Chapter 124 - 124: I Lied To You

Chantelle dreaded the thought of Daniel taking Kane—the only light in her life—as revenge.

She wasn't just losing her mind; her emotions were slipping too. Overwhelmed, her vision blurred.

No! She couldn't afford to break down now. Even if it cost her everything, she had to find Kane and bring him home.

Gritting her teeth, she tightened her grip on the steering wheel and pushed forward. But no matter how hard she tried, the storm inside her wouldn't disappear. Her breath came in shallow gasps, and she struggled to calm herself at this moment.

She gasped for air. Sweat dripped down her forehead, and her face turned pale.

Chantelle's body weakened. Her car veered across the highway, narrowly missing other vehicles.

Just before she lost consciousness, her phone rang in her pocket.

With one hand on the wheel, she shakily reached for it. Her fingers fumbled as she struggled to unlock and answer the call.

Her vision was too blurry to see who was on the other end.

"Did you feel the heartache?" a husky voice came through the phone.

Gripping onto the lifeline, Chantelle slammed the brakes and pulled over to the side of the road.

Still clutching the phone, she struggled to open the door and collapsed onto the ground. The sharp pain slowly pulled her back to reality.

"Daniel, where did you take Kane?"

"I asked you—did you feel the heartache when you couldn't find him?"

"Yes, I'm heartbroken. Please, just give Kane back to me. I lied to you, but it has nothing to do with him."

"So, you do feel the pain when your child is taken away. What makes you think I wouldn't feel the same when you took mine?"

"I..." Chantelle was at a loss for words.

She realized this was Daniel's way of getting revenge.

He was punishing her for disappearing with the children, erasing them from his world.

"They are my children too. Did you really think I wouldn't feel anything when they were taken from me? Were you planning to hide this forever? Were you trying to make me live with this regret for the rest of my life?"

If Kane hadn't given himself away, Daniel might have never known about his other son. Chantelle could have taken the children far, far away.

On the other end, Chantelle lay on the ground, listening to Daniel's accusations. A sharp pain piled up in her chest.

It felt like a knife had pierced her heart.

She had never considered what losing a child meant to Daniel. She had assumed he wouldn't care—after all, he hadn't cared about their lives back then.

"I'm sorry, Daniel. I made a mistake. Please... have mercy..."

Her vision blurred. Her body weakened. Before she could finish her sentence, she lost consciousness.

Daniel was at Western Hill Villa.

He only wanted to scare Chantelle. If she admitted her mistake and told him where Rai was, he could let it go.

But something felt off. Her voice grew weak and trailed off at the end.

Daniel's chest tightened.

Upstairs, Kane was munching on snacks and playing the hacker game his dad had installed.

Suddenly, someone grabbed him, shoved him into a car, and sped away.

Oh, things were getting intense.

"Daddy, where are we going now?"

A cold gust of wind jolted Chantelle awake.

A sharp sting in her arm made her turn her head.

She saw a man in black, wearing a cap, injecting something into her.

The shock jolted Chantelle awake.

She tried to push him away, but that's when she realized she was tied to a chair.

"Who are you? What are you doing?"

"Oh, you're awake." The man in black pushed the syringe to the end, then stood up and looked at her. His tone carried a hint of mockery.

Her mind raced back to that day on the hair-pinned road.

"Are you the one who came after me back then?"

The driver of the black sedan had worn the same outfit.

"My, oh my. You have a good memory."

His response made Chantelle's heart sink.

She never expected him to survive the crash, let alone track her down so quickly.

Her eyes darted around, trying to figure out where she was.

The cold wind cut through her skin, and there was nothing around for shelter.

No buildings, hills, or trees were in sight.

Chantelle quickly realized she was on a rooftop.

"What do you want? What did you inject into me?"

Chantelle couldn't figure out his intentions. If he wanted her dead, he could have done it while she was unconscious.

Unless she was just a pawn in a bigger plan.

"Don't worry. I don't want to kill you—at least not yet. As much as I hate to admit it, I just saved you."

He slipped the syringe into his backpack, then pulled up a chair and sat beside her.

"Save me? Don't flatter yourself. That's a fancy way of dressing up a kidnapping. Are you trying to sound sophisticated?"

Chantelle snapped at him.

"You're ungrateful, aren't you? I bet you've been feeling sick a lot lately."

Chantelle's eyes widened in surprise.

"Okay. Look at the camera. Let's take a video."

He grabbed his phone, opened the camera app, and pulled her into the frame.

Seeing her shocked expression on the screen, he chuckled and tapped pause.

"Don't look so gloomy. It won't suit you."

Unhappy with the video, the man in black deleted it and prepared to record again.

"How do you know I've been sick a lot lately? Who are you?"

Chantelle shook off her shock and asked him.

"I have a different face now. How did you recognize me?"

"There's nothing in the world I don't know. And your little disguise? Ha, that won't fool me."

A confident smile flashed across the man's face before adjusting the camera for a better angle.

Chantelle stared at him while thoughts ran through her head.

Since the injection, the tightness in her chest had suddenly disappeared. She felt lighter, not poisoned. But how did this man know so much about her?

As she tried to piece it together, a chill crept over her.

"Are you one of Lone Wolf's men?"

"I guess you could say that."

The man in black answered her directly. He had no intention of hiding his identity.

"Come on, pretty lady. Let's get this over with. Once we finish the video, I can use it to threaten Daniel with your life."
