Chapter 101: Too Close for Comfort

Katherine felt the hallway lights flicker in slow motion as everything around her stilled. Seconds dripped by like icy droplets. She remembered the echo of Leonard’s box thumping on the other side of the threshold, and her spine quivered. Before she could think, she stepped forward—toward him.

"What are you doing here, Leonard?" Her voice trembled, somewhere between outrage and numb confusion, each word clipped with emotional distance. She squared her shoulders, her silent armor against the vulnerability he’d forced into her world once more.

Leonard, standing a step inside the other apartment—her neighbor now—raised his hands, palms outward. His eyes were steady, his posture open. "Well... it’s exactly what it looks like," he said quietly. "I live here now." Katherine’s chest tightened, eyelids pinching shut.

She swallowed. "So you’re our new... neighbor?" The word tasted cold on her tongue.

"Yes. That’s me." Leonard grinned awkwardly. The kind of grin that didn’t quite reach his eyes. Katherine stared at him, trying to reconcile the man in front of her with the memory of his sprawling estate.

And now... here he was. In this building with creaky pipes and carpet that didn’t even cost a quarter of what his did.

Leonard seemed to sense the question hovering. His grin faded, replaced by something more thoughtful. He cleared his throat, rubbed the back of his neck. "I, uh... I know this probably looks strange. Believe me, I get it. This place isn’t exactly—well, let’s just say it’s not my usual."

Katherine arched a brow but said nothing.

He continued, gentler now. "I thought... I thought this way I could be closer to the twins." He glanced toward the shared wall between their apartments, his voice dipping with something quieter. "I’ve missed a lot already. I don’t want to keep doing that. I thought... if I’m just across the hall, maybe I won’t."

Katherine folded her arms, her skepticism softening just slightly.

Leonard gestured around him. "And honestly? I like it here. It’s different. Real. The change of environment feels... right.

He hesitated, searching her face for something: approval? pity? forgiveness? None of those came easily. He shifted, gaze going to the twins, who—sensing a change—popped their heads around the corner.

Nathan’s eyes widened. "Uncle Leonard? Is that you? Is he our new neighbor?" he blurted, voice full of delight and surprise. Maya, her pigtails like bouncy question marks, scrambled around Felix and Katherine, her arms lifting in hopeful wonder. "Are you our neighbor now?"

Leonard exhaled and knelt down so he could be level with them. "Yes, sweetheart. I—your neighbor now." He brought them each into a hug, and they giggled, oblivious to the tension. Nathan said, "Welcome, neighbor!" and Maya echoed like a tiny chorus, "Yes, welcome!" Their sweet voices echoed in the hallway.

Katherine stood rooted to the spot, one hand still pressed over her mouth as she fought back the uneasy swirl in her chest. She loved that the twins were happy—but this... this closeness felt too raw. She watched their bright faces, their innocent warmth, and a well of protective tenderness surged in her heart. She bit her lower lip to steady it.

Leonard glanced up, seeing Katherine’s rigid posture, the tightness of her grip at her heart. He stood, brushed loose hair behind his ear, and met her gaze. "This— I wanted this," he said softly. "Not to spy... but... so I could be here for them."

His words hung between them—soft, honest, demanding space and forgiveness all at once.

By the time the hallway settled back into silence, Katherine had retreated into her own apartment with the twins. Felix closed the door behind them, the lock clicking like the last note in an unresolved melody. She leaned against the closed door, eyes closed, knees heavy. The air seemed thick, stifling.

Felix joined her quickly. He took her hand gently, guiding her toward the kitchen counter. He sat beside her, silent for a moment, watching the twins helps sketch the layout of their new "neighbor" apartment. He reached out, brushing a stray hair behind Katherine’s ear.

"You okay?" he asked softly, eyes flicking to her jawline, noticing how tight her grip on the counter was.

She shook her head, words catching in her throat. "I... I don’t know, Felix." Her voice, when it came, was brittle. "This is... too much."

He nodded slowly. His own expression was a mixture of empathy and wariness. "They’re happy," he said, voice firm but gentle. "But what about you?"

She pressed her palms to her eyes. "It feels like... like no matter how far we try to go, he catches up." Her voice cracked between words. "He’s there when we send them to school... when we pick them up... when we share dinner here... He walks into our lives like it’s always been his right."

Felix exhaled, tension threading through his shoulders. She leaned her head on his shoulder, pressing the heat of her temple to his chest, and he wrapped his arms around her protectively.

"I get it," he whispered. "You always wanted what’s best for the kids... but this—this is not what you bargained for."

She shook her head. "I never imagined it would be like this."

Felix’s hand slid down to rest on hers. "Maybe we need—" he paused, searching her face. "Maybe we need to talk to him. To set boundaries." 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

She pulled back, staring into his eyes. He nodded, eyes full of loving concern. "Maybe just... later."

She closed her eyes, absorbing the warmth of his presence. In the background, Nathan cackled with Maya, and their laughter pressed through the silence—bright and innocent.

She brushed a fingertip across her lips. "He really is that close..."

Felix tightened his hold around her. "Yeah. He wants to be. That much is clear."

They sat there, watching the twins build colorful towers with blocks. The twins glanced back at their corner, eyes bright.

Katherine swallowed hard, hearing in her son’s voice both innocence and ownership: our neighbor.

With Felix’s arm around her, she realized the truth sinking in. This was just the beginning.
