Chapter 460: Chapter 460: A Truly Warm Person

Miles Sterling was playing cards with some peers in the card room; before he left, he arranged for Vanessa Sterling to stay in his room, instructing her not to go anywhere.

At The Sterling home, there wasn’t much Vanessa Sterling was interested in exploring; she’d wanted to find a room to shut herself in long ago.

Though Wendy Jennings’ words had been heard countless times, being spoken to like that never left anyone feeling particularly comfortable.

Staying quietly in a room was quite nice. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Miles Sterling’s room was diagonally opposite Quentin Sterling’s room. Though neither of them lived at home often anymore, their former living spaces were still kept, cleaned daily, and ready for them to stay at any time.

Vanessa Sterling was lying on the sofa near the wall by the door, vaguely hearing the sounds of Quentin Sterling and Clarissa Morgan returning, but soon she heard footsteps leaving, sounding like a man’s footsteps, guessing it might be Quentin Sterling who had left.

Shortly after Quentin Sterling left, Wendy Jennings’ voice rang out from outside, loud and clear, saying, "Clarissa, I heard you got caught in the rain. I’ve had some ginger tea made for you to ward off the chill."

Clarissa Morgan’s voice was very soft, saying, "Thank you, Sister-in-law."

Wendy Jennings: "No need to be polite with family. You haven’t had lunch yet, have you? I’ve left some dishes in the kitchen; should I have someone bring them up, or will you go down to eat later?"

Clarissa Morgan: "I’ll go down to eat later; sorry to trouble you, Sister-in-law."

Wendy Jennings: "Alright, I’ll go down now to have the kitchen heat up the food."

Clarissa Morgan nodded: "Thanks so much, I’ll head down after I dry my hair."

Vanessa Sterling thought pensively about how Clarissa Morgan had hurriedly left the dining table, and not long after, Quentin Sterling had rushed out too; they were back now, but she wondered what had happened.

After Wendy Jennings left, it quieted down outside the door again.

Vanessa Sterling cuddled a thin blanket and fell asleep on the sofa.

After an indeterminate amount of time, there was a knock at the door: "Knock, knock—"

"Vanessa, are you in there?"

It was Clarissa Morgan’s voice.

Vanessa Sterling woke up, got up, and went to open the door: "Aunt?"

Clarissa Morgan smiled and said, "I saw Wilder playing cards downstairs, didn’t see you, and thought you went home."

Vanessa Sterling didn’t know Clarissa Morgan’s intentions, pursed her lips and smiled: "Just took a nap, Aunt, is there something you need?"

Clarissa Morgan: "I brought some snacks up, sit with me and try them?"

Vanessa Sterling paused for a moment, feeling slightly wary of Clarissa Morgan, especially since this was Miles Sterling’s room; she only dared to lie on the sofa, not daring to touch his things.

But Clarissa Morgan stepped right in, carrying the snacks to a small round table by the window, smiling as she said, "I was just feeling lonely by myself, let’s sit and chat."

Since she had come in, there wasn’t any justification to send her away; Vanessa Sterling had to close the door and sit on the chair opposite Clarissa Morgan.

Although Clarissa Morgan always called warmly, Vanessa Sterling didn’t have much to chat about with her, just sat awkwardly across from her.

Clarissa Morgan found a topic and asked with a smile, "Do you and Audrey work on the same website drawing comics?"

Vanessa Sterling nodded cautiously: "Yes."

Clarissa Morgan: "Whose work is better, yours or hers?"

Vanessa Sterling paused briefly, dryly laughed, and answered, "About the same, Audrey entered the industry later than me, but with her current progress, she’ll soon surpass me."

Clarissa Morgan jokingly asked, "You and her seem to have a good relationship, right? You probably don’t compete over these things in private?"

Vanessa Sterling didn’t know what Clarissa Morgan was trying to find out, politely replied: "No."

Clarissa Morgan: "You and Audrey both have good natures and are about the same age; you probably talk and share a lot, don’t you?"

Vanessa Sterling: "...Yes, sometimes we chat."

Clarissa Morgan: "What do you talk about?"

Vanessa Sterling glanced at Clarissa Morgan, unsure for a moment how to respond to her question.

Clarissa Morgan seemed taken aback for a moment, then laughed, saying, "Oh, I’m just casually asking to make conversation. Try these snacks; they’re freshly made and still warm."

Vanessa Sterling saw Clarissa Morgan eating them herself, assuming nothing had been added inside, before reaching out to grab one for herself.

Vanessa Sterling was someone who wasn’t very adept at finding topics; with Audrey Sutton, she was more relaxed, spoke a bit more, but with Clarissa Morgan, she felt genuinely uncomfortable.

There was always a sense that Clarissa Morgan’s friendly demeanor hid ulterior motives, and she wasn’t truly being kind, just like last time when she tricked her into a blind date.

"By the way, Vanessa, your uncle lived here when he was a child too, wasn’t he about fourteen or fifteen then? Tell me about him back then."

When Clarissa Morgan said this, she stared at Vanessa Sterling’s face; at the mention of "Uncle," Vanessa’s expression noticeably shifted, seemingly confirming the suspicions held in her heart.

Vanessa Sterling remembered that period clearly, but she dared not bring it up in front of Clarissa Morgan, merely lowered her eyes, avoiding eye contact, and said, "...Uncle was often at school, rarely seen at home."

Clarissa Morgan: "Was he always so mature, or was he mischievous as a kid?"

Vanessa Sterling lightly shook her head: "...Always very sensible, all the family elders liked him."

Clarissa Morgan: "And you?"

Vanessa Sterling suddenly widened her eyes, looking shocked and surprised at Clarissa Morgan, feeling a sudden pang of guilt, swallowed, and said, "...Uncle is very nice; probably no one dislikes him."

Clarissa Morgan nodded with a smile: "True, he has a hardworking and patient nature, always eager to help others warmly. His good temper makes it hard for anyone to dislike him."

Vanessa Sterling laughed awkwardly, unsure how to respond.

Footsteps could be heard outside, seemingly stopping right at the door.

Clarissa Morgan stood up with a smile, saying, "It should be your uncle coming back."

Saying that, Clarissa Morgan walked over and opened the door, calling out to Quentin Sterling, who was about to go to the room diagonally opposite: "Quentin, I’m over here."

Quentin Sterling turned to her, walked over and asked, "Why did you come to Miles’ room?"

Clarissa Morgan: "Vanessa is here; I chatted with her for a while."

Quentin Sterling saw that Clarissa Morgan seemed calmer, feeling more reassured, the frown on his face gradually relaxing. He looked down at Clarissa Morgan, asking gently, "Have you eaten?"

Clarissa Morgan: "I just ate before coming up; haven’t you eaten yet? I’ll go down with you for dinner."

Quentin Sterling nodded with a smile: "I’ll wash up and change clothes first."

Clarissa Morgan: "Okay, I’ll wait for you."

Vanessa Sterling watched the two of them walk hand in hand into the room diagonally opposite and simply got up to close the door.

There shouldn’t be any expectations, yet her heart still longs for his warmth.

He really is a very warm person.
