Mommy Wolf: Raise A Cub, Claimed By His Beast Daddy-Chapter 67: Little Wolf’s Promise
Kael raised his brows. "And why should I do that? She is my enemy."
The little wolf was troubled. Of course, he knew they were enemies, but if he couldn’t ask for help, then how was he supposed to save Sisi from dying? He couldn’t even lift her up!
"M-my Daddy said that we should help others," Jojo said softly. "So... you should help too."
"I never taught you to help your enemy," Kael replied coldly. "Didn’t I tell you to make sure your enemy is dead before moving on? That will save us a lot of trouble."
"But Sisi is not an enemy!" Jojo snapped, then froze.
He realized he wasn’t facing his father, but a demon wearing his father’s face. He couldn’t insist the way he used to.
The boy thought hard, then finally compromised.
"D-Demon Daddy... if you help Sisi stay warm, then Jojo... uhm... Jojo will hunt for you every day! I promise!"
Jojo didn’t know what other skills he had besides hunting. His father had always said that the worth of a male beastman was measured by his ability to hunt, because it meant he could provide for his mate and their offspring.
So Jojo believed that by hunting every day for this crimson-eyed demon, he could save Sisi from certain death.
Kael was genuinely surprised.
Once again, Jojo showed behavior that hadn’t existed before their separation.
Despite being kind, Jojo had always been somewhat selfish. He refused to share food and threw tantrums when he didn’t get what he wanted. Kael usually gave in, as it was hard enough surviving while constantly being hunted by their enemies, and listening to tantrums only gave him headaches.
But this Jojo... was willing to make a difficult promise just to save this witch.
Kael’s gaze drifted to the unconscious woman lying on the snow, his expression conflicted.
’What did she teach my son? How could he change this much in such a short time?’
It was a good change, Kael wasn’t muddle-headed enough not to admit that. But it also made him more wary. Anyone who could influence Jojo so deeply was dangerous in his eyes.
But in the end, he agreed.
"That’s a promise, boy," Kael said sternly. "You will hunt every single day for me. And you will call me Daddy. What’s with this ’Demon Daddy’ nonsense? I am your father."
Jojo was too worried about Sisi to argue. He nodded quickly.
After all, Sisi once told him that honesty was important when dealing with good people, but this crimson-eyed demon wasn’t good. So he didn’t need to be honest.
With a sigh, Kael lifted Jojo in one arm and Sisi in the other, holding them both securely. He pressed Sisi closer to his chest, ensuring she absorbed the warmth from his body as he noticed that her temperature was dangerously low.
Kael scanned the surroundings. His crimson eyes glinted as he detected a cave nearby, warmed by the body heat of an animal inside, likely a hibernating bear.
He rushed to the cave, placed Sisi and Jojo near the entrance, stepped inside, then emerged five seconds later dragging out a dead bear. He tossed the corpse aside.
After settling them inside, he gathered branches and prepared a fire.
"D-Demon Daddy—ah! I-I mean, Daddy!" Jojo corrected himself quickly. "Don’t worry! Sisi taught me how to make fire with matches!"
He retrieved a match from Sisi’s leather pouch and started the fire himself.
Kael stood near the entrance, arms crossed, watching as Jojo carefully removed Sisi’s gloves and held her hands near the fire. Whenever she leaned too close, Jojo panicked and pulled her back to keep her from getting burned.
It was... amusing.
Kael’s lips twitched, and a faint smile formed.
"Stay here, Jojo. I need to save Grishaw, the eagle. I can’t afford to lose a capable subordinate."
"Oh, that eagle!" Jojo remembered the scream. "He’s stuck in a tree, Daddy! I think it’s not far from where you met us!"
"Good. Stay put and keep warm."
"Okay!"
As Kael left the cave, Jojo finally let out a shaky sigh. His eyes were swollen from crying and exhaustion weighing on him, but he kept his eyes open. He dared not to fall asleep, at least until Sisi woke up first.
He watched as Sisi’s color slowly returned, her cheeks tinged faintly red, no longer deathly pale.
"I’m sorry, Sisi," he whispered. "I... I don’t know if he’s my Daddy or a demon wearing Daddy’s face. But please trust Jojo, okay? I never lie when I say my Daddy is very gentle..."
*
Kael found Grishaw bound near the top of a tree, exactly as Jojo had described. He leapt onto a branch and frowned down at him.
Grishaw, who had resigned himself to freezing to death, wasn’t sure whether he should feel relieved or humiliated to be rescued under such circumstances.
"My King... that woman—"
"—is a witch. I know," Kael interrupted as he tore apart the vines binding Grishaw. "I never expected my son to be entangled with a witch. At least he’s alive, and not sacrificed for her strange powers."
"What should we do next, My King?" Grishaw asked. "Should I kill her?"
"That’s not possible," Kael replied grimly. "My son has been bewitched. He even sees her as his—"
He stopped himself before saying mother.
Jojo didn’t need a mother. Since his fated mate was gone, it was better for him to grow up with a strong father alone. In fact, Kael was convinced that Jojo did not need a mother at all while growing up.
"I’ll deal with her myself," Kael said. "You, retrieve your subordinate. He passed out near that tree."
He paused, then added coldly, "Bring that damned tiger. I still intend to execute him myself and hang his head and hide in front of the kingdom’s gate. He’ll serve as an example to anyone who dares oppose me."
"And Meet me at the cave nearby. You’ll find me by following my aura," Kael added before leaping out of the branch.
"Yes, My King!"
