Chapter 44: Instant Relationship

After the sex, Elaina and Marcus get dressed again but there were still sweats clinging to their skins.

Marcus’s heartbeat thumped fast as they had just done something normally a not couple would do. What’s more, he even came inside her.

He then looked at Elaina whose expression changed as if realizing what they have done.

"I can’t believe we did that," Elaina spoke, breaking the silence.

"I can’t believe it either. I don’t know what’s gotten into me but yeah, we did it."

"Are you going to take responsibility for it?" Elaina asked, still not looking at him.

Marcus realized that since he had gone all out on her, and came inside her, she might get pregnant from it. Of course, this is not something that can be brushed aside.

Marcus let out a slow breath.

He didn’t answer right away.

Instead, he stepped closer and sat beside her, close enough that their shoulders brushed.

He lifted his arm and gently wrapped it around her shoulders, pulling her slightly toward him.

Elaina tensed for a second.

Then she didn’t pull away.

Marcus looked at her.

"...Yeah," he said quietly. "I will."

Elaina finally turned her head to face him.

"Will what?"

"Take responsibility," Marcus replied. "For what happened."

He didn’t say it lightly.

There was no hesitation in his tone this time.

"I’m not the kind of man who runs away after doing something like that," he continued. "If something happens... I’ll handle it."

Elaina held his gaze.

For a moment, she didn’t speak.

"...Good," she said.

But instead of relaxing, her expression shifted into something else.

Something more serious.

Marcus noticed it.

"What?"

Elaina hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then she spoke.

"...Then marry me."

Marcus blinked.

"...What?"

Elaina looked straight at him now, her cheeks still slightly red, but her eyes steady.

"You took my first," she said. "I’m not a virgin anymore."

Marcus stared at her.

"And where I come from," she continued, "that means something. If a man takes a woman first, he marries her. That’s the custom."

"Wait, so you made love with me knowing your custom? What if this is just one time thing?" Marcus said.

The moment he said it, Elaina’s expression changed.

Her eyes didn’t leave his, but something in them shifted. The softness from earlier faded, replaced by something sharper and colder.

"I’m just saying," he continued carefully. "We didn’t exactly plan this. It just happened—"

"It didn’t just happen," Elaina cut in.

Her voice was still calm, too calm.

Marcus frowned slightly.

"Elaina—"

"You looked at me," she said, leaning a little closer. "You kissed me first. You said it was a date. You said I was beautiful."

Each word came out steady, like she was listing facts.

"And then you made love to me."

Marcus didn’t interrupt.

There was something in her tone that told him not to.

Elaina’s hand moved.

She placed it lightly over his chest again, right where his heartbeat was.

"You don’t get to call that a mistake," she said softly.

Marcus held her gaze.

"I didn’t say it was."

"Then don’t say it might be a one-time thing," she replied.

Her grip tightened just slightly.

Not enough to hurt, but enough to be felt.

"Because I won’t accept that."

Marcus exhaled slowly.

"You’re serious about this."

Elaina tilted her head just a little.

"You think I’m joking?" she asked.

There was a faint smile on her lips.

But it didn’t reach her eyes.

"I gave myself to you," she continued. "Do you really think I’d just let you walk away after that?"

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

Elaina leaned closer.

Close enough that their foreheads almost touched.

"You’re mine now," she said, almost like a whisper.

"I won’t let anyone else have you," she added.

Marcus raised an eyebrow slightly.

"That sounds a little extreme."

Elaina smiled.

This time, it was clearer.

"Does it?"

She pulled back just enough to look at him properly.

"If someone else tries to take you," she said calmly, "I’ll just make sure they can’t."

Marcus studied her face.

Trying to read it.

Half of it looked like the same Elaina he knew.

The other half, felt different.

"You’re not joking," he said.

"I’m not."

Her expression softened again.

Like nothing happened.

She leaned back slightly, her hand easing on his chest.

"But don’t worry," she added, her tone lighter now. "You won’t need to deal with that if you just stay with me."

"Well, I don’t mind that," Marcus mumbled as he scanned her again. She was above beautiful for his standards and this would be like his first girlfriend. Not to mention the fact that she is a capable clerical worker. He remembered offering her a job to his private military company he planned on starting.

Also, he liked her from the start, how soft her voice is, how delicate her features are, this is like a jackpot to him.

"Well that’s easy, I’ll marry you if that’s the case."

"Eh..." Elaina looked at him again, her cheeks flushing deeper as if she didn’t expect him to agree that easily.

Marcus didn’t look away this time.

"I’m serious," he said. "If that’s your custom, then I’ll follow it."

Elaina blinked.

"...Just like that?"

Marcus gave a small nod.

"Just like that."

For a moment, she didn’t know how to respond.

All that intensity from earlier, the certainty, and the possessiveness. It paused.

Replaced by something softer.

"You’re strange," she said quietly.

Marcus let out a small breath.

"I get that a lot."

Elaina looked at him more carefully now.

"You’re not saying this just because you feel responsible, right?"

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

He held her gaze.

"I like you," he said. "Even before all of this."

That made her pause again.

Her fingers tightened slightly against his shirt.

"Then why does it feel like there’s more?" she asked.

Marcus exhaled slowly.

"Because there is."

Elaina’s eyes narrowed just a little.

"What do you mean?"

Marcus leaned back slightly, though his arm was still around her.

"I’ll marry you," he said. "I’ll make you my partner. Not just like this—" he gestured lightly between them, "—but properly."

Elaina listened.

"But," Marcus continued, "I’m not planning to live a normal life here."

That caught her attention.

"What do you mean by that?"

Marcus looked at her.

"I’m going to build something," he said. "A company. A mercenary group. Something bigger than just taking guild quests."

Elaina’s expression shifted.

She remembered.

The conversation from earlier.

"You’re serious about that," she said.

"I am."

Marcus nodded once.

"And I want you in it."

Elaina blinked.

"In it?"

"As my partner," Marcus said. "Not just someone I marry. Someone who helps me build it."

He leaned forward slightly.

"You’re already good at managing things. Paperwork. People. Organization. I’ve seen how you work at the guild."

"I can handle the field," Marcus continued. "The operations. The fights. The strategy. But I need someone I can trust to handle everything else."

Elaina’s gaze softened just a little.

"And you think that’s me?"

Marcus didn’t hesitate.

"I know it is."

That silence came back again.

But it wasn’t heavy anymore.

It felt... different.

Elaina looked down for a moment, then back at him.

"You’re asking me to leave everything I know," she said.

"I am."

"And trust you with it."

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

Elaina studied his face, looking for hesitation or doubt. She didn’t find any, and then she spoke.

"Very well, I’ll partake in this decision of yours."

"Good, tomorrow we start!" Marcus said.
