Magic Space: Struggling to Survive in the Apocalypse-Chapter 115: Ronan Kendrick’s Good Days
Wendy looked at Ronan Kendrick curiously but didn’t greet him. Roy Henderson and Owen Chapman glanced at each other, then called out, "Mr. Kendrick."
"Why did you make so much food? It’s such a waste."
"What do you mean, a waste? Everyone just has to eat a little more. Alright, I’ll just cook some greens and then we can eat."
Evelyn Ford made six dishes in total: braised ribs with green beans, scallion-fried lamb, big plate chicken, braised fish, red-braised pork, and greens with tofu.
Everyone was a little reserved. Evelyn Ford gave Ronan Kendrick a look, and he immediately picked up his chopsticks and took a bite. Only then did the others pick up their bowls.
"Miss Ford, this is so delicious."
Evelyn Ford ruffled Wendy’s hair. "Then you should eat a lot more, okay?"
Wendy nodded and whispered, "He’s handsome."
Evelyn Ford glanced at Ronan Kendrick. He was busy stuffing his face with meat, completely engrossed.
"Wendy is pretty too."
"Ford, is your work going smoothly?"
"It is. I even ran into one of my father’s former apprentices at the Medical Department."
Officer Graham let out a sigh of relief. "That’s good. It’s better to have an acquaintance there. By the way, Quincy probably told you, but several girls have died at the base recently. Don’t go out alone at night. After the apocalypse, a lot of people’s mentalities have become warped. There are a lot of extremists."
"I understand."
’There are still three people lying downstairs,’ Evelyn Ford thought, glancing at the most dangerous person in the room.
After Officer Graham and the others left, the sky darkened. Evelyn Ford and Ronan Kendrick went downstairs and took a small path around to the back. Ronan Kendrick scanned the area and saw no one else. Evelyn stepped forward to check the three people for breath. As expected, they were all dead, their bodies frozen stiff.
She stored them in her space, and the two of them quickly left under the cover of darkness.
With these three men disappearing without a trace, that Miss Holloway would definitely send more people. Evelyn Ford wished she could drag the woman from her space and slap her for causing so much trouble over nothing.
Ronan Kendrick, however, remained as calm as ever. He didn’t distinguish between right and wrong; he killed purely based on his mood.
The two of them were tied together now. If he stirred up trouble, Evelyn Ford wouldn’t be able to escape the consequences either.
As for the three men, Evelyn Ford would find a place to dump their bodies later. With them having vanished into thin air, Miss Holloway would need evidence if she wanted to cause trouble.
Work at the Medical Department was still hectic, but Evelyn Ford’s points were also accumulating quickly. The week flew by, and Evelyn had a day off. She decided to take Ronan Kendrick shopping and spend all the points they had saved up over the week.
The two arrived at the villa marketplace, each grabbing a shopping cart. Evelyn Ford took a look at the prices and saw they were anything but cheap.
Tomatoes were six points each, and eggs were four points each. A small bok choy or green vegetable was ten points a head, while a large green vegetable or napa cabbage was thirty points a head.
Evelyn Ford calculated their points. After six days of work, she had 470 points, and Ronan Kendrick had 2250.
"You go get the meat weighed," Evelyn Ford told Ronan Kendrick while she went to weigh the vegetables. They split up and used their points to fill two entire shopping carts. The people around them stared, their eyes filled with shock and envy.
She had plenty of flour and rice in her space. Besides, the market only sold old rice and coarse bran, some of which was even moldy.
Evelyn Ford inspected the vegetables. They looked decent enough. Judging by the roots, they were all hydroponic. It didn’t matter if they tasted good, as long as they were edible.
The two returned fully loaded, turning heads all along the way. Fortunately, the weather was cold and everyone was bundled up tightly, so no one could see their faces.
Back on the sixth floor, Serena Lynch and Chase Underwood happened to be coming out of their apartment. It looked like they were also heading out to buy things. When they saw Evelyn Ford and Ronan Kendrick returning with several bags, Serena’s eyes went wide. Even the taciturn Chase Underwood couldn’t help but stare.
"Evelyn, quite the haul you’ve got there!"
Evelyn Ford just smiled and said nothing.
"It must be nice to be so capable. Evelyn, are they still hiring nurses where you work? I can learn."
"They probably are, but I’m not sure about the details. You could go ask the administrators at the Medical Department."
Serena Lynch was clearly tempted. "Okay, I’ll go ask tomorrow."
"Um, I’d like to ask... are you in the Hunting Squad?" Chase Underwood took a few steps forward and asked Ronan Kendrick in a low voice.
Ronan Kendrick’s expression was cold and aloof, showing no intention of acknowledging him. Chase Underwood looked a bit awkward. Evelyn Ford cleared her throat, and Ronan glanced down at her.
"Yes," he answered, albeit reluctantly.
"I want to work for the Hunting Squad. Can I join your team, Mr. Kendrick?"
’Wow, he’s already calling him ’Mr. Kendrick’,’ Evelyn thought. ’If I remember correctly, Serena Lynch is twenty-three, and Chase Underwood looks to be at least twenty-five or twenty-six.’
"Suit yourself."
Chase Underwood thought Ronan Kendrick had agreed and was thrilled. "Mr. Kendrick, which squad are you in? I’ll apply for a job transfer tomorrow."
"Squad 17."
Ronan Kendrick was getting impatient, repeatedly signaling to Evelyn Ford with his eyes that he wanted to go home.
Evelyn Ford took out her keys and opened the door. Serena Lynch took the hint and pulled Chase Underwood away.
"Are you going to team up with Chase Underwood? He looks pretty frail."
Ronan Kendrick let out a haughty snort. "I don’t want him."
"Then why did you tell him your squad number?"
"Didn’t you clear your throat for me to tell him?"
Evelyn Ford slapped her forehead in exasperation. "What a beautiful misunderstanding."
Evelyn Ford stored all the things she had traded her points for that day in her space and, completely satisfied, started cooking.
"KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK..." Just then, a sudden knock came from the door. Evelyn Ford had Ronan Kendrick put on his colored contacts before she opened it.
Seeing three men standing outside, Evelyn Ford’s mind instantly flashed to the two bodyguards Ronan Kendrick had thrown off the building.
"And you are?"
"You’re Evelyn Ford?"
Evelyn Ford nodded. "I am."
"Lilith Owens from the Fishing Squad told our Miss that you have a small squirrel and a colorful bird. Our Miss is generous and is willing to trade you one thousand points for them. Bring them out."
"Sorry, you’re too late."
The man paused, looking at Evelyn Ford in confusion. "What do you mean?"
"The night we first arrived at the base, they died because they couldn’t acclimate to the new environment."
The man didn’t believe her and moved to enter the apartment to search it. Evelyn Ford had no choice but to step aside. After searching the place and finding no squirrel or bird, the man finally stepped back outside.
"A few days ago, Lilith Owens came here with two men. I checked the surveillance footage. They entered the elevator, but then they disappeared. Can you explain that?"
Evelyn Ford feigned shock. "Did something like that happen? We never saw them."
The man glanced at Evelyn Ford, then his gaze fell on Ronan Kendrick. When he saw Ronan’s face, his eyes narrowed inscrutably.
"What’s his name?"
"This is my boyfriend, Ronan Kendrick."
Evelyn Ford pulled Ronan Kendrick’s hand into hers. The man looked at the two of them, then took out a camera and snapped a picture of Ronan.
"What are you doing?" Evelyn Ford’s expression soured.
"Ronan Kendrick, is it? Your fun is about to begin."
