My Billionaire Ex Beg For A Second Chance-Chapter 74: Morning, Sunshine
Felix stirred slowly from sleep. A drowsy smile tugged at the corners of his lips even before his eyes fully opened. He turned his head and looked down at the small, warm bodies curled up beside him—Nathan had his arms loosely wrapped around Maya, and Maya was nestled halfway into Felix’s side, her cheek pressed against his chest.
His heart gave a gentle squeeze at the sight.
He had already prepared a room just for them last night—airy, with soft nightlights, storybooks, plush toys, even a little tent. But the moment they saw it, their little faces scrunched up in uncertainty.
"It’s too big," Maya had said.
"And dark," Nathan added, gripping his sister’s hand.
"Can we sleep with you, Uncle Felix?"
And so, of course, they’d all ended up in his bed. Felix hadn’t hesitated. Having them close, knowing they felt safe enough with him—that alone made his chest swell with something warm and protective. The best kind of weight.
He smiled again now, brushing a few strands of Maya’s hair away from her forehead. She stirred faintly but didn’t wake. Nathan, breathing softly, remained still too. Felix let out a quiet breath and reached for his phone on the bedside table.
Few missed call.
From Katherine.
Felix frowned immediately. "Shit," he muttered, cursing under his breath so softly the air barely carried it.
He stared at the screen for a moment, then swiped to check the time. Almost 5:45 a.m. He didn’t want to wake her if she was still sleeping, but the guilt tugged at him. After failing to get through to her last night, he’d ended up putting his phone down and focused entirely on the twins. They’d played board games until Nathan yawned wide enough to swallow his own face, and five minutes later they were both fast asleep in the crook of his arms.
He hesitated for a beat, then tapped out a quick message:
Hey, sorry I missed your call. Are you up now?
After hitting send, Felix carefully peeled himself from under Maya’s small body, making sure not to wake either of them. He adjusted the blanket around them, tucking it gently under Nathan’s chin before stepping away barefoot.
He padded down the hall, then went downstairs to the kitchen, running a hand through his messy hair. He opened a drawer, pulled out a frying pan, and placed it on the stove.
"What to make for breakfast..." he murmured, pulling out eggs, some vegetables, and fresh bread. He’d thought about calling his chef, but no. Not today.
He was cracking the first egg into a bowl when his phone began to vibrate loudly on the marble countertop.
Incoming Video Call — Katherine
Felix blinked, startled for a moment before scrambling to grab it. His heart picked up a little.
He swiped to answer.
Katherine’s face filled the screen, her damp hair clinging to her cheeks and shoulders, clearly fresh from a shower. But before he could say anything—
"Oh my god!" she gasped, her eyes going wide. "Felix, please tell me you’re wearing pants and not naked video calling me right now!"
Felix blinked, then burst into a laugh. "Relax, woman. I’m not naked." He turned the camera toward the counter, setting it down, then backed up a few steps to show her—his upper body was bare, but he was wearing black cotton sweatpants. "See? Pants still intact."
Katherine squinted, then pressed a hand to her face with a groan. "Sorry! I just—god, you’re always fully dressed. It startled me."
Felix smirked. "Get used to this version of me. A little wild, a little underdressed."
She made a face. "I’ll pass."
He chuckled, leaning over to the phone again. "So, about the call—I’m sorry I missed yours. I passed out with the twins. We had a little board game tournament."
Katherine smiled. "It’s fine. I missed yours too. I was at dinner, and the room was so loud I didn’t even hear it ring."
"No worries," Felix said. "We’re even."
"So... how are they? The twins?"
"Great," Felix said, and he meant it. "They’re angels. Though I’m pretty sure Maya plotted to steal my pillow halfway through the night."
Katherine laughed quietly, and Felix was about to say more when a soft thud echoed from the hallway. He turned his head and saw two small shapes appear at the kitchen entrance.
"Speak of the devils," he said, picking up the phone and turning the camera. "Guess who’s here?"
Nathan blinked sleepily up at him. "Is that Mom?"
Felix handed the phone to the twins, and they crowded in front of the screen immediately.
"Mommy!" Maya beamed.
Nathan waved enthusiastically. "Hi Mom!"
Katherine’s delighted voice came through the phone, "Hi, my babies! Did you sleep well? Did Uncle Felix snore?"
Maya giggled. "Nooo. He’s warm though. Like a bear!"
Felix rolled his eyes and went back to the stove while the twins took over the conversation. He laid out slices of bread, whisked eggs in a bowl, and started chopping vegetables. He could hear Katherine’s soft voice drifting from the phone—asking Nathan to be gentle with his toothbrush, reminding Maya not to throw her dress on the floor, and telling them both to listen to Felix.
"I mean it," she said firmly. "Whatever he says, you do it, okay?"
"Okay!" they chorused.
Felix smiled to himself as he dropped butter into the pan. He was still at the stove, plating toast, when the twins came running back with the phone.
"Here, Mom wants to talk to you," Maya said, handing it over.
Felix wiped his hands on a towel and took it.
Katherine was looking at him again. Her hair was now up in a loose twist, and her robe had changed to a casual hoodie. She looked... tired, maybe. Not in the puffy-eyed way, but something deeper.
"You alright there?" he asked gently.
Katherine blinked. "Yeah. Why wouldn’t I be?"
Felix tilted his head, watching her expression. "I don’t know. You just seem... off."
"I’m fine," she said a little too quickly. Then added, "Really. Everything’s fine."
He smiled, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. "Of course. You’re gonna do great there."
Katherine gave a tight smile in return. "Thanks."
They lingered for a second, saying nothing, just staring at each other through the screen.
Then Felix glanced at the twins behind him. "I better finish breakfast before they eat the cereal box."
"Alright. Call me later?"
"Always."
She ended the call, and the screen went black.
Felix placed the phone down gently and turned back to the pan, flipping the toast with ease.
His smile faded just a little.
No, she hadn’t told him the truth just now.
And while he wouldn’t push—he never would—he wouldn’t stop watching, either.
