My CEO Ex: Let Me Go.-Chapter 53
Julian stepped forward and removed his mask. "Pop-Pop, Nana, I heard you weren’t feeling well on my way over with Vivienne, so I wanted to check in. How are you feeling?"
"I’m fine, don’t worry about me," Grandpa said with a cheerful smile.
"That’s a relief. Since Vivienne’s here, I won’t stay any longer. I’ll head out now. Vivienne, goodbye. Pop-Pop, Nana, goodbye. Mr. Alexander, goodbye." Julian put his mask back on and turned to leave the room.
"Vivienne, your friend is quite handsome. He’s a good young man," Evelyn said with a smile.
She shot a quick, subtle glance at Alexander. From her years of experience, it was clear Julian had feelings for Vivienne. But unlike Isabella, Julian had a better sense of boundaries.
I didn’t catch the underlying meaning in Evelyn’s words, so I just echoed, "Nana, he’s a huge star. All the girls love him."
"Really? How did you two meet?"
"He used to live near me when we were kids. We were neighbors, but they moved away later. I never expected to run into him again."
"That’s quite the coincidence!" Evelyn exclaimed. "So, you could say you’re childhood sweethearts?"
"I guess so."
Alexander remained seated on the sofa, motionless. His face had grown more serious, and his eyes were pitch black.
"Vivienne, you’ve had a long day at work. Pop-Pop and Nana know how much you care, so go ahead and rest. Let Alexander take you home," Evelyn said gently.
"Work?" That was clearly an excuse Alexander had given my grandparents.
But they weren’t fools. Alexander had come early with Isabella, and I hadn’t shown up all day. Now, seeing how I ignored Alexander since entering the room, it was obvious there were problems between us.
Grandpa didn’t want to get involved in every little thing, so he let us handle it ourselves.
"Pop-Pop, it’s fine. I’ll stay and keep you company..."
Before I could finish, Alexander stood up and walked over to me. "Let’s go."
Grandpa waved his hand. "Go on."
I pressed my lips together, reluctantly following Alexander out of the room.
Once we were in the hallway, we walked in silence, one in front of the other, heading toward the elevator.
The silence was only broken by the soft hum of the elevator moving up.
Ding! The elevator doors opened.
We entered one after the other, and Alexander pressed the button for the floor.
The doors closed, and the elevator began its ascent. The confined space was thick with an oppressive silence.
When we reached my floor, we stepped out of the elevator one after the other.
I paused in front of my room and looked at Alexander’s back. "You should go home and rest tonight."
My eyes had almost fully recovered, and there was no need for him to stay. Grandpa was doing better too, so a nurse could handle the night shift.
Alexander didn’t respond immediately. He just pushed open the door to the room and turned on the light.
The bright white light flooded the room.
"Why didn’t you answer your phone?" he suddenly asked.
"My phone died, it’s off," I said casually as I walked in and dropped my bag on the table.
The casual tone was too forced, clearly a lie.
Alexander took a couple of steps inside, turned around to face me, his eyes dark with intensity. "I’ve been looking for you all day."
I sat down on the sofa, replying coolly, "I didn’t ask you to."
Alexander’s voice dropped, and he spoke in a low tone. "Vivienne, why do you insist on talking like this?"
I looked up at him. "What’s wrong with it? Why were you looking for me? I’m not going to just disappear, am I?"
"Because I was worried you might do something foolish."
"Is it funny? What makes you think I’m not in my right mind?"
Alexander looked into my eyes, took a deep breath, and said softly, "I’m sorry about what happened online, Isabella..."
"What about it?" Seeing Alexander fall silent, I stared at him.
"Isabella is a public figure. She can’t afford negative news..."
"Isabella can’t handle negative news, but I can?"
"Vivienne, by the time I found out, the situation had already escalated. The best way to handle it was to downplay the heat. I think you should understand that staying silent is the best solution right now..."
Hearing Alexander say that, I instantly lost interest in questioning him.
This situation began with him and Isabella, and in the end, I was left with the reputation of being the mistress, being insulted by others, while he acted as if there was nothing he could do.
The reason for this was nothing more than favoritism.
If he truly loved someone, he would never let her suffer, just like how he’s fiercely protecting Isabella from negative news.
His heart isn’t here with me. Even though he knows I’m suffering, he continues to let it happen, continues to let me suffer.
He has clearly admitted that he only cares about Isabella. What’s the point of me asking any more questions?
Next time, when an apology is due, it will still be just that—an apology.
If I argue with him, he’ll probably accuse me of lacking empathy, of ruining Isabella’s career.
Seeing me fall silent, Alexander spoke again, "I didn’t expect some extreme fans to target you. I’m sorry for that..."
It’s not that he didn’t expect it. The delivery of threatening packages to me was a warning sign.
He just didn’t care enough to think about it.
He only cares whether Isabella will be affected, and I’m not even in his thoughts.
"Alexander, sometimes, saying sorry too much only makes it annoying." I looked up at him calmly.
I’ve already processed all the negative emotions on my own. His apology now feels irrelevant.
Lately, he’s said sorry so many times, but beyond that, he has given me no other help.
My ears are practically numb from hearing it over and over.
Alexander’s expression hardened, and he lowered his gaze. "What do you want me to do?"
"You want to make it up to me?"
"Yes."
"Fine. Promise me one thing. The thing is, I haven’t figured it out yet. I’ll tell you when I decide. Don’t worry, it won’t be anything like a condition for you to separate from Isabella."
In truth, I had already decided what the condition would be, but I couldn’t say it right now.
Since my grandfather’s health is improving, there won’t be a divorce between Alexander and me in the near future. But as time goes on, the pregnancy will inevitably be exposed.
What I really hope for is that, if Alexander and I do end up divorcing, he’ll give up custody of the child.
"Alright, I promise," Alexander responded without hesitation.
"I’m tired and need to rest. You should go now."
I waved him off. I should be angry.
He probably thought I’d question him or argue like last time.
But now I was so calm—so calm that I was just sending him away.
So calm that Alexander felt an uneasy sensation in his chest.
But in the end, he had no reason to stay. "Alright, I’ll leave then. Rest well."
Suddenly, Alexander stopped in his tracks.
I noticed he was still standing there and asked, confused, "Why aren’t you leaving?"
"Where did you go today? Have you been with Julian the whole time?" Alexander asked, his eyes fixed on me.
"Yes, so what?" I lifted my chin to meet his gaze and shot back, "Where did you go last night? Were you with Isabella the whole night?"
