Modern World Warlock-Chapter 360: The Dragon King of Hell
While Megan's group retreated to the southern checkpoint, they had to stop for a moment when they sensed the whole environment around them rumbling.
A few seconds later, a massive bone dragon crashed through a building with its back and landed on an adjacent street.
"What now…?" Alice asked herself.
Following the dragon, they saw the figure of a buff man with long hair hovering in the air before plummeting down towards the dragon's location at high speeds.
"Shit, move!" Alice shouted, prompting the group to jump back as a massive piece of debris rained down upon them.
The impact was so loud that both Megan and Zac reopened their eyes, though they still had trouble moving their bodies.
Still, they could see a lone man holding the dragon's snout with both arms as if he were wrestling with the beast, and as the man's grip tightened, his fingers dug into the monster's bony exterior as his arms extruded his veins.
"Raaaaaahhhh!" The mysterious man let out a warcry while lifting the massive dragon's body from the head, dropping it back with a suplex that utterly destroyed the street.
As the dust and smoke dissipated, the group stood still for a brief second, wondering if the man was on their side.
"Hmm?" The long-haired man turned and looked at the group standing over a hundred meters away, slightly shocked at the sight.
Alice prepared herself to protect her team, but she knew that they were too weak to keep fighting. Nevertheless, she would try her best.
When the man began to saunter towards the group with a somewhat menacing pose, Alice placed her hand on the hilt of her sword.
Before she could draw her weapon, the man was standing before her, allowing her to look at him in more detail.
The man was at least 2.5 meters tall (8 feet). His long, disheveled dark hair looked like a lion's mane, his pupils were sharp like a cat's, and the two horns on his head were a clear feature of demons.
For a second, Alice felt her breath escaping her body, trying her best to stand tall before her opponent, but the pressure extruding from his presence and her own wounds made it difficult.
Still, while the man was certainly intimidating, he just kept staring at the group with a thoughtful expression.
"I see. I understand…" The man muttered before getting on one knee before Alice.
The ex-detective was stunned by confusion, and only after the man kneeled was she able to speak up. "Who the hell are you?" she asked.
"My name is Varamor. The Dragon King of Hell…" he replied, looking up at Alice's eyes.
Megan, who was barely conscious, asked in a low volume if Dante had summoned him, which Varamor confirmed, as he was tasked with killing the pesky bone dragon.
However, Varamor was mainly curious to know why Zac, Megan, and Alice 'smelled' like his master, explaining that he could sense a small part of him inside all of them.
Alice explained that they had a contract with Dante to awaken their powers, and Varamor seemed a bit surprised when he heard that. Still, he said that he would lend his support to the group as he couldn't allow any of Dante's allies to die.
Relishing the opportunity, Alice instantly asked for help carrying the wounded. Only Alice, Ezekiel, June, and the two cyborgs were able to walk, so carrying Zac, Megan, Vesnia, and Isidor back to the checkpoint was a slow process for them.
Fortunately, Varamor picked up the two Death Knights on his shoulders and said that he would diligently follow them to a safe area.
"What about the dragon?" Alice wondered while looking at the monster's body lying on the street with its face up.
"That's done." Varamor confidently replied.
As the group walked back, Alice started to feel a little curious about Varamor's loyalty towards Dante.
Even though he was a warlock, she knew that Dante didn't get along with most demons. In fact, he hated their guts, so it was strange to see a demon he would trust.
Varamor explained that Dante had been the only human who challenged him in his domain and won. As such, he declared he would serve Dante until his last breath.
The Dragon King confessed that he believed Dante would eventually become the ruler of hell, so following him seemed to be the best option. Although he was slightly disappointed when the warlock declined, he still felt devotion towards the man who proved his strength against him.
"Thanks for your help…" Megan muttered under her breath with her eyes slightly open.
Varamor turned his gaze towards Megan and squinted a little, believing that the woman looked familiar.
Moreover, he felt a strange wave of satisfaction when she thanked him, and he wondered if it was the first time he had received gratitude from someone.
It took the group a little over thirty minutes to reach the checkpoint, where their allies were still keeping the NSS agents hostage after their betrayal.
Even though the group at the southern checkpoint didn't have anything to do with Ronald's betrayal, threatening them was the only way to prevent other NSS agents from going against them.
When Megan's group arrived, everyone looked shocked at their appearance, as they looked like they were all half-dead—especially Zac, whose face could barely be seen from all the blood covering it.
"Here, use this!" Lindsey said as she quickly approached Megan with a healthstone in her hand.
"No. Wait…" Megan replied in a low tone, switching her gaze to the two Death Knights passed out beside her.
"If I use the stone now, I'll fall asleep," she continued.
"So? We'll protect you!" Lindsey insisted.
"No. I can't… Not yet," Megan said, looking at Alice and asking for the conversion stone.
The brunette heard that Alice and the cyborgs tried using the gem to transfer Vesnia and Isidor's souls into an android but failed.
She was unsure what requirements were needed to make the conversion stone work, but she wanted to try to activate it before the battle was over.
'If Netherius dies for good, those guys will disappear…' Megan thought, determined to stop it from happening.
