Mecha Devourer System-Chapter 200: Cold Infiltration (III)
Once he finished impersonating the military officer, Everlearn did not continue through the guards' quarters.
After all, he was only impersonating.
Who knew if the one he had impersonated was right at the front gate? It would be over the moment he ran into him.
For that same reason, he decided to leave the way he had entered, through the window, shutting it closed, though it remained slightly ajar due to the severed handles.
Still, it was good enough.
Now donning the uniform, he calmly walked out, choosing the left corner Sora had reported to contain only two people.
The guards heard the clear sound of his footsteps and turned to face him.
They paused quietly for a moment before respect flickered in their eyes.
"Head Guard Yourza!"
Both exclaimed, standing upright.
Everlearn nodded as he walked forward. "I've sent the other two on a minor errand. Don't worry about them," he said, continuing forward before suddenly pausing and turning to look at both guards, who instantly snapped upright once more.
"You." He pointed.
The guard immediately straightened.
"Give me the cap."
The man obeyed almost instantly, passing the cap to him. Everlearn put on the face cap.
"Keep alert."
"Yes, sir!"
They both roared back, watching their superior's back completely fade into the distance before exhaling in relief.
Then one of them spoke.
"That's unexpected. I thought Head Guard Yourza was at the training spot. I could swear I saw him leave just two hours ago."
One of them muttered, but the other shrugged it off.
"He might've decided to take an early break. And seeing how tightly dressed he was, he probably had a meeting with the Base Bosses."
"Whatever it is… It's none of our business."
The other said, and the first nodded as they both continued their quiet chatter.
Just like that, Everlearn was able to move through the guards' quarters.
He came across dozens of guards during his walk, and each of them stood upright as he passed by quietly.
'Seems like I hit gold.'
Everlearn mused as he continued along his path, making sure not to walk amongst large crowds of guards.
He moved along the building's shadows, keeping himself hidden, and even if anyone noticed his sudden footsteps, they took only a single look at his face before stepping aside to let him pass.
The walk to the main base was a lengthy one, and after he was about twenty kilometers away, he began noticing a change in the guards.
The guards stationed in the quarters were all Grade W Corers.
But around the main base, he could already sense about eleven Grade W Corers and roughly three Grade V Corers lingering around.
That confirmed he was getting closer to the base, but it also meant trouble.
As he continued walking, most of the other guards were no longer standing upright.
Instead, they surveyed him with hard looks, though none stopped him from passing.
It was immediately clear that these guards were of a similar hierarchy to the Head Guard he was impersonating, or perhaps even higher.
When he was about ten meters from the entrance, his steps were halted by two V-Guards holding ultra-advanced mech pistols in their hands.
"State your mission."
The thick voice boomed out, and Everlearn unconsciously stood straighter.
"Head Guard Yourza, under orders to immediately deliver a personal message to Staff Gione Lowell!"
"Who gave you the order?"
The second guard asked, the words ringing sharply in Everlearn's ears.
"Say, Sir Torant!"
"Sir Torant, sir."
He replied, his expression unchanging.
The name sent both guards furrowing their brows as they tried to recall its familiarity, but it did not come to them.
Still,
"Guards aren't allowed inside the base. Not even Head Guards."
One of them said.
"I know that, sirs. But I'm afraid I've been employed by a power I cannot disobey. Be reassured, it's a simple message that will be relayed in only a few minutes."
He spoke calmly, standing upright and staring straight ahead at the ceiling.
At that moment, one of the guards hummed deeply before stepping aside.
"I'll allow it this once. Next time, make it known to the Head Staff that guards have no authority to enter the main base."
Everlearn continued forward to the front gate, heads bowed slightly before disappearing inside.
The two guards naturally returned to their posts, blocking the gate once more.
______
"Sir Torant?"
Everlearn murmured under his breath as the words echoed in his mind.
'Yes. Sir is the third-level hierarchy title for staff workers in the TCF Base. That's why putting it by the side of a random name could work just fine.'
Sara answered.
"Now that you're inside the base, head toward the elevator," she ordered, and he moved immediately.
The area was filled with a large number of staff members, each busy with projection monitors and keyboards.
There were also guards armed to the teeth stationed at specific corners, overlooking the area.
Absolute silence reigned, with even a faint pressure lingering in the air.
Everlearn received a few looks due to his uniform being slightly different, but he wasn't stopped, likely because the guards at the gate had already allowed him in.
Because of that, he was able to enter the elevator, clicking the level marked 3BC as instructed by Sara, and he was quietly whisked upward.
When the elevator opened again, he found himself in another hall, but this time, he was surprised.
It wasn't a hall filled with people, but only a single person seated at a large, solitary desk, wearing spectacles as her slender hands typed away at the keyboard.
She paused as the elevator doors opened, lifting her head.
A look of confusion flickered in her eyes, before rapidly turning to caution.
"You're not supposed to be here."
