Chapter 296: The New Baby

"Princess?" called Tania who felt confused seeing Arielle’s got up from her seat.

"Hey!" Arielle called loudly enough to the guard who was holding the child.

The guard raised his head towards the second floor. The man just blinked his eyes in confusion as the princess stretched out her hand, and then walked back into her room.

Not long after, Arielle appeared while running through the pile of snow. Tania, who saw Arielle not wearing a coat under the freezing temperature, chased Arielle while reminding the girl to put her coat on before going outside.

"G-good afternoon, Your Highness... Is there anything I can help you with?" said the guard nervously.

The baby in his arms cried louder.

"What is it? Why is this child crying?" asked Arielle who was worried to see that the little child did not stop crying.

The baby looked like she was only a few months old. Her hands were clenched into fists and her face was red from crying. The baby could only whimper. There was not a single word that Arielle could utter, and the guard understood the princess’ concern

"I don’t know, Your Highness. As I patrolled the higher-ups’ carriages, I heard the cry of a baby. When I checked, I found her crying in one of the parked carriages of a Duke. Lord Kael asked me to take her to Blackthorn Palace to find his parents."

"Alone? Under this cold air?" asked Arielle, so surprised.

"That’s right, Your Highness."

Tania managed to catch up with Arielle and put the coat on the girl’s shoulder. After thanking Tania, Arielle grabbed her coat and wrapped the little girl with it. She could see how troubled the guard was as he carried the crying child.

"May I?" offered Arielle who was worried that the man would drop the baby accidentally. Tania also could guess that the guard had no experience in taking care of a small child.

"N-no need, Your Highness. I can do it. Lord Kael has assigned me to find the whereabouts of this child’s parents."

"You look uncomfortable. I’m just worried about the child. If I take her, I can ask William for help in finding the whereabouts of her parents, or the culprit who abandoned this child."

The guard looked doubtful, but his hands were starting to go numb from carrying the child all this time. Even his every attempt to calm the child seemed futile.

"Give the baby to Princess Arielle," said Tania defending Arielle.

After carrying the baby in her arms. Arielle ordered the guard to summon William to her room. In this way, she could warm the baby without having to go around the palace looking for the child’s parents.

"Very well, Your Majesty. I’ll do it right away."

"Oh, and Lucas too!" ask Arielle.

Lucas might be able to help find a warmer blanket for the baby later. Tania urged Arielle, who was carrying the baby, to go into her room because the wind was blowing very cold and Arielle didn’t wear her coat.

The first thing Arielle did was take the baby to the room to warm the child. Tania was always beside Arielle to help her. The old woman did have more experience in taking care of a baby because she had been taking care of Arielle since she was a baby too.

Arielle saw the baby on the bed who kept crying. The girl took the initiative to carry her again. Tania tried to calm Arielle not to panic. When Tania sang a lullaby, the baby’s whimper slowly began to subside.

"Looks like she’s hungry, Tania," said Arielle, seeing the child sucking her index finger. Arielle didn’t have the heart to pull her index finger from the child’s mouth because the baby would whine again.

Tania checked the baby’s condition and told Arielle to hold on for a while. She will go to the kitchen to make food for the baby. While waiting for Tania, Arielle sat on a nearby couch while holding a baby who was getting sleepy.

The bodyguard who found the baby called William and Lucas at the same time. The two of them ran hurriedly towards the princess’s room. Not only the two of them, but Sasha also joined in to see the baby.

"Your Highness! I heard there were reports of an unidentified baby being found!" cried William frantically.

"Shhh!!" Arielle rebuked the man for shouting loudly. Luckily, the baby in her arms didn’t wake up.

William, Lucas, and Sasha covered their mouths at the same time.

William crouched in front of Arielle while looking at the baby. It was a girl with very thin red hair. Tania had estimated the age of the child was around six or seven months old because only a few of her lower teeth were visible, and she was able to support her neck on her own.

"What name do we give her?" asked Sasha who was amazed to see the baby.

"Sasha, this baby will be returned to her parents," Arielle replied softly.

Sasha just realized that he was not in the orphanage right now. In the past, whenever they met an abandoned baby, that question was always the first question they asked because every baby placed at the door was definitely unwanted, and no one would possibly look for them.

Therefore, seeing a new baby made Sasha subconsciously assume that the baby would become his new family. Arielle turned to William and Lucas.

"William, please go through all the guest lists and then ask everyone in the palace one by one, especially those who have come for an agenda to meet the king. Ask them if they are looking for a red-haired baby. I’ll keep the baby here, so she doesn’t get cold out there."

William stood up quickly and nodded, leaving Arielle’s room.

"Lucas, I think I need a soft warm cloth. This baby has been outside long enough that her clothes are cold."

Lucas looked at the baby clothes drying by the fire.

"Do you need a warm bath too, Your Highness?"

"Um.. for that let’s wait for Tania. Tania is preparing food for this baby."

"Very well, Your Majesty. I’ll find it soon, "said Lucas. Receiving a new order from Arielle, the man left her with Sasha who still looked at the baby in admiration.

"Sasha, you can take a chair to sit next to me. Your feet haven’t fully healed, have they?" said Arielle, who felt sorry for Sasha who had been standing by her side to look at the baby in her arms.
