Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling is Multifaceted!-Chapter 230: Relying on Oneself
Miles Harrington chuckled, summoning the butler, "Never mind, no need to investigate. Next time I’ll see what she says directly. If she’s truly willing to stay and work for me, it means she probably has no ulterior motives."
"Yes, sir," the butler replied respectfully.
As the butler retreated, Ethan Sterling’s expression turned dark and foreboding.
It seemed his young friend was growing up too quickly, raising suspicions.
But Seraphina Redgrave was a smart woman. She surely realized that advancing at such a pace would arouse suspicion, yet she still pursued it.
Ever since the publication of the law about Veridian Isle’s unauthorized fugitives, Seraphina had been working even harder.
She wanted to reach that day faster.
No matter the cost.
Her thoughts were only of Veridian Isle and the pitiable people there.
And he, Ethan, in her eyes was not even as significant as the beggars.
How foolish of her.
Even if she could accomplish this task on her own, she would certainly pay a heavy price. Was she not worried about that?
But he worried.
...
"Councilor Everett, here’s the newly delivered bill for you to review."
At the enormous desk, sitting on one side was Mindy Everett, while Seraphina Redgrave stood respectfully.
Mindy wore a set of women’s suits, neat and tidy, her long hair meticulously coiled up, concentrating on the document handed to her.
"I’ll go get busy then."
Seraphina prepared to leave.
"Wait." Mindy stopped her in time, "Sit down first."
Seraphina pulled out a chair and sat down.
Mindy adjusted her glasses, scrutinizing the girl in front of her, whose eyes were clear and demeanor was graceful; a rare talent, outstanding in appearance, and importantly, very capable.
Mindy’s gaze softened, speaking gently, "What do you want to say, working under me?"
"I’ve learned a lot from Councilor Everett, it’s a privilege of mine."
Seraphina’s words were humble yet confident.
"Everyone knows, my background in The Law Council isn’t deep, so you might feel uncomfortable coming to me. However, I must tell you, I won’t oppress the civilians like other councilors. As long as you are excellent enough, I will recommend you to become a councilor."
Mindy spoke earnestly.
Seraphina’s eyes flickered.
Becoming a councilor was her necessary path; only as a councilor would she have the right to amend laws.
But she did not show her heart’s wavering, softly asking, "Can civilians also become councilors?"
"If you can attract capital," Mindy supplemented.
"In the end, isn’t it still a game of capital?" Seraphina asked, her tone still very calm, with no trace of discontent.
In The Law Council, civilians’ dissatisfaction was of no use.
"There’s no other way; this is Z country. However, the President thinks highly of you. If you work for the President in the future, it might be more comfortable than here. As for capital, just don’t go against it."
Mindy believed she had thought of a good solution.
In school, naïve students yearned for fairness and faced the capital game with mysterious courage to oppose it.
But once in society, superiors would bluntly tell you not to stand against capital; you are but a speck of dust.
Mindy indeed admired her, which is why she shared so many truths.
Seraphina did not reject Mindy’s kindness and nodded, "Okay, I understand."
"Then what’s your plan next? If you accept me as your teacher, I can introduce you to a few capital magnates."
This was a consideration Mindy made for Seraphina, though not without expecting benefits.
If she became Mindy’s student, from then on, they would be inseparable, no matter what conflicts arose in The Law Council, Seraphina would always have to support her unconditionally.
This was the unshakable network of The Law Council.
"Councilor Everett, if I only wish to break through on my own, do you think it’s unrealistic?"
Seraphina stared deeply at Mindy, her eyes glistening with determination.
Mindy stayed silent but did not discourage her, gently saying, "It will be very difficult."
"I understand that I am just a small student and assistant right now. I’ll take things step by step, slowly advancing."
Seraphina composed her emotions.
"Alright, then when you decide to accept my recommendation, come find me." Mindy always kept her door open for her.
The night at Hibiscus Garden was serene and beautiful.
Ethan Sterling dragged Seraphina Redgrave to play video games with him, giving her no room for refusal.
The two sat close together, as the characters on the screen battled fiercely, a bloodbath ensuing.
"Mindy Everett was arranged by you, wasn’t she?"
Seraphina focused on the character she controlled, staring intently.
Ethan curled his lips and merely asked, "What makes you think that?"
"On the surface, The Law Council appears glamorous, but in reality, it’s rotten and dark. As a student with no foundation, why would Mindy be so eager to groom me into a councilor?"
Approaching the decisive point, Seraphina tensed her nerves, not forgetting to say, "So it’s obvious someone is instructing her like this. Do you want me under your control that much?"
Even if Mindy claimed to lack a strong background, she wouldn’t be so easily fooled.
"You were meant to be mine."
Ethan grinned wickedly.
"..." This answer successfully distracted Seraphina, leading her character to face a tragic counterattack by Ethan’s.
Ethan arrogantly eyed Seraphina, his gaze traveling up and down, "Take it off."
This was the game’s rule: for every lost round, one must remove an item of clothing, with one hour as the duration.
Seraphina naturally didn’t want to, but with Ethan’s persistent pestering, she could do nothing else and reluctantly agreed.
"Oh." 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
Seraphina removed her slippers, revealing her delicate little feet.
Boring, Ethan thought, looking at her ankle, tempted to bite.
He grabbed the air conditioner’s remote and considerately raised the temperature a bit.
The second round began.
This time, Seraphina played with all her might, not permitting any mistakes, while continuing the previous conversation, "If I agreed with Mindy, borrowing your power to wreak havoc, and my objectives were discovered, you’d get entangled by my issues too."
She could never truly be under his control; Seraphina was terrifyingly self-aware, always knowing precisely what she wanted.
"Your man only sees himself as taking a dog for a walk."
Ethan replied arrogantly, his fingers deftly dancing across the controller.
This surprised Seraphina, who looked at Ethan and asked, "Do you mean you want to help me?"
She must have understood it right.
It shouldn’t be.
Why would Ethan think this way?
"If a man doesn’t help his own woman, can he still be called a man?"
Ethan maintained a serious expression, but his words were irresistibly charming.
