Chapter 678: Old Document

Alice did not step back.

She stepped in.

Her fist slammed into the side of its neck, then again, then she drove her elbow down into the same spot.

The Mauler’s plates rattled, and its head jerked, but it did not fall.

It opened its mouth and snapped at her face.

Alice shoved her forearm into its jawline and forced it away, then jammed the shard upward under its chin, aiming for the soft flesh.

The Mauler thrashed.

Its back arms hit the ground and pushed its body sideways, trying to rip free.

STABH!!!

The shard tore the flesh, and green blood spilled.

Karr’s eyes widened. "Finish it now!"

Alice made her move.

She ripped the shard free and stabbed into it’s nostril.

She stabbed deep and twisted hard, using both hands.

"GROAR!!!"

The Mauler screamed and collapsed on one side, its leg buckling.

Before it could recover, Alice grabbed a broken stone from the ground and smashed it into its glassy eye.

BAM! BAM! BAM!!!

Alice use all her strength, and keep pounding non stop.

But the beast it not finished.

The beast jerked and flailed, claws scraping to her neck.

SLASH!

Alice backed away, breathing hard, blood running down her forearm.

The Mauler dragged itself backward toward the ruin, wounded but not dead.

Alice turned her head sharply. "Help mem finish it now."

A dying beast is dangerous, but letting it live is even worse.

It will bid it’s time while waiting to ambush them.

Keeping them awake at night.

Alice rushed in while the Rift Mauler was still dragging itself back.

The shard went into the torn flesh under its chin again, to widen the wound she already made.

The beast hissed and thrashed.

Karr stepped up from the side. He was still tired, but he forced his body to move.

He grabbed a thick stone and slammed it into the Mauler’s ribs, right where the plates were cracked.

BAM!

The Mauler’s front arm flailed.

Silen he picked up a rock and threw it into the Mauler’s face to keep its head turned.

Alice used that second.

She jammed the shard into the soft gap again and ripped sideways. Green blood spilled out in a thick stream. The Mauler’s body jerked, then sagged.

It tried to crawl one more step.

Karr raised his stone and brought it down on the Mauler’s skull.

BAM!

The head split.

Alice stood over it for a second, chest rising fast, then she stepped back and wiped her bloody hand on her sleeve.

Silen suggested. "We should cut it apart."

Alice looked at him. "Why."

"Despite it’s looks, it’s meat is quite nutritious," Silen said. "And the blood will make other beast stay away.."

Karr frowned. "What you mean? Blood should bring beast here. It mean there’s prey.."

"That’s true for most," Silen said. "But Rift Mauler is different. Its blood smell pushes other creatures away."

Alice watched the dead Mauler’s green blood soak into the dirt.

The odor was sharp, like bitter metal.

"You’re sure?" she asked.

Silen nodded. "If we smear some on the entrance and on the ground near the shelter, most things won’t come close. They smell it and leave."

Alice did not like the idea of using blood like that, but they needed food and cover.

"Let’s do it," she said. "Fast."

Karr crouched and started working, using the shard to slicet.

He avoided the thick glands near the throat and belly, cutting around them like he knew exactly what to touch and what not to.

Alice watched him for a moment. "You know a lot."

Karr didn’t look up. " We Khaldrin learn fast.

No matter what beast, there’re pattern on their internal organ.

For example we should always avoid eating intestine before processing it first."

Silen let out a weak laugh. "As expected from the hunter."

Karr kept cutting. "It’s just how we live. Everyone on my race could do this." 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Silen asked. "Why weren’t you with your people? Khaldrin usually move in groups."

As their stamina is limited, khaldrin has evolved to always move in group.

"Maybe he got separated," Alice said, because it was what happened to her.

Karr cut deeper, then pulled a strip of meat free and set it on a flat rock. Green blood dripped from his hands.

He hesitated, then sighed

"It’s because of my stature," he said. "I’m smaller than the others. They look down on me."

He swallowed and wiped his mouth. "When we’re surrounded by the old prisoner, they push me out as bait."

Karr is not stupid, he doesn’t want to do it.

But it’s not like he had any choice.

As they left him alone, he naturally become the bait.

Alice listened without reacting.

Silen’s spoke. "At least if you got captured they will recruit or kill you. My fate instead."

Silen’s mouth tightened. "Every species have their own function. As you’re the only one that can teleport here you surely treated as precious object."

Alice crouched and picked up a clump of dirt. She pressed it near the Mauler’s blood, then sniffed the air.

"I will smear it around the entrance. Hope it worked."

Karr nodded and dragged his bloody hand along the ground in a wide line. He wiped more blood onto a broken vine hanging over the doorwa.

Silen didn’t complain.

He know it’s normal for them to doubt his information.

He picked up the meat, then shoved it into a cloth wrap.

Alice looked at the ruin again.

The entrance was narrow, and inside was dark.

"Let’s go in," she said. "Hope we could find some light source inside."

They moved toward the shelter.

Alice stepped through the entrance first, shard in hand.

The place look very old and familiar.

Alice feel the furniture and layout is like those on planet Ainode.

’Does human lived here before?’ she wonder.

But she didn’t find it weird as this planet is in human territory.

She picked up one of the paper, on the dusty desk.

[YEAR 2,842. MARS. Humanity Lost.]
