Chapter 682: Alley

A third man shoved into the doorway, trying to climb over the one Alice had just dropped.

Alice kicked the wounded man’s shoulder and shoved him sideways.

The doorway cleared for half a second.

Karr stepped in and drove his knee into the third man’s stomach.

BAM!

The man folded.

Karr’s sword snapped up and hit his jaw with the flat.

The man fell backward into the hall.

SLASH.

He cut his neck making sure he won’t wake up.

Karr’s eyes flicked to it. "They’re coming."

Alice grabbed Silen’s collar and dragged him farther inside.

She didn’t have space to move him far. The room was small and full of junk.

The doorframe creaked.

Karr stepped back and kicked the hook line.

The line snapped loose and slid out.

Another hook came in right away.

This time it bit into the cloth pile and snagged.

Alice stomped it.

BAM!

The hook bent and slipped free.

A voice outside shouted, "Bring the net! Keep them inside!"

Alice tightened her grip on her knife.

She glanced at the window.

It was a small square opening with rusted bars.

Too narrow for Silen.

Karr’s jaw tightened. "No choice. We go out the door."

The doorframe shook again.

BAM!

A shoulder slammed into it.

The crack widened.

Karr leaned close to Alice. "When it breaks, run left. Don’t stop."

Alice nodded.

The door burst inward.

BAM!

The table slammed into the wall.

A man rushed in with a short spear.

Karr cut his spear arm.

Slash!

The spear dropped.

Alice stabbed his thigh as he staggered.

STAB!

"ARGH! My leg!"

He screamed and fell.

Two more tried to force their way in behind him.

Karr stepped into the gap and swung wide.

Slash!

Steel cleaved trough his shoulder.

The second attacker flinched back.

Alice grabbed the fallen spear and shoved it under the first man’s ribs.

STAB!

He died.

"Drag the Veyr!" someone shouted from the hall.

A net flew in.

It hit Karr’s chest and wrapped his sword arm.

Karr cursed and yanked hard.

The net tightened.

Alice rushed in and cut the net cords with two fast slashes.

Slash! Slash!

Karr tore free and kicked the net back into the hall.

BAM!

It tangled around someone’s legs.

Alice didn’t waste the opening.

She grabbed Silen under the arms and hauled him toward the doorway.

Her boots slipped on dust.

Silen’s were still out of cold.

Karr stepped into the hallway and swung, cutting at their ankles.

Slash!

A Marauder dropped with a scream.

Karr hit the next man’s wrist.

Slash!

A pipe clattered to the ground.

Alice dragged Silen out.

A bolt snapped past her head and hit the wall.

Clang!

She didn’t look back.

A flashlight beam swung toward her.

"The Fairy’s here!"

Karr slammed into the flashlight man shoulder-first.

BAM!

The light fell and rolled.

The hallway went darker.

Alice used it to move faster.

She dragged Silen past two broken doors and into the next stairwell.

Karr followed and kicked the stairwell door shut.

BAM!

The lock was broken.

It didn’t matter.

Karr jammed his sword hilt through the handle and into the frame.

Crack!

"This should be enough to block them for awhile."

Alice laid Silen on the stairs.

She slapped his cheek again.

"Wake up. Dammity you fatty! We need your teleportation"

BAM! BAM! BAM!!!!

Silen’s eyelids fluttered.

But he still didn’t wake up.

Alice cursed under her breath.

Footsteps pounded outside.

The door shook.

BAM!

The sword hilt rattled.

Karr’s breathing was rough.

He looked down the stairwell.

"Down," he said.

Alice grabbed Silen again.

This time she didn’t kick him down.

She hooked his arm over her shoulder and pulled.

Her legs shook from the weight, but she moved.

Karr stayed behind for a moment.

He grabbed a loose brick from the landing and wedged it under the door.

Then he ran down after her.

The stairwell opened into a lower floor that had half-collapsed.

A hole gaped in the wall.

Beyond it was the outside.

A narrow alley filled with rubble.

Alice’s eyes locked onto it.

"Out," she said.

Karr nodded.

He went first, checking the gap.

A hand reached in from the alley and grabbed at his throat.

Karr cut it.

Slash!

The hand snapped back with a scream.

"Another marauder here!" Karr shouted.

Alice froze.

They really completely boxed in.

Going out now will just be more dangerous.

A voice above yelled, "They’re going down! Cut the back exit!"

Alice’s mind raced. She didn’t have time to think long.

She shoved Silen against the wall and grabbed the broken table leg from the rubble.

She threw it up the stairs.

Clack.

Footsteps stumbled as someone tried to avoid it.

Karr took that half second and shoved his body through the wall gap.

He kicked the man outside in the knee.

BAM!

The man fell.

Karr grabbed his collar and yanked him into the building.

Alice stabbed him once in the side.

STAB!

Karr dragged the body into the gap and shoved it outward.

It blocked the opening.

Alice hauled Silen toward it.

A shout came from above.

"They’re at the breach!"

The stairwell thundered.

Alice pushed Silen’s head through first.

She forced the rest of him through with both hands.

Karr grabbed Silen from the other side and pulled.

Alice climbed out last.

A net flew from above and missed her by a hair.

Alice hit the alley floor and rolled.

She got up fast.

The alley had Broken walls on both sides.

It’s small, but No open space for crossbows.

Karr dragged Silen behind a collapsed slab and dropped him.

Alice leaned over Silen and checked his breathing.

"Do you know any way to wake him up?"

Karr wiped blood off his sword with his sleeve.

"Maybe try stabbing him?" he said.

Alice’s lips twitched.

She looked down the alley.

"Move," she said.

They lifted Silen together.

Alice took the front.

Karr took the back.

They started running into the alley.

Behind them, Voices followed.

"Don’t lose them!"

"They’re injured. Move!"
