Medical and Martial God-Chapter 110: Turning the Hula Hoop
The house Zuo You gave Ye Xiu and Murong was fully decorated, so they could move in right after adding their own furniture and appliances. Furthermore, the furniture and appliances Zuo You and Zuo Song’er bought for Murong’s home were all top-of-the-line.
Upon entering, one was met with a sense of richness and grandeur, though of course, it couldn’t compare to Ye Xiu’s family.
"You two watch TV for a while, I’ll cook," Murong said.
"Sister Murong, let me help you."
Zuo Song’er’s face beamed with excitement. Due to her congenital heart condition and her status as the young mistress of the Zuo Family, she had always been waited on hand and foot and had never once set foot in a kitchen.
"Sure!" Murong happily agreed.
"Big Brother, you join us too. Sister Murong and I can wash and prep the vegetables, and you can be in charge of cooking, okay?" Zuo Song’er asked, hugging Ye Xiu’s arm.
"Teacher Ye is the Xuanse Medicine King and is incredibly wealthy. He wouldn’t do rough work like cooking," Murong remarked. This wasn’t a jab at Ye Xiu; in her view, the wealthy were always waited on hand and foot.
However, Zuo Song’er was not pleased to hear this. "Sister Murong, Big Brother is capable of anything."
"Whether he is or not, you should ask him yourself. If he can cook, I’ll hula hoop right here on the spot," Murong said, absolutely certain she would win this bet.
Ye Xiu’s eyes lit up.
"Big Brother, you really can’t cook?" Zuo Song’er asked.
"I can," Ye Xiu replied. "To see Murong hula hoop, I’ll show off my skills for lunch today."
"Don’t try to be a hero. The ingredients are quite expensive, so don’t waste them," Murong said doubtfully.
"If the food I make isn’t delicious, I’ll be the one hula hooping right here," Ye Xiu declared.
Murong’s eyes sparkled. She instantly pictured Ye Xiu hula hooping, and her cheeks flushed red.
"Well then, a promise is a promise," she said.
"I always keep my word," Ye Xiu replied.
"I’ll be the witness!" Zuo Song’er said excitedly, raising her hand.
"Alright, Song’er, let’s go watch TV."
Murong stuffed the bag of ingredients into Ye Xiu’s hands and pulled Zuo Song’er to the living room to watch TV, thinking to herself, I’m going to win for sure.
Seeing Ye Xiu head to the kitchen, Zuo Song’er whispered to Murong, "Sister Murong, if Big Brother’s cooking is awful, we have to pretend it’s delicious. Otherwise, he’ll lose face."
"But then we won’t get to see him hula hoop," Murong replied. "Don’t you want to see him hula hoop?"
Zuo Song’er blushed, looked down, and shyly murmured, "I do!"
"Then we’ll just tell the truth. Being a bad cook isn’t anything to be ashamed of," Murong said.
After a moment of thought, Zuo Song’er mischievously suggested, "Even if Big Brother’s cooking is delicious, we should still say it’s terrible."
"Agreed!" Murong nodded.
The two girls exchanged a sly glance and snickered.
Meanwhile, Ye Xiu was already bustling about in the kitchen. After washing the vegetables, he began to chop them. If Murong and Zuo Song’er had been there, they would have seen that his chopping speed was simply invincible. Even a Great Grandmaster wouldn’t have been able to follow the trajectory of his knife; he was just too fast.
In less than an hour, the meal was ready.
"You... you made all of this?"
Staring at the feast on the dining table—sweet and sour ribs, stir-fried pork with hot peppers, cumin lamb, steamed hairy crabs, stir-fried shredded potatoes with vinegar, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, and preserved egg and lean meat congee—Murong and Zuo Song’er were dumbfounded. The dishes looked, smelled, and undoubtedly tasted amazing.
"How could you possibly make so many dishes in less than an hour?" Murong questioned. If she hadn’t been sitting in the living room the whole time, she would have suspected Ye Xiu had secretly ordered takeout.
"Two gas stoves, a pressure cooker, a rice cooker, and an induction cooktop, all used at the same time. Making this many dishes in under an hour is easy," Ye Xiu said with a smile.
Murong and Zuo Song’er looked at each other. Their silent exchange was clear: Even if it’s delicious, we have to say it’s bad.
"The presentation is decent, but who knows how it tastes," Murong said, handing Zuo Song’er a pair of chopsticks. "Song’er, you try it."
"Okay!"
As Zuo Song’er picked up a piece of sweet and sour rib, she reminded herself, Even if it’s amazing, I have to act like I just ate something disgusting.
However...
"Wow, this is so delicious!" Zuo Song’er exclaimed, her face a picture of bliss.
Murong stared in disbelief. Hey, weren’t we on the same team? How could you betray our pact just like that?
She picked up a piece of sweet and sour rib and put it in her mouth. Her eyes widened.
It’s unbelievably good!
"You’re the esteemed Xuanse Medicine King, so why on earth did you learn to cook?" Murong asked, frustrated that such a talent was wasted on someone who should be above it.
"Yeah, Big Brother, why is your food so tasty?" Zuo Song’er asked.
Ye Xiu sat down and began serving them congee. "I was expelled from the Ye Family when I was three," he explained, "and lived with my mother and maternal grandparents. At sixteen, I was framed and hunted, forcing me to flee the country for ten years. My cooking skills were forged from sheer necessity."
The smiles vanished from Murong’s and Zuo Song’er’s faces. Only then did they remember that Ye Xiu hadn’t always been a master of medical skills and wasn’t born into wealth. The hardships he had endured were beyond their imagination.
"Those who endure the greatest hardships stand above all others. I believe Teacher Ye’s life will be a straight and glorious road from now on," Murong said comfortingly.
Zuo Song’er also wanted to comfort him but couldn’t find the words. She finally said, "I’m going to eat every last bite of the food you made, Big Brother!"
"Before we eat, shouldn’t we enjoy the sight of Murong hula hooping?" Ye Xiu asked cheerfully.
Murong’s pretty face darkened instantly. The conversation was so serious a moment ago! How did he turn it into a joke so quickly?
"Yes, yes!" Zuo Song’er chimed in teasingly.
"Ahem... well, a bet’s a bet..." Murong mumbled, her face twisting into a pained expression.
Watching her, Ye Xiu was inwardly delighted and was just about to press the issue when his phone rang.
It was the Ghost Doctor. "Master, someone at a hotpot restaurant threw a boiling hotpot in a little girl’s face. She’s been sent to Shenghe Hospital. The burns are too severe; I can’t handle it."
"Who did it?" Ye Xiu asked.
"The two of them already ran off," the Ghost Doctor said. "I’ve sent someone to get the restaurant’s surveillance footage. You’d better come quickly, Master. The little girl’s injuries are extremely serious."
"Alright, I’m on my way."
Ye Xiu hung up and said to Murong and Zuo Song’er, "You two go ahead and eat. I have to go."
Without waiting for a reply, he hurried away.
