Chapter 67: Kynar Voss 2

Kynar Voss POV (continued)

When I returned to my homeland, a strange sense of belonging washed over me.

I had arrived at Imkansia village.

Normally, as the head of the Inquisition, I rarely took part in missions personally.

But this time, it was the Cardinal’s direct order.

Even I didn’t understand why.

Still, the moment I entered the village... something felt off.

Everyone looked out for one another.

There wasn’t a single homeless person.

Though the Sylvarion Empire took taxes, they weren’t as crushing as in other regions.

Here it was thirty percent.

In the Valentine Empire, it was fifty.

When I asked where the village chief lived, everyone pointed me in the same direction.

I walked slowly toward the house.

On the way, a girl suddenly crashed into me.

I didn’t move an inch, but she fell flat on her backside.

Everyone turned to stare.

Damn it!

This is going to draw way too much attention and make the mission harder.

"Sorry, mister!" the girl said.

I extended my hand. "Watch where you’re going, kid."

She grabbed it and pulled herself up, brushing the dust off her clothes.

"Hmm... I’ve never seen you around here, mister."

Being called "mister" pisses me off!!

"Well, you’re right. I’m looking for the village chief’s house," I said.

The girl’s eyes widened.

She had black hair and brown eyes—odd, since this was an elf village and most had blonde hair and blue eyes.

She giggled.

"This must be fate! I’m Sarah, the village chief’s daughter!" She pointed at herself proudly.

I let out a small laugh.

If I’d ever had a child with my wife...

Would she have been this cute?

"I’m Sarah Adams. I’m heading to the market. Help me carry stuff, then we’ll go together!" She grabbed my hand and dragged me through the streets.

We bought vegetables and all sorts of things.

The girl was adorable, but the Adams family was on the list of demon god worshippers, so I couldn’t let my guard down.

She had such a delicate frame.

I’d have to apologize to Samira, my wife.

I already hated myself for the journey here.

I never should have hit her.

"Come on, mister! By the way, why are you looking for my dad?"

"I’m from the Church. I need to speak with your father," I said.

The girl’s eyes grew huge. "Really? I believe in Goddess Artemis!" She pointed at herself again.

The sun was slowly setting.

My expression darkened. Outside the Submission faith, other religions weren’t enemies, but we still showed respect—and expected it in return.

This girl was bold. "I’m a cleric of the Submission faith. It’s nothing important—"

"Last year, Cardinal Joshua came here. He seemed like a good man, too."

What?

Something like that happened?

Is that why I was sent?

Why?

Night fell as we reached the Adams family home.

It was a modest two-story house.

Bigger and taller than the others in the village, but still humble compared to chiefs in other regions.

The door opened.

"Sarah, you’re finally back," a woman said.

She looked just like Sarah.

"Who are you?"

Damn, this woman is harsh.

"Kynar Voss, Inquisition," I said.

The woman’s eyes widened.

Sarah stood there, confused. "Mister... Inquisition?"

"Sarah, come here right now!" her mother snapped.

She ran to her mother’s side.

"We have nothing to say to you."

She slammed the door in my face.

That was highly suspicious.

They must have realized why I was here.

I sighed.

"Deus vult."

I kicked the door down.

I heard running upstairs.

"William, we have to escape now!" I slowly started walking through the house.

My heavy steps echoed; they could hear me.

"What are you talking about, woman? Are you insane? The man just broke down the door!" the man roared.

I climbed the stairs.

There was no little girl in sight, just two elves standing before me.

One was William, the other was the woman named Annabelle.

The file said the entire family was to be eliminated.

But something was off.

My wife had claimed Cardinal Joshua was a demon god worshipper.

And Joshua had been here a year ago.

While I was thinking, a plate flew at me and shattered.

"Stay away!"

The woman was screaming.

"Calm down, Annabelle!"

William stood in front of me.

"What do you want, sir?"

I can’t be swayed by attitudes like this.

I grabbed the man by the collar and slammed him against the wall.

Just a scare—nothing more than a little pain.

"Tell me—are you a demon god worshipper?"

"No..." William said.

I felt Annabelle behind me, trying to pull me away.

I cast a light divine spell, and she flew to the other side of the room.

William screamed, but the interrogation was on.

She hit the floor.

I kicked William in the face. "TALK!"

