Chapter 65: Interrogation: Saintess Maria

Raul POV.

I’m standing in a room with Saintess Maria.

This is an interrogation room.

I had to sacrifice a few things to bring the saintess here.

"You’ll answer my three questions, right?" Maria asked.

Because I gave her a 3-question to ask me as a reward.

"Yes, I keep my word. I’ll tell you whatever you want."

"Perfect. I think I already know what you want to ask."

I nodded.

"Yes. Why did Kynar Voss leave the Inquisition?"

Maria sighed. "It happened before I became saintess. Back then, a cardinal from the Submission faith was in charge. Kynar was extremely fanatical at the time..."

"Is loving God a bad thing?" I asked.

Maria shook her head. "No, but when anything becomes an obsession, it quickly turns to shit. The cardinal... how should I put it..."

"Corrupted."

Maria lowered her head. "Yes. I’m ashamed, but the incident was this: Kynar was sent on a secret mission one day. I don’t know the details."

She took a sip of the tea in front of her.

After all, we had to treat the saintess well here; otherwise, while the academy was already dealing with sanctions, sanctions from the Holy Church would definitely cause far more damage.

"What I know isn’t very detailed, but Kynar realized he had killed an innocent person. A fifteen-year-old girl. The mission was to neutralize demon god worshippers."

"Hmm, things must have gone to shit," I thought to myself.

Maria looked sad. "During that mission, Kynar chased the girl to the roof of a building. Her family had been wiped out. What they talked about is still unknown, but after being cornered on the roof, the girl made a choice. She committed suicide..."

"The reason for the suicide..."

"Yes. The girl’s family had been killed in front of her. Kynar did it. He must have said something to her on the roof. In the mission report, Kynar stated the girl was innocent and vetoed the church."

Ah, things are really shitty.

I can kind of understand. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

Kynar probably killed the girl’s family and gave her a chance to escape.

That’s not mercy.

Inquisitors give false hope to their target, let them run, then drive them to despair.

"So we’ll never know for sure, but it was the cardinal’s fault. Because the real demon god worshipper was the cardinal."

Maria looked extremely unhappy and had just revealed one of the church’s biggest secrets.

Maybe out of pity for Kynar.

Or maybe it was sincerity toward me.

But I know she’s not lying.

Lying in front of me would just be stupid.

Even if the saintess didn’t know, if she lied, I wouldn’t hesitate to beat her.

"I understand. Now, about Seraphine. Did you tell her?"

"What does that have to do with our topic?" Maria said and looked into my eyes.

She’s probably pissed off.

I leaned back in my chair.

"Just something I want to know. It’s related to our topic."

"One day, Seraphine came to me. It was for a Latin sentence translation. She didn’t ask for anything else."

So it wasn’t the saintess.

Damn, why is everything so complicated?

"Got it. You can ask your questions."

"Are you a saint?"

The question was so sudden it made me sit up straight. "Why do you think that?"

"Because a very small amount of divinity similar to angels is leaking from you right now. Even if you hide it, it sometimes unconsciously leaks. Talking to angels is something only saints can do."

Gabriel stepped out of me. "No, he is not a saint."

Fuck, Gabriel, what are you doing...

Maria’s eyes widened as if her tongue had been cut out.

She stood up and knelt. "Archangel, I greet you."

"Yes, yes. Anyway, watching over this kid is God’s command. Understood?" Gabriel said.

Her voice was neither gentle nor too harsh.

It was simply devoid of emotion.

Maria nodded. "Understood."

"Good." Gabriel went back inside me.

Maria sat down again, but this time her eyes were sparkling as she looked at me.

"So, did you kill Andras?" Maria asked, her face completely serious again.

She’s really trying to corner me. "Yes, it was me."

"I see. Next question. Are you the Entity?"

I slowly leaned on the table, and she did the same.

We looked into each other’s eyes, and it felt like fire would spark. "Are you sure you want to know?"

"Yes," she said, as if she wouldn’t back down.

I give up.

This girl is smart and has already got her answer.

I nodded.

She stood up. "I know I have no right to ask, but finding out who killed Kynar Voss should be easy. Why don’t you just say it?"

Her image fell in my eyes.

Idiot, is that really what she asked?

"If I said the killer without evidence, who would believe me except those who know my identity?"

Maria slammed the table. "Damn it, now I remember!"

"What happened?" Did this woman lose her mind?

"The girl who committed suicide because of Kynar Voss. Her last words were, ’You knew we were innocent.’ It was written in a small part of the report, and I just remembered what the girl said."

Ahhhhh, how do you miss such an important detail, you idiot?

And she tried to change the subject, but I’m not stupid.

"I see," I said, stood up, and opened the door.

Maria slowly walked forward. "If you tell anyone my identity, I’ll take your soul and give you a torture session."

"So you’d kill me? I thought you made contracts with the people you killed?"

"Yes, but they’re for playing with victims. If someone tried to save someone I see as bad, I wouldn’t hesitate to take theirs without a contract."

Maria nodded and quickly left.

Like a bull trying to escape being sacrificed.

The girl’s rationality didn’t work in front of Raul.

Raul sighed and sat at the table.

He closed his eyes.

He entered the mind library, and the magnificent library greeted him again.

"Information about Kynar Voss’s life. He was a 6th-tier inquisitor."

A book appeared in Raul’s hand.

It said "The Life of Kynar Voss" on it.

After learning the truth, he could slowly search for evidence.

Because this game of tag was starting to annoy him.

He began reading the book...
