Chapter 35: Home bitter home 1

There it was again, the hot and cold breathing fanning her face.

Sage opened her eyes to see a black fur Snowflake. She almost screamed but controlled herself and sat down, staring intently at the nine-tailed fox.

She wasn’t sure when she went unconscious, but she knew the dragon’s back wasn’t comfortable, even with the large coat she was wearing.

It was nearly evening, and she could see her kingdom ahead of her, small but promising. Sage became concerned about Cyrus as the temperature dropped. Is it possible that the cold was caused by his emotions?

As they approached the kingdom, the dragon roared, as if to alert everyone in Credia that she had arrived, and everyone came out of their homes, while those on the street paused to gaze at the sky.

They were surprised to see a dragon flying above them without attacking.

When she saw the castle, she got a big smile on her face. Her kingdom was safe, and she was overjoyed. Her tense heart relaxed, and she felt a heavy weight lift from her shoulders.

The ice dragon had been playing with her!

Sage jumped off the dragon and ran up the stairs to the castle’s large doors, where two guards stood guard on either side.

"I.."

The door abruptly opened, revealing the king. Julius appeared as if he had seen a ghost. Behind him was Lia’s husband Dexter, who appeared irritated to see her.

He was a hefty man with brown hair and a hideous mouthstache that gave him the appearance of a cave barbarian.

Sage was disgusted by his mere presence. She despised him, and he despised her.

"What is he doing here?" Sage asked, not caring to hide her disgust for him.

"I am supposed to ask you that, dear Sage." His deep raspy voice was filled with anger.

Sage rolled her eyes at him, earning an offended gasp from him.

"Father," she called, her gaze shifting to her father, who remained stunned.

"S..sage." He trembled and drew her into a tight hug.

Sage’s eyes widened and welled up with tears. She was about to return the hug when,

"Ouch!" Julius shouted in pain and released Sage.

Sage’s eyes widened as she saw her father’s palm bitten, his skin almost ripped off, and the blood pouring from the wound.

"Ah!" Julius screamed in agony, clutching his wrist.

"Father!" Sage exclaimed, stunned, and frowned deeply at the nine-tailed fox in her arms.

In his dark state, he appeared extremely devious, and there was no sign of blood on him. Sage was on the verge of flinging him away, but she inhaled to keep herself from doing so.

"Breathe, Julius, breathe." Dexter chanted to Julius, who was on the verge of crying.

Sage was at a loss for words. She felt guilty but didn’t know how to blame the nine-tailed fox.

"I am truly sorry, Father!" She expressed regret.

Dexter gave her a stern look before dragging Julius back into the castle, and Sage followed.

Two maids appeared, stunned to see Sage.

"Take him, and treat his wound." Dexter informed them, and Julius was taken away.

Sage couldn’t say anything. Dexter has had power in the castle since when? 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

Dexter was just a man to her, power hungry, and rarely came to the castle. What was he up to, and when did he arrive at the castle?

He gave her a friendly smile.

An ugly smile that provoked her.

"Welcome back, Sage, you look like a corpse and you’ve lost weight, but you’re still as beautiful as ever." Dexter said casually to her, his brown eyes lingering with suspicion and curiosity.

"Thank you, Dexter, but I don’t need you to point those out." She walked his name with rage, and he frowned deeply, wanting to pull her, but he stood back when his gaze met the nine tailed fox’s big fierce silver eyes.

"The rumours are true, Guardian Beast." He gave a sly smile.

"What?" Sage inquired, frowning.

Dexter returned her stare with a scowl of disbelief.

"What exactly are you doing here? Isn’t it true that you’re supposed to be dead?" He asked, disgustedly staring at her.

"Dead? Me? Aren’t you supposed to ask whether the ice dragon has died?" Sage, perplexed, inquired.

Dexter burst out laughing. Laughter that was mocking.

Sage looked at him, perplexed.

What the hell was going on? Why did she feel strange in her own home?

Dexter came to a halt, dashed towards her, and grabbed her jaw.

"Returning here was a huge mistake, missy!" He snarled at her.

Sage’s eyes glowed brightly.

"Get your filthy hands off me!" She yelled at him.

Snowflake jumped off her arms as if being told and Sage punched Dexter right in his cheek bones.

Hearing a crack, she smiled, and his scream was like bad music to her ears.

He let go of her jaw and staggered backwards, screaming in pain. "Guards! Bring her down to the dungeon!"

Sage’s eyes widened in surprise.

"What?" She asked, stunned, as Dexter struggled to control his breathing due to the pain from his broken cheek bone.

Guards entered through the doors behind her, intending to take her as a prisoner.

"He’s commanding everyone?" Sage was taken aback. When did Dexter get this kind of power?

Without further ado, she exclaimed, carried the nine-tailed fox, and fled into the castle, but guards appeared around every corner.

"What?! Please don’t get any closer! I am your princess!" She yelled, moving backwards, but they were getting closer, some pointing spears at her.

Her mind was in such disarray that she hoped what was happening was a nightmare.

Why were they against her? What exactly was going on? She had come to see if her people were safe from Esteban or to possibly save them from him, but now she was surrounded by guards and about to be taken to the dungeon.

"Father!" Sage called helplessly, not wanting to fight her own people for whom she had been fighting for.

Dexter approached her, still rubbing his cheek. The pain in his eyes was visible, but he was able to mask it.

"Dear Sage, you must have many questions, but they will be answered soon, so do not fight back."

Sage’s eyes twitched in rage, but she soon became dizzy.

"Arrgh!" She screamed and lowered her head in frustration.

She was too weak to fight in the first place.

"You’re a good girl." Dexter laughed as Sage willingly allowed the guards to escort him to the dungeon.

"Foolish mage, you are just a pawn, nothing else," he said, his smile gone from his face as he stared at the direction she had gone.
