Chapter 676: Blink

Alice shifted her stance.

When he reached her, she caught his forearm with both hands, pulled down, and twisted her hips.

The beastkin lost balance.

His own weight carried him forward, and Alice drove him face-first into the ground.

BAM!!!

The horned skull hit stone with a dull crack.

A second beastkin tried to grab her from behind.

Alice ducked, slipped under the arm, and slammed her shoulder into his ribs.

BAM! BAM!

As he bent, she drove a punch into his liver, then hooked his ankle and swept him onto his back.

The Khaldrin exhaled hard, then stabbed downward into a man’s foot to stop him from chasing.

"ARGH!"

The man screamed and fell.

But the Khaldrin’s hand shook when he pulled the shard free.

His stamina was running out.

Alice’s eyes flicked over the crowd, searching for an opening.

They cannot keep staying like this.

That was when she saw the Veyr.

He was ten meters away, surrounded by humans.

Four men pressed him from different sides, keeping him boxed in.

Every time he tried to move, someone slammed into him.

His glowing lines pulsed faintly.

He lifted a hand, like he was trying to shape space.

BAM!!!

A fist smashed into his jaw, snapping his head sideways. The glow stuttered and died.

"Still waving your hand?" one man laughed. "Do it again."

He tried again.

A boot kicked his knee. He nearly fell.

"Be careful! He’s our golden ticket!"

Hearing their talks, Alice quickly understood.

They were afraid he could escape, so they want to make him tired, or even better knock him out.

She grabbed the Khaldrin’s sleeve and pulled him close.

"That one," she said, nodding toward the Veyr. "He’s our ticket out."

The Khaldrin followed her gaze. His pale eyes narrowed.

He hesitated for half a breath, then gave a nod.

"Let’s go."

They pushed forward.

An beastkin stepped into their path, swinging a pipe at Alice’s head.

BANG!

Alice raised her forearm to block. Pain shot up her arm, but she did not stop.

She stepped in, slammed her forehead into the man’s nose, then drove a punch into his mouth.

BAM!!!

Teeth flying in the air, the man fell backward, blood spraying into dust.

Two more tried to close the gap.

The Khaldrin darted forward and cut the first across the wrist.

The pipe dropped.

CLANG!

He spin and stabbed the second’s thigh, then shoved him into the crowd.

His breathing was rough now.

Alice kept close to him, to make sure he would survived.

It’s not that she care, but he has proved to be quite an asset.

Swoosh!

A man lunged for the Khaldrin’s back.

Alice hooked his arm, twisted, and snapped him down into the ground.

When another tried to grab her hair, she caught his fingers, bent them back until he screamed, and kicked him away.

They finally reached the Veyr.

The Veyr was on one knee, arms up, face smeared with dust and blood.

A scarred man grabbed his shoulder and hauled him up.

"Don’t let him move!" someone shouted.

Alice dashed forward.

BAM!!!

She punched the man’s throat.

The man’s gagged, grip loosening. Alice grabbed his head and slammed it into the nearest man.

The Khaldrin followed, stabbing in quick succession.

He did not go for kills. He went for tendons, hands, and ankles.

They fell down, blocking the path to the Veryr.

For a moment, the Veyr had air.

Alice grabbed him by the arm and yanked him behind her.

"Can you teleport?" she asked.

The Veyr coughed, eyes sharp even through pain.

"Yes," he said. "But I need time."

Another groupd surged toward them.

They spread out and tried to surround them.

Alice stepped forward to keep them focused on her.

"We’ll buy time."

The Veyr’s jaw tightened.

"Stay at least five meters from me," he said.

Alice glanced at the Khaldrin. "Five meters."

The Khaldrin stumbled back, dragging his breath with him. He planted his feet and raised the shard again, using his body to block one side.

Alice ran forward to widen the gap.

A man rushed her with a rock tied to cloth, swinging it like a flail.

Alice ducked under the arc, rushed into his space, and drove a punch into his sternum.

When he wheezed and folded, she grabbed his shoulder and hurled him sideways into another attacker.

A horned beastkin tried to spear her with his horns.

Alice sidestepped and slammed her palm into the side of his neck, then hit the same spot again with her knuckles. His legs went soft.

She shoved him down and stomped his hand when he tried to grab her ankle.

Behind her, the Khaldrin was losing ground.

His shard still flashed, but slower now. His chest heaved. Sweat cut lines through the dust on his silver skin.

Two men rushed him at once.

He cut one, but the second slammed into him shoulder-first, driving him backward.

Alice pivoted and sprinted back, closing the distance in three steps.

BAM!

She punched the attacker’s ear, then drove her knee into his ribs.

The man choked and fell away.

The Khaldrin sucked in air like he was drowning.

"Move," Alice told him. "Back."

He stumbled back again, forcing space between them and the Veyr.

The Veyr stood with both hands raised, fingers spread.

His glowing lines brightened, then flickered. His face tightened like he was forcing something through a wall.

A man noticed him and charged straight at him.

Alice threw herself in the way.

She caught the man’s wrist, twisted, and slammed him down.

BAM!!!

Before he could roll, she drove her fist into his temple.

He went limp.

More were coming.

Alice kept her feet moving. She didn’t let them reach the Veyr.

Every step she took was to drag the fight away from that five-meter circle.

SWOSH!!!

The dust swirled in a spiral. The ground under Alice’s boots vibrated.

The Veyr’s eyes widened.

"Now," he rasped.

A ripple spread outward like a wave through glass.

Alice felt her stomach drop.

The world snapped.
