Loving The Cursed Werewolf King-Chapter 238: Alexis And Arielle
Arielle walked slowly towards Alexis, who was waiting for her.
"Sorry, Duke Pellington, to interrupt your time. There’s something I need to talk to my sister about," Alexis spoke politely, but there was a hint of coldness in his voice.
"It’s okay, Your Highness. Then I’ll excuse myself."
Alexis walked to a garden bench and sat there. Arielle was still standing waiting for her brother to immediately speak. The dress she was wearing was getting tighter, and Arielle couldn’t last much longer.
Arielle thought that there was nothing more to discuss with Alexis. Their conversation this afternoon still made Arielle feel sad because her greedy brother said that this was all to protect her. If they really protected her, then there was no way they would accept the proposal of someone like Duke Pellington.
"What did you talk to Duke Pellington about?" asked Alexis.
"Nothing," answered Arielle curtly. Her head was lowered as she looked at her interlocked fingers to fight her nervousness.
"Are you sure?"
"I... still can’t believe that... Father accepted the proposal of someone even older than my mom to propose to me. I just feel a little uncomfortable."
"Your mother? Ah... you guys talking about Miss Mirabelle?"
Arielle immediately raised her head, not understanding. She looked at Alexis, who was so casually mentioning her mother’s name. So far, they had kept silent about who her mother was. After nineteen years, Arielle only heard her mother’s name out of her brother’s mouth today.
"You know my mother?" asked Arielle in disbelief.
"A little bit. Miss Mirabelle lived in the palace a few months and then she ran away."
"My mother lived in the palace?"
Duke Pellington never said her mother had ever lived in the palace. Arielle thought her mother remained a servant in her father’s manor and gave birth there. If her mother had lived in the palace, it meant that all her family had seen and knew who her mother was, right?
Then why did they just shut up and acted like she was the child of prostitutes on the outskirts of the village? They even said that her mother was a witch.
Alexis could see Arielle’s eyes slowly shedding tears.
"Your mother is neither a prostitute nor a witch, Arielle. She was a villager who married my father. She was then invited to live in the palace."
"Marry? Does that mean I’m not an illegitimate child?"
Alexis shook his head. Arielle still remembered very well the incident several years ago when Queen Rosalie called her the illegitimate child of a village prostitute.
"Why did they do it? What did I do wrong to make them act like this?"
"That’s called jealousy, Arielle. Mirabelle’s presence makes Father’s other wives jealous because of the special treatment that Mirabelle received. My mother... who had been crowned a queen, was always treated poorly by Father. He spoiled Mirabelle a lot. Father loved Mirabelle so much that the women in the palace ostracized your mother."
There was a hint of sadness in Alexis’ voice.
"Impossible. Father can’t possibly love my mother," said Arielle, who couldn’t believe a single word from Alexis’s mouth.
What Alexis said must have been a mere gibberish. King Hugo could not love anyone. If the man loved her mother, why did he hate Arielle so much?
"It’s up to you to believe it or not. But I speak from what I had seen for myself. Your mother ran away from the palace. Our father tried looking for her all over Nieverdell but couldn’t find her until one day he came home with you. The hatred of the people in the palace for your mother is now transferred to you. That’s why they treat you so poorly."
"And Father didn’t do anything about it?"
"Because he is a coward, Arielle."
"Huh?"
Alexis shook his head. His father was a coward. He didn’t want to be responsible for what he did. Alexis knew that the old man still loved Mirabelle and had regrets for the rest of his life.
The reason Mirabelle left the palace was his father. The king was too possessive. He forced Mirabelle to stay by his side even though his other wives showed their hatred for her.
Finally, Mirabelle had to endure the hatred of his other wives. King Hugo could never do anything considering his other wives’ family was quite influential. Therefore the man could only remain silent and tie Mirabelle by his side.
"I just don’t want something like what happened to Mirabelle to happen again. Day by day, his heart is getting closed, and forgets your presence."
Alexis was quite a sentimental person. He could see that his father didn’t want, something like Mirabelle’s escape to happen to Arielle again. The man actually distanced himself from Arielle and minimized contact with her so that his wives would no longer bully Arielle.
However, that was the wrong move. The hatred of the palace people couldn’t be quelled just because the king didn’t show any concern for Arielle. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
Their hatred was already ingrained, and every time they saw Arielle, it reminded them of Mirabelle. The bullying did not stop with them. They taught their children to participate in bullying Arielle.
Alexis just stood still and watched. He also had a hand in making Arielle suffer. Because of him, Mirabelle had to leave the palace.
Maybe the other thing that made Mirabelle leave was... because at that time, Alexis kicked her out.
Alexis was still a child brainwashed by his mother. He was very annoyed with Mirabelle, who said that she wanted her child to become a king. Alexis was worried. What if Mirabelle’s words were heard by others, and would only get her in more trouble?
In Mirabelle’s few months at the palace, it was Alexis who became her friend. Alexis became her chat partner, but Mirabelle had spoken too late by then. Alexis’ emotions were spurred, and accidentally said words that hurt the woman’s heart.
He regretted those words when Mirabelle left, but it was already too late.
