yuxi quickly waved her hands. "Then let’s go. We shouldn’t disturb them."

They stayed in Jingcheng for three days. If it weren’t for Xiaobao needing to return to school, they would have loved to stay a few days longer.

「Back in Yangcheng,」 the excitement seemed to settle back into a peaceful routine, and life returned to normal.

But today at the dinner table, Zhang Yuxi remarked, "Erbao hasn’t come back for so long, and she hasn’t even called..."

She trailed off as they all remembered that Erbao was married now. She had shifted the focus of her life and work to Jingcheng and would rarely be coming back.

Zhou Cuilan smiled at Xiaobao. "Xiaobao, you need to work hard and get into a university in Jingcheng so we can all move there sooner."

Xiaobao looked helpless. "But I’m only in fourth grade. That’s still a long time away."

Zhou Cuilan encouraged her, "That’s no problem! You can skip grades. As long as you work hard enough, nothing is impossible." She then launched into stories about how exceptional her older brother and sister were, claiming that if Lin Feng hadn’t held them back, there was no telling how many grades they might have skipped.

"I just wanted them to complete their schooling properly," Lin Feng recalled, admitting he did have his own reasons at the time. "Xiaobao, if you decide you want to skip grades, I promise I won’t stand in your way."

"And Mom won’t either!" Zhang Yuxi quickly added.

Her grandparents also cheered for Xiaobao, who felt the weight on her shoulders grow even heavier.

In truth, getting Xiaobao into a school in Jingcheng wouldn’t be difficult. The issue was that their home and the elders were here. Now in their fifties, they didn’t want to move too far away.

Xiaobao put down her chopsticks. "Okay. Starting today, I’m going to study hard."

The family applauded supportively.

In terms of academic talent, Xiaobao was nowhere near her older brother and sister, but all the children shared the same excellent character. It’s often said that all remarkable people are alike in their excellence, while those who fall short do so in a myriad of different ways. Everyone believed that as long as Xiaobao put in the effort, she would have no problem.

「Before they knew it, another month had passed.」

Xiaobao had her exams and scored a perfect one hundred on every subject. That evening, her parents, report card in hand, were already planning a celebratory trip. It used to be easy for the three of them to just pack up and go, but now with two elders to care for, they had to be taken into consideration as well.

Who would have thought that the next day, Xiaobao would announce she didn’t want to go on a trip? She wanted to stay home and study, as she intended to start sixth grade after the New Year.

"Go for it! You can do it!" Whether she could actually do it or not didn’t matter; what was important was to encourage her!

Xiaobao seemed truly determined. "Dad, you have to tutor me during this winter vacation!"

Lin Feng asked dryly, "And what’s your plan?"

Xiaobao tilted her head. "When school starts, it will be the second semester of sixth grade. I have to catch up to their progress."

A headache was already forming for Lin Feng. "Alright. Dad will try his best, and you have to try your best, too." At that moment, he missed Dabao and Erbao immensely.

Xiaobao was as good as her word. "Today is my last day of fun, so don’t anyone try to stop me."

As soon as Xiaobao left, Zhang Yuxi sighed. "Just watch. By tomorrow, she’ll have forgotten everything she said today."

Since Xiaobao had scored perfect marks, she had very little winter homework, which she finished in a single day. She was sure to find an excuse to play later.

"Not necessarily," Lin Feng said, less pessimistic than his wife. "We have to believe in Xiaobao!"
