Chapter 47 - 47: Why Are You Yelling

Kane's words confirmed the suspicion that had been lingering in her mind. She really had seen Daniel that morning.

She felt like something was missing, but she couldn't figure out what. It frustrated her.

After a short chat with Kane, she grabbed her laptop and started fixing the tampered surveillance video.

Not long after it was altered, extra security measures had been added. That made it even more suspicious.

What had happened in those missing three minutes?

Curiosity pushed Chantelle to work faster. She wanted to break through the security as soon as possible.

Her fingers moved quickly across the keyboard. The video entered the analysis program, and the progress bar reached ninety-nine percent.

Seeing the program running on its own, Chantelle decided to wash her face. Just as she stood up, her phone rang.

It was Calvin.

"Ms. Chantelle, I found the wolf-head tattoo. It belongs to the Lone Wolf, a foreign assassin organization."

"Oh? That's interesting. So, someone actually hired an international assassin to kill me?"

She had suspected her attacker's identity, but hearing it confirmed still caught her off guard.

Her enemy must have spent a fortune on this.

"The Lone Wolf assassin organization has never failed a mission. They're tough to handle. Should we report this to headquarters and request backup?"

"Don't alert Master unless we have solid proof. Just tighten security and find out who hired him as soon as possible."

"Ms. Chantelle, the Lone Wolf's skills are no joke. Without reinforcements, this will be too dangerous!" Calvin sounded anxious.

"Then call Thirteen. Keep it between us."

"Okay, Ms. Chantelle."

At Fifth Ring Road, Hundred Acre Garden, in a small old western-style building, Kate had changed out of her princess gown. She now wore a simple emerald dress with floral prints.

Her face was pale, giving her the look of a fragile beauty.

She sat in the living room, staring blankly at her phone, scrolling as if she had lost all hope.

The news of her fraudulent donation had gone viral. No one cared about the smaller scandals anymore.

It wasn't because someone had covered it up.

A bigger scandal had taken over the headlines.

The Wilson family released a statement at eight this morning.

They confirmed that Kate's donation was fraudulent. They also clarified that the media completely fabricated the news about Daniel marrying Kate, which had spread from a previous interview.

They announced plans to sue anyone who had spread false information.

Shortly after, the topic "Charitable Black Widow Abandoned by Daniel Wilson" started trending on Facebook.

It stayed on the trending list and quickly shot to the top. A bold red "hot" tag appeared beside it.

Kate felt like her entire world was collapsing.

The fraudulent donation ruined her reputation, and the Wilson family's statement completely destroyed her.

Someone also had obtained her naked photos.

She had taken them when she was young and naive. She didn't know when they would be exposed, but she knew it would be the final blow.

Fear took over.

Her hands trembled as she gripped her phone. It felt like the world had turned ice-cold.

How did this happen?

She had been so close to becoming Mrs. Wilson.

Now, she was hated by everyone, like a worthless street rat.

Why?

It had to be because of that woman!

Ever since she met her, everything had fallen apart. One disaster after another.

She was the cause of all this misfortune.

If she could get rid of her, everything would return to how it was.

Kate's mind was filled with thoughts until she reached an irrational conclusion.

She grabbed her phone and ran upstairs barefoot. Without hesitation, she pushed open Ruby's door.

"Mom, help me kill—"

Kate dashed in, but she nearly puked when she saw the scene in front of her.

A man was lying on top of Ruby with his back facing her.

The air reeked of garbage.

Kate felt utterly humiliated. She screamed, covered her face, and bolted downstairs.

Everything she believed about her mother had just crumbled.

Her mind was in chaos, torn between rage and despair.

In her frantic escape, she lost her footing on the stairs and nearly tumbled down.

Ruby caught her just in time, stopping her from falling.

"Why are you yelling? If you want a good life, calm down!"

"Let go of me! Let go! You're filthy!" Kate shouted, and her voice shook agitatedly.

Before she could say another word, a sharp slap landed on her face.

"Oh, I'm filthy? And what about what you did abroad? You didn't seem to mind the dirt then! If James hadn't picked us up last night, we'd still be stuck in that mess. Pull yourself together!"

Kate stood frozen, stunned by Ruby's words.

"Your father threw me out in the pouring rain. Why should I stay faithful and protect a marriage he had already destroyed? My dear daughter, it's time to grow up!"

"Y-You two have been together for a long time, haven't you?"

Ruby ignored the question. "This has nothing to do with you. What do you want from me?"

She pulled her silk robe tighter, walked to the living room sofa, and lit a cigarette.

Kate stared at her, unable to recognize the woman in front of her.

She had always seen her mother as the dignified, elegant Mrs. Bently—respected and refined.

Now, she was someone who smoked, drank, and acted shamelessly.

She couldn't accept it!

"Tell me the truth, Mom. Am I really my father's biological daughter?"

"Of course you are! Whether he wants you or not, you're still the Bently family's only heir. Don't worry, my dear. I'll make sure you get everything you want."

"But you..."

"My life is none of your business."

"Okay."

After calming down, Kate realized she had no one else to rely on but her mother.

She had no choice but to endure it, even if she wasn't happy about it.

"Can you tell me why you were looking for me earlier?"

"I want you to help me kill Chantelle. Ever since she appeared, everything has gone wrong for me. I just know that once she's gone, things will get better!"

"I'm already handling this family matter for you, but it's not going as planned. Get some rest. I'll let you know when I have good news."

"Mom, can you really help me get rid of Chantelle?"

"Of course, my dear. Anyone who stands in your way doesn't deserve to live."
