Mommy Wolf: Raise A Cub, Claimed By His Beast Daddy-Chapter 81: A Wise King
Sisi smiled sweetly, though the smile didn’t reach her eyes.
"Is that so? Then I am honored to be the first, Your Majesty. It seems your luck is rather poor, to meet me is truly a misfortune."
"You—!"Kael was so enraged that he became speechless.
This woman always had something to say and refused to show even a hint of fear in front of him. Even his suppressive aura didn’t work on her, which only made him angrier.
"Daddy! I said stop hurting Sisi!" Jojo yelled at the top of his lungs, but his demon daddy refused to listen. In desperation, Jojo picked up a rock and hurled it at Kael’s head.
Kael merely tilted his head when the rock struck him. It didn’t hurt, but it did divert his attention.
He glared at his son, his crimson eyes glowing with malice, and the little wolf cub froze instantly in fear.
Sisi’s smile vanished at the sight.
"Didn’t I tell you not to scare your own son?" she said coldly. "If you keep doing that, Jojo may develop deep fear toward you as he grows older."
"You have no right to lecture me after what you’ve done, you witch!" Kael snarled as he grabbed Sisi by the neck and slammed her harder against the tree bark.
Sisi coughed as his fingers tightened, but she maintained her mocking gaze.
"Tell... me... Kael," she rasped, "is this... the way of a wise king... to deliver... judgment? You are accusing me... without evidence..."
"Accusing? Hah!" Kael scoffed. "You drugged the venison I gave you with some potent sleeping drug, causing my subordinates to fall into deep sleep. Then you freed that bastard tiger by cutting his rope with a dagger! What more evidence do you need?!"
Everything Kael said was absolutely correct.
But Sisi had prepared for this, even if her method of freeing Marik was obvious.
She was gambling with her life, because if Kael was truly an unreasonable king, then all her planning would be meaningless, and she would die here.
Yet she still smiled, and that tranquility startled Kael.
She was standing at death’s door, yet her composure was unwavering.
Witnessing her calmness made him loosen his grip, just enough for her to breathe.
"If you’re so certain that I did it," Sisi said calmly, "Then show me the proof."
"What are you—"
"I said, show me the proof," she interrupted. "Where is the sleeping drug you claim I used? If it was in the meat, then show it to me. And where is the dagger I supposedly used to cut Marik’s rope? He could have used his own claws. His claws are razor-sharp, after all."
Kael’s thoughts churned.
His gaze dropped to the pouch at her waist. It was stuffed with mushrooms of various shapes and colors, the pouch was far too full to conceal a dagger.
Just as she claimed, she had prepared thoroughly.
She had buried both the small jar of Titin mushroom powder and the dagger and covered the mound with snow, making them impossible to find. So Kael truly had no hard evidence to pin her down.
"Grishaw said he fell into deep sleep after eating the venison you gave him!" Kael accused.
"And isn’t that simply a sign of overeating?" Sisi giggled lightly. "You gave me a very large portion, after all."
She tilted her head."And don’t blame your subordinates for Marik’s escape. I’m sure they did their absolute best. It’s just that... something happened, and he got away."
Her eyes sharpened."You have no one to blame but yourself, Kael. You were so blinded by grudge that you chose to torture him instead of killing him outright last night. That was a fatal oversight, no? Didn’t you teach Jojo that enemies must be eliminated before they become future threats?"
"Y-yes! Daddy, you shouldn’t blame Sisi!" Jojo cried out. "She didn’t do anything wrong!"
He didn’t truly understand how Uncle Marik had escaped. But he believed, with all his heart, that Sisi wouldn’t do anything wrong.
It was the first time a woman had rendered Kael completely speechless, so much so that he felt as though he were making a fool of himself.
The more she spoke, the angrier he became.
Veins bulged at his temples as fury surged through him.
He tightened his grip on her neck once more, choking her until her life felt as though it were lodged in her throat and it wouldn’t take long before she lost her last breath.
Yet even then, Sisi showed no fear.
"So... you’re just... an unreasonable beast—uhk!" Sisi mocked him through gasping breaths. "Then... kill me, oh wise king... for I am... innocent!"
Her voice trembled as she glanced at Jojo who was crying, "But... I beg you... don’t—urk—k-kill me... in front of Jojo!"
"SISI!" Jojo screamed. He clawed desperately at Kael’s thigh, tears streaming down his face. "Let go of Sisi, you demon! Wuu... waaah!! You’re not my Daddy! You’re a demon! A DEMONNN!! WAAAAH!!"
Kael was seeing red, and he had been ready to kill her, until her plea struck him like a dagger to the conscience.
As enraged and unreasonable as he was, he knew she was right.
Watching Sisi die at his father’s hands would scar Jojo’s heart forever.
Then, another wave of guilt washed over his rage when Jojo cried so loudly and desperately, even claiming that he wasn’t his father.
At last, he released her and stepped back.
Sisi collapsed to the ground, coughing violently as she gulped in air. For a moment, she truly believed she was about to die.
"SISI!" Jojo ran to her side, patting her back clumsily, just as she always did for him. "A-are you okay? Your neck is so red!"
"I-I’m fine," Sisi said softly, wiping her lips as she forced a smile.
Seeing her like this only enraged Jojo further.
He glared at Kael, who stood apart with his arms crossed and his expression cold.
"You should be grateful I didn’t kill her," Kael said flatly.
"You demon! I—I hate—"
Sisi quickly covered Jojo’s mouth before the boy finished his sentence.
"Don’t say that, Jojo," she said gently. "He’s still your father. It’s disrespectful."
