Chapter 239: Arielle’s Tears

"This... is not fair," said Arielle, who had found her courage.

Alexis folded his arms to listen to Arielle. Her breath started to hitch. Her chest rose and fell rapidly. Arielle bit her lower lip hard to keep herself from getting carried away with emotion.

"All of you have seen my mother and still called me an illegitimate child and a witch child. If you guys hate me and my mother that much, why didn’t you throw me away a long time ago? Why do you keep locking me up in the palace?"

Alexis was silent. The man rose from his chair. Again this was all he could do. He didn’t reply to Arielle’s confrontation but went away.

"I... don’t even know my own mother’s face. I never felt the warmth of a father’s embrace. I don’t even know what sin my mother has committed to you, but you poured all your hatred on me. This is so unfair and stifling..."

Alexis stood still and glanced back slightly.

"I don’t care about words like protecting me or those who love me. Because I know it’s all a lie! You just want to feel better for treating my mother badly!"

Arielle bit her lip. She had kept this emotion to herself for decades. Since childhood, she kept these words to herself. But slowly, her fear began to fade with a trembling body.

"I-I hate all of you... from the bottom of my heart," Arielle said in a whisper.

Alexis was still able to hear Arielle’s words just now. With an expressionless face, a single tear fell down Alexis’ cheek.

He muttered, "Hmm, it’s up to you. Whatever you feel means nothing to me, you will marry Duke Pellington no matter what."

Arielle ran, leaving Alexis, who was still standing alone in the garden. Seeing Arielle running while covering her face, Tania and Sasha immediately followed Arielle, who ran out of the park.

Archie and Andrea looked at each other, curious about what they were talking about that made Arielle run away crying.

"What do you think they are talking about?" Andrea asked.

"I don’t know, but it looks really intense," Archie replied, looking suspiciously at Alexis, who was still standing where he was.

"Well. Whatever it is, I don’t care," replied Andrea, who then left the balcony. Archie still had Alexis in his eyes, and he was still in his place. The man turned around, and coincidentally their eyes met.

Even though the distance between the garden and the balcony where he was standing was quite far but Archie could tell that Alexis was staring at him intently.

Archie just looked down and then turned away from Alexis.

When she arrived at her room, Arielle took off her dress which felt increasingly suffocating her. Sasha waited in front of the room while waiting for Tania to help Arielle take off the princess’s dress.

Tania didn’t ask what made Arielle cry. The girl was still shedding tears and violently tugged at the straps of the corset. Tania gently touched Arielle’s hand to calm down.

The old woman grasped the princess’s hand, giving her strength. Slowly, Tania unhooked the corset strap, and Arielle breathed a sigh of relief again.

After Tania put on sleepwear for Arielle, she ordered Sasha to make hot tea to help Arielle calm down.

Tania didn’t know what Arielle was talking about with Duke Pellington and Prince Alexis but seeing the princess sobbing like this really hurt. Tania approached Arielle and hugged the girl tightly.

"I ... already know my mother’s name," Arielle said between her tears.

Tania was silent and didn’t reply. She met the princess’ mother in the village they had visited a few days ago. Tania was from that village. One day, they found a woman who was heavily pregnant, sleeping in front of the church.

The woman named Mirabelle stayed at Tania’s house for several months. And they were working together as maids at an inn. While they were praying in the church, Mirabelle began to feel pain in her stomach. In the last moments, before the woman gave birth, she just told Tania that she had a husband.

However, who would have thought that the husband of the woman they found was actually the king. King Hugo arrived late because soon after giving birth to her little daughter, Mirabelle breathed her last.

King Hugo, who saw Tania carrying little Arielle, took the woman with him to the palace, with an agreement to keep Arielle safe in the palace, and not to say anything about her mother.

Even after nineteen years had passed, Tania did not dare to reveal the name of the Princess’s mother and now, the girl was crying sadly after being told what her mother’s name was.

"Her name was Mirabelle. And she... was a servant in my father’s manor."

Tania did not know about it. She knew nothing about Mirabelle’s past. She preferred to be quiet too. She didn’t want to talk about who she was or what she was doing.

"I... am not the daughter of a prostitute or a witch."

Slowly, her lips trembled as she held back tears. Arielle’s cry this time reminded her of the time when the child sobbed because her older siblings called her an illegitimate child or a witch’s child. One by one, tears rolled down her cheeks.

Tania shook her head. Mirabelle was far from being a prostitute or a witch. She was just a woman who loved the wrong man. Even though she was quiet, she was very friendly and kind. She did not hesitate to help other people or animals. Arielle inherited her mother’s kindness.

"How do you feel right now?" asked Tania quietly while stroking Arielle’s hair.

Arielle shook her head. "I do not know. My heart feels empty and also relieved.... I ... had never seen my mother’s face, never heard her voice or felt the warmth of her embrace. So I don’t know what to feel. It’s just that my heart feels lighter after knowing my mother’s name."

Tania could understand what Arielle meant. For Arielle, maybe Mirabelle was just a stranger who happened to give birth to her. That was it. Mirabelle was never present in the girl’s life. There was not even a first hug from Mirabelle for Arielle because the woman breathed her last just as Arielle was born.
