Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 554: When the Money’s Right
After several hundred bucks went in, Audrey Sutton realized Shane Warner wasn’t just making mistakes; he really didn’t have the skill.
Audrey knew he was proud, so she didn’t tease him. She just chuckled, "How about we switch to a different machine? These things are hard to win from anyway. This machine is probably rigged, not easy to catch anything. Let’s try a simpler one."
Shane felt embarrassed in front of his wife, especially with Simon hitting the mark every time next to him, but he could tell Audrey was giving him a way out.
Audrey walked over to another machine filled with small plushies, which was much cheaper per try: "This one needs game coins, I’ll go exchange some."
Shane: "I’ll go, you wait here for me."
Audrey nodded, saying, "While you’re at it, get me a bottle of mineral water. I saw some for sale at the counter."
"Okay."
Just as Shane left, Barry Barrett and the others came around: "Hey Sutton, where’s your husband?"
Audrey smiled and said, "He went to exchange some game coins."
Flora Lane: "Why exchange? Brother Seraphina has loads of them."
Simon Sue: "Which one do you want to catch?"
Audrey glanced at the machine Shane just tried and saw he wasn’t coming back anytime soon. Unsure if it was the machine or the person, she really wanted that blind box, so she pointed at the machine and said, "That one, can you give it a try?"
Simon: "These machines usually need money dumped into them. If you spend enough, you can get it. I’ll give it a shot."
Audrey initially wanted to go over and pay by scanning the QR code, but Simon popped out his phone and scanned it himself. Besides Audrey and a few others, a bunch of girls interested in the blind box gathered around to watch.
Amid the crowd, someone whispered, "Isn’t that Simon Sue? He kind of looks like him."
"No way, Simon left long ago. I saw his manager’s car drive away, and this morning he wasn’t wearing that outfit."
"Yeah, plus he’s got so many engagements, when would he have the time to be here playing with claw machines?"
Beside the murmurs of the crowd, Simon once again didn’t disappoint and snagged the blind box.
Audrey couldn’t hide her excitement and admiration, quickly bending down to pick the box from the machine window, giving Simon a thumbs up: "You’re amazing, look at you today, going on a claw machine spree in Sector C?"
Seeing Audrey happily giving Simon a thumbs up from afar, Shane, back from exchanging coins, felt even more frustrated.
He truly wanted that thing, even though he said he was fine earlier, he still yearned for it deep down.
Now that she got her wish, he should have felt happy for her, but he wasn’t, knowing that the one fulfilling her wish was Simon.
Coincidentally, he even heard a girl in the crowd say, "That was awesome, I saw a guy trying here earlier but couldn’t get anything, he must have spent at least a thousand."
Simon laughed and said to Audrey, "The money your husband put in earlier must have done the trick. If he tried again, he could definitely get it too."
Audrey didn’t know Shane was nearby, and couldn’t help but complain, "He can’t even aim for the box, another try wouldn’t work either. He’s never done this before, no experience."
"Hey, look, isn’t that Third Young Master Warner over there? I saw a street snap video on X today of him with his wife wearing this outfit. They look great together." In the crowd, once again, the murmurs started.
"It’s really him, didn’t think we’d see him in person. He’s even more handsome than in the video, great physique, and looks amazing in that traditional outfit."
"Hey? Isn’t that his wife over there? They’re wearing matching outfits."
Audrey vaguely heard the words "matching outfits" and snapped back from the excitement of getting the blind box to spot Shane returning. She smiled and walked toward him, shaking the box in her hand to share her happiness, saying, "Look, we got it. Simon said if there’s enough money, it comes out. We spent so much earlier, almost a waste for someone else. Should’ve let you try again, I’m sure you could’ve got it."
Shane snorted, "I can’t even aim at the box, another try wouldn’t help. I’ve never done this before, unlike your childhood friend who’s got the experience."
Understanding instantly, Audrey realized he overheard her earlier complaint.
Knowing Shane’s pettiness, Audrey looped her arm around his, playfully saying, "Everybody’s got to start somewhere. If you practiced more, you’d definitely be better than him. Have you got the game coins? I never got one before either. How about we play together, practice together?"
Shane handed her the game coins from his pocket: "You play by yourself."
Watching Shane turn away, Audrey quickly caught up: "Young Master Warner, are you really going to leave me alone in this unfamiliar place?"
Without the mood to act along, Shane walked away, face taut, in the opposite direction of Simon.
Audrey laid it on thick, knowing well that Shane was always more susceptible to flattery than toughness. It always worked like a charm.
After some distance, Audrey pulled him to a claw machine full of Pikachus, big and small, of various sizes.
"How about we try this? I want that big one."
Shane still wore a long face but stopped moving forward, standing by her side, coldly saying, "You catch it yourself."
Seeing his mood lift, Audrey thought about restoring his self-esteem by demonstrating her own clumsy attempts at the claw machine, letting him find some superiority over her.
Having no real technique herself, Audrey used to try claw machines when she went to the movies with her dorm mates, rarely winning, more often than not, the money spent was like throwing buns to a dog, never to return.
Despite spending several game coins aiming for the biggest Pikachu inside, she ended up with just a palm-sized one.
"Turns out it’s true; enough money does bring it out, such a scam."
Just as Audrey finished venting, Barry and the others found their way over.
Barry carried a large transparent plastic bag filled with assorted stuffed toys, Seraphina Vaughn cradled several in her arms, and even Flora had her hands full.
Seraphina looked at the palm-sized Pikachu in Audrey’s hand and came over to boast, "You guys spent all that time and only got this little thing? Look at me, a whole bunch, all by myself."
Flora quickly quipped, "You’re the very definition of too much money, too little sense. How much did you spend to get those few toys?"
Barry grinned, showing off, "Look at me, this big bag’s practically too heavy to lift, and it cost less than Seraphina’s, proving the importance of having a skilled golden miner on your side."
