Chapter 51: 51. Catching Lisa

Cara slipped into the uniform in the store’s backroom while Farrah paced outside, muttering to herself. Moments later, Cara stepped out, tugging the hem of her shirt into place.

Farrah gave her a once-over and said,

"We’re good to go. Let’s get this over with."

Cara held up a hand to stop her. "Wait. We can’t just storm in there without a plan. Is she still working right now?"

"Yeah, but her shift’s about to end. So whatever we’re doing, we need to move fast," Farrah said, her impatience evident.

Cara thought for a moment, her eyes narrowing. "You’re on good terms with her, right?"

Farrah nodded. "Yes, I am. She even goes to my father’s church."

"Perfect," Cara said, her mind racing. "Find a way to get her outside. I’ll strike before she knows what’s happening."

Farrah hesitated, glancing back toward the diner. "You know people are looking for you, right? Especially Jackie. I even asked Lisa earlier if she’d seen you."

"What did she say?" Cara asked, her tone sharp.

"She said she saw you leaving the diner and heading toward the driveway," Farrah replied.

Cara rolled her eyes. "Figures. Alright, go in there and trick her into coming out to the driveway. Tell her your father wants to talk about church stuff, away from the noise. I’ll be waiting."

Without another word, Farrah walked back into the kitchen while Cara slipped around the building, positioning herself near the dimly lit driveway. She crouched in the shadows, her heart pounding as she waited for Lisa to appear.

Ten minutes later, Farrah emerged from the kitchen with Lisa trailing behind her. Lisa glanced around, clearly confused. "Where’s your dad? Did he leave already?" she asked Farrah, her voice tinged with suspicion.

Cara moved quietly, staying in the shadows as she closed the distance between herself and Lisa. Her pulse quickened, the anger in her chest building like a storm.

Lisa turned toward Farrah, frowning. "What’s going on? Where is—"

Before Lisa could finish, Cara struck. She pounced from the darkness, slamming Lisa into the wall of the building. Lisa’s eyes widened in shock, and her hands clawed at Cara’s, but she was no match.

"You thought you could get rid of me?" Cara snarled, her voice low and venomous. She shoved her fist into Lisa’s mouth, silencing her screams and breaking her teeth in the process. Lisa’s eyes watered in pain and terror.

Cara leaned closer, her voice a growl. "Well, here I’m, alive and well, Lisa. Your accomplice? Not so much. And now, it’s your turn to join him."

At that moment, Joana’s car screeched to a stop in front of them. Without hesitation, Cara and Farrah hoisted Lisa’s struggling body toward the vehicle. Cara’s hand remained in Lisa’s mouth, muffling any sound she tried to make.

Joana stepped out and opened the trunk. Lisa thrashed weakly as they shoved her inside. Cara removed her fist just long enough for Lisa to gasp and try to scream, but a quick, brutal punch silenced her once more. Lisa slumped unconscious, her head lolling to the side.

Joana slammed the trunk shut, her expression calm as ever. "So," she said, turning to Cara, "are you coming with me to finish this?"

Cara glanced at Farrah. "Tell Jackie and anyone else looking for me that I texted you saying I went home. I’ll send the message now."

She quickly typed out a text and hit send, showing it to Farrah for confirmation.

"Thanks, Farrah," Cara said, patting her friend on the shoulder. "I’ll handle this myself. See you tomorrow."

Farrah hesitated, then nodded. "Alright. Be careful. And Joana, thank you for saving my friend’s life."

Joana smirked. "No need to thank me. It was my pleasure."

With that, Joana climbed into the driver’s seat, and Cara followed, closing the door behind her. Farrah watched the car pull away before heading back into the diner, her heart still racing.

Joana kept her hands on the wheel, stealing quick glances at Cara. Sometimes, Cara caught her in the act, but she said nothing, letting the silence linger.

"You can take a picture—it’ll last longer," Cara finally said, her tone dry.

Joana smirked, her eyes flicking briefly to Cara again. "Oh, I could take a picture, cupcake, but it’d never do justice to the real thing."

"Your eyes should be on the road," Cara said, crossing her arms.

"They are, Cupcake," Joana teased. "But I have to ask—when did you become so tough?"

Cara frowned. "I don’t understand the question. What do you mean by ’tough’?"

"I mean," Joana began, "you punched a woman in the mouth before I even got to the scene. And then, right in front of me, you knocked her out cold with another punch to the face. That’s not the Cara I knew. There’s something... different about you."

Cara’s gaze darkened. "Death changes you," she said, her voice low. "It’s made me tough. I’m sure your death changed you too. You can’t tell me you were always this strong and confident."

Joana chuckled softly, a hint of amusement in her voice. "You know, you could just kill the bitch in the trunk, in fact I should have killed Victor in the woods. There’s no need to drag it out."

[She’s right, Cara. Why are you dragging this out?]

Cara turned her head sharply, meeting Joana’s gaze. "Victor most definitely knows something about the Temp-V distribution in this town," she said. "And Lisa... Lisa might know what happened to me the day I died. And if she doesn’t, well, I just want to make her suffer, that bitch is going to get it. I think it’ll make me feel better."

Joana grinned, her eyes returning to the road. "Fair enough."

The tension in the car seemed to settle for a moment until Joana accidentally ran a red light. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"Shit," Joana muttered under her breath, glancing in the rearview mirror as flashing lights filled it.

A patrol car trailed behind them, its siren blaring. Joana cursed again, pulling over to the side of the road.

The officer stepped out of his vehicle and began walking toward them. Just as he reached their car, loud thuds echoed from the trunk—Lisa, kicking and making her presence known.

Joana and Cara froze, their eyes meeting in a shared moment of panic.

"What now?" Cara whispered.

Cara’s mind raced, calculating their next move.