"I swear I’m not!! The demon god is a son of a bitch, I swear it wasn’t me!" William said, trembling.

He cursed the demon god.

That was extremely suspicious.

I turned to the woman.

"What about you?"

The woman froze.

William stood up.

"Please don’t touch my wife!" William was shouting.

I was used to scenes like this.

Those who show sympathy to demon god worshippers are traitors.

That’s the simplest truth.

"Explain what’s going on, or I’ll kill everyone here!"

I slowly righted the overturned table, and they sat in the chairs.

I was fully in interrogation mode.

"When Cardinal Joshua came to our village, people slowly started disappearing. We didn’t know why, but I suspected him."

I didn’t interrupt William.

"But when I followed him deep into the forest... what I saw was horrifying. He was sacrificing elves in a ritual..."

I slammed the table.

"Nonsense! Are you slandering a cardinal?"

William raised his hand. "I swear on the World Tree."

This—this oath was sacred for elves.

This man had just given the greatest proof that he was telling the truth.

"Did your wife know about this?" I fixed my eyes on Annabelle.

There was something about this woman. "My wife was among the kidnapped and was used as a vessel by demon god worshippers. Right now, she’s a vessel for one of the 73 demons."

"I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry," Annabelle kept repeating.

Annabelle could not be allowed to live.

But then a door opened, and the child came out.

Sarah’s eyes were wide.

"Mom... why didn’t you tell me?"

Annabelle and William were silent.

I sighed.

Bam...

Something shot into the air.

Time felt frozen.

"Annabelle," William said, then pointed to his own neck.

He understood what I was about to do.

He had decided to sacrifice himself for his daughter Sarah’s future.

Because as long as the two of them were alive, the entire village would be destroyed, and their daughter’s life afterward would be hell.

I drew my sword again, and with one swing, his head flew.

Everything happened so fast that there was no time to process.

Sarah stood there on the floor.

"Little girl, your family is gone. But know this—if they had lived, they would have suffered far more. I gave them a quick death."

Sarah’s eyes were empty. "Mom was a vessel... why?"

"When someone is used as a vessel, there’s no coming back. Your mother’s feelings toward you were good. Let me guess—she wasn’t as kind to others anymore and was acting aggressively."

Sarah just stared at me, then stood up and walked to the stairs.

For God’s sake, what is she doing?

There was a pool of blood on the floor.

Two heads lay facing each other, smiling.

I sighed.

My heart hurt.

I would get this child out of this dump and deal with Cardinal Joshua.

She went up to the roof, and there the little girl Sarah stood at the edge, ready to jump.

No, I hope she doesn’t do what I think she will.

"Mister, why did you do that? Was there no other choice?"

"I had to. Otherwise, your family would have suffered more, and you would have been sold as a slave. Your father sacrificed himself for you."

"I never wanted this! What am I supposed to do without my family?" Tears streamed from Sarah’s eyes, but they were still empty.

She had lost her reason to live.

"Girl, I’ll become your family and raise you. When you grow up, you can kill me, and I’ll help you take Cardinal Joshua’s head—the one who did this to your mother," I said.

Sarah laughed like a maniac. "HAHAHAHAHA IDIOT! WHAT’S THE POINT? IF MY FAMILY WON’T COME BACK, WHAT’S THE POINT?" she screamed.

Then she calmed. "You knew we were innocent from the beginning," she said, and threw herself off.

Fuck!

I lunged forward with all my speed, but I couldn’t catch her.

I looked down.

There was a pool of blood...

The girl committed suicide.

No, no, this can’t be.

Why? Damn it, I didn’t listen to my wife, and this happened.

I had gone blind.

My love for God had blinded me.

Damn it.

Even though I hadn’t known the girl long, she really was innocent.

A family that raised a girl like her couldn’t be evil.

My intention was only to interrogate, and we’re forced to use force.

But Annabelle, being a vessel for one of the 73 demons, left no way out.

The whole family would be wiped out, and this village would probably be destroyed too.

The little girl’s death would have been a minor issue.

That’s why I killed Annabelle.

I gave William a choice, and he understood.

He pointed to his neck for his daughter.

At least I could have kept the girl alive.

But she committed suicide right in front of my eyes.

That day, I regretted everything.

I wish that day had never happened...
