Chapter 116 - 116: You Must Be Hungry

After Philip left, only Daniel and Chantelle remained in the living room.

For a moment, the silence felt awkward.

"It's not funny, Daniel. Don't ever joke like that again."

"One day, you'll find out if I'm serious or not."

"You..." Chantelle was ready to argue, but her stomach growled, making her embarrassed.

"You must be hungry. I'll make you another omelet." Daniel smiled and patted her head before walking into the elevator.

Chantelle felt completely torn inside.

Meanwhile, Ruby returned to the villa on the outskirts early in the morning after visiting James.

Roman threw a glass at her the moment she entered the living room. It barely missed the doorway.

"What's wrong, Roman?" Ruby dodged the glass and walked toward him, walking carefully over the broken shards.

She still kept some distance and instinctively stayed on guard.

"You finally decided to come back? Where were you all night?"

"Where else would I be? I was handling our daughter's affairs. Why are you so angry this early in the morning?"

Ruby's tone carried a hint of playfulness.

"How dare you mention that woman!" Roman snapped. "She went on a date with Jerry yesterday and cut off all contact after leaving. She hasn't answered calls or replied to messages. She's been missing all night! Where is she? Call her right now! I need an explanation!"

"The investment funds she promised yesterday still haven't arrived! Not a single penny!"

Roman was fuming. He had spent so much time and effort raising her, yet she turned out to be such a disappointment. What a disaster!

He had stayed up all night and was excited at the thought of getting the investment money soon.

"Don't worry, Roman. I'll call Kate right now." Ruby understood his frustration. His anger was only because the investment funds hadn't arrived.

Kate was always reckless. Even if she was enjoying her time with Jerry, she should still answer calls from home.

Instantly, Ruby searched for Kate's number and dialed.

"Sorry, the number you dialed is not in service..."

Her heart pounded as she listened to the recorded message.

Ruby was aware that Kate would never turn off her phone. Something was wrong.

"Did you reach her or not? Why are you hesitating?" Roman asked impatiently.

His face was tense, but he still hoped Ruby would manage to talk to Kate. He needed her to ask when Jerry's money would arrive.

Bently Corporation's financial crisis was getting worse. He couldn't wait any longer.

"Her phone is off... Kate never turns it off, Roman. Do you think something happened?" Ruby muttered, gripping the phone tightly.

"What? It's off? How could she do that?! What is she trying to do? That she doesn't want to get the funds for me?"

Realizing Kate had turned off her phone, Roman lunged forward and grabbed Ruby's phone from her hand.

He was about to throw it in frustration, but Ruby reacted quickly. She managed to stop him and take her phone back before any damage was done.

James had bought the phone for her. With money being tight, she couldn't let Roman break it. If James found out, he'd be upset.

"Don't worry, Roman. Maybe Kate was out late with Jerry and her phone died. Oh, right! I got Jerry's number from Kate the other day. Do you want me to call him instead?"

Ruby glanced at Roman, who was still flustered. She had to think fast. She needed a new plan to calm him down.

"You think you're the only one with Jerry's number? I've already called. His phone is off too!"

That fool. Was he trying to take his daughter without paying up?

Roman thought furiously as he clenched his teeth.

"Hey! It finally connected! Jerry turned his phone on, Roman!"

"Who is this? It's too early. I'm still sleeping," Jerry answered groggily on the third call.

"Jerry, it's me. I'm Kate's mother. Did I wake you up? I'm really sorry..." Ruby forced a smile as she spoke.

Roman rushed over as soon as he heard Jerry pick up the call. He gestured at Ruby, signaling her to ask about the investment fund.

"Kate's mother? Oh, Auntie Ruby, what's wrong?"

Jerry had drunk too much last night and passed out on the street. His family had picked him up, but he had only just woken up and was still dizzy.

When he realized it was Kate's mother, he sat up straight in bed out of respect.

"It's like this, Jerry. Kate didn't come home last night, and we can't reach her. I was wondering if she's with you," Ruby asked carefully, keeping her tone as gentle as possible.

"Kate? No. My butler told me they found me alone on the side of the road yesterday!"

"Aunt Ruby, you need to talk to Kate about this. I'm her man. How could she just leave me there in the middle of the night and run off? What if I had frozen out there?"

Jerry scratched his head, sounding annoyed as he recalled last night's event.

"Huh? So Kate isn't with you? Then where did she go?"

"Kate cares about you. She wouldn't have just left you alone like that. Are you sure there's no misunderstanding, Jerry? What if something happened to her?"

Ruby spoke up right away about her worry. She had a bad feeling about this.

"Don't worry, Auntie Ruby! I'll go find her right now!"

Jerry was now fully awake. Kate cared about him too much to just leave him behind. Something must have happened.

With that thought, he jumped out of bed, grabbed a random shirt, and got ready to leave. But as he reached the door, he realized it was locked.

"Hey! Who locked this door? Open it now!"

He banged on the door, feeling annoyed.

Ruby heard the loud noise over the phone. Something didn't feel right.

Ruby's heart turned cold.

Jerry seemed to be locked up again. If that was the case, then what about Kate...?

As she was lost in thought, the villa's door suddenly swung open from the outside.

A sophisticated, elegant woman entered the room, flanked by several bodyguards. Her presence was commanding and unmistakably grand.

Ruby held her phone tightly, stunned by the sight before her.

She recognized the woman immediately. She was both admired and disliked among the wealthy elite. More importantly, she was the head of the Lowe family and Jerry's mother—Susan Lowe.

Mrs. Lowe wasn't just beautiful and elegant. She was also incredibly capable.

Since taking over the family business, she has expanded its reach nearly tenfold. Her success earned her a reputation as a powerful woman with unmatched beauty and intelligence.
