Chapter 98: Chapter 98: "Your ex-boyfriend is here, he’s been waiting for you for over an hour.

To a child, their parents are the most important people in the world.

It’s hard for anyone to believe their own parents could have moral failings.

Rory Linden watched Sean Harrison’s brow furrow as she continued, "Your mother said it was my mother who seduced your father. She said not only did the family’s nanny witness it, but your father also admitted to it himself. She claims to have proof."

Sean Harrison was silent for a moment before speaking. "Are you trying to find the former servants of the Harrington Family? I can see if I can help you find them."

"It’s okay. I’ll have dinner with Miles Harrison on Saturday first and get Auntie Vincent’s contact information."

Rory Linden had decided to go through with the dinner with Miles Harrison.

For her, it was the simplest and fastest way.

Aside from Auntie Vincent, most of the nannies had left the Harrington Family at least a decade ago.

In a country as vast as Celestria, finding someone was easier said than done.

-

Saturday arrived in a flash.

Rory Linden arrived at the hospital early to check on her patient’s various physical conditions and confirm they were fit for surgery.

The surgery began at nine in the morning.

It lasted for a total of eight hours. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

Although some new issues arose during the procedure, it was very smooth overall.

As Rory Linden was making the final sutures, Keith Hawthorne stood beside her.

He asked, "Rory Linden, have you ever considered leaving Elysian Hospital?"

Rory’s hands didn’t stop moving, but her heart began to race. "Director, did I do something wrong? If there are any issues, please tell me. I can change."

"No," Keith Hawthorne explained. "With your talent, if you were at a public hospital, you’d be performing this kind of high-difficulty surgery after just a few more years of training. Staying at Elysian is holding back your growth."

Rory knew this was true.

She wasn’t afraid of hard work.

She had chosen Elysian simply for the money.

Elysian’s patients were all either wealthy or powerful.

These people, even for something as simple as an appendectomy, would demand an experienced director to perform the surgery.

Even an associate director would be looked down upon.

Let alone a young, regular doctor like Rory Linden.

The anesthesiologist for today’s surgery was Evan Hollis.

"That’s what happened with that one surgery, wasn’t it? It was just a cardiac stent procedure. The patient was about to be wheeled into the OR when the family suddenly demanded a different doctor, insisting on Director Hawthorne."

Evan Hollis couldn’t help but feel it was unfair to Rory.

This had just happened yesterday.

It was a very routine cardiac stent procedure, one that Rory had performed countless times.

Before the surgery, Rory had communicated with the patient and their family many times.

But just as the patient was about to enter the operating room, the family suddenly demanded a different doctor.

They kicked up a fuss, claiming Elysian Hospital was using them as practice for a new doctor.

In the end, it really was Keith Hawthorne who performed the surgery.

Something like this would never happen in a regular public hospital.

"I..." Rory Linden gave an awkward laugh. "I’m a bit short on cash, so I plan to work here for another year."

"I’ll lend you the money."

Keith Hawthorne couldn’t believe that was the reason Rory was staying here!

"No, thank you. I was already planning on switching hospitals anyway," Rory explained. "Just one more year. It won’t set me back too much."

Keith Hawthorne sighed. "Alright, then. Just let me know when you’ve made up your mind. I can help you get into whichever hospital you want."

"Thank you, Director."

As Rory spoke, she also completed the final touches of the surgery.

Only then did Evan Hollis speak up. "Dr. Linden, if you’re thinking about a hospital abroad, you can tell me too. I have connections and can get you an introduction. The top surgeons at private hospitals overseas earn salaries dozens of times higher than here, and you’d get to work with a lot of cutting-edge equipment."

"Thank you, Dr. Hollis. If I need it, I’ll definitely ask you."

Rory knew that some private hospitals abroad paid very well.

She had seriously considered it back then.

Unfortunately, Miles Harrison hadn’t approved.

’Looking back now, giving up the chance to go abroad for a man like him was an incredibly stupid decision.’

Keith Hawthorne left the operating room first.

Rory Linden accompanied Evan Hollis in the observation room to check on the patient’s condition.

It wasn’t until after six o’clock that she prepared to return to her office.

She had just reached the sixth-floor lobby when a young nurse waved at her.

"What is it?"

Rory Linden stretched her arms as she walked over.

The young nurse pointed toward the hallway and said in a low voice, "Dr. Linden, your ex-boyfriend is here. He’s been waiting for you for over an hour."

’An ex-boyfriend?’

Rory Linden froze for a second before realizing it had to be Miles Harrison!

She had arranged to meet Miles Harrison at a restaurant.

She had assumed they would just meet at the restaurant directly. She never expected him to actually show up at the hospital!

Rory suddenly found the situation ridiculous.

They had dated for four years, and Miles Harrison had almost never once come to visit her here.

But after they broke up, he started coming quite frequently.

With both hands in the pockets of her white coat, Rory walked to the entrance of the hallway and saw Miles Harrison standing there.

The man was leaning against the wall.

He was wearing a casual suit without a tie, a multicolored silk scarf fastened at his collar instead.

From where Rory stood, she could see his profile.

Miles Harrison wasn’t bad-looking; his high-bridged nose made his profile look particularly striking and three-dimensional.

It was just that Rory saw Sean Harrison every day.

Looking at Miles now, he just seemed a bit bland.

"Rory!" Miles Harrison noticed Rory out of the corner of his eye and quickly straightened his clothes. "You’re here. Are you about to get off work? Hurry and change so we can go."

Rory was still wearing scrubs under her white coat.

She had no choice but to explain, "Young Master Harrison, after I change, I still have to do my rounds in the wards before I can leave. Could I trouble you to wait for me downstairs?"

"I’ll wait for you here."

Miles Harrison showed no intention of leaving.

Rory was forced to be blunt. "Young Master Harrison, everyone in this hospital knows we’ve broken up. You have a fiancée, and my boyfriend is your uncle. I hope you won’t do things that put me in an awkward position."

If they hadn’t broken up back then...

If Miles Harrison had come to the hospital to pick her up from work, she would have been overjoyed.

But alas, there were no ’if onlys’.

Doing the right thing at the wrong time only backfires.

"Rory, I..."

"Young Master Harrison, if you had even the slightest consideration for me, you would realize that what you’re doing right now is only causing me trouble."

Rory knew Miles Harrison well.

This young master was just like that.

He always acted solely from his own perspective.

Always so self-righteous.

However, she couldn’t be bothered to waste her breath on him and turned to enter her office to change.

When she came out of her office again, Miles Harrison was gone.

Rory first did her rounds, then took off her white coat and took the elevator downstairs.

Miles Harrison’s car was parked in a temporary spot in front of the inpatient building.

When the man saw Rory emerge, he picked up a bouquet of flowers from the passenger seat and walked toward her.

He approached and thrust the flowers into her arms.

"Rory, flowers for you. Do you like them?"

Miles Harrison started to let go, only to realize Rory hadn’t taken the flowers at all.

"Young Master Harrison, I have a boyfriend. I don’t need anyone else buying me flowers. I’m having dinner with you only because I want Auntie Vincent’s contact information."

Rory found Miles Harrison more and more laughable.

When they were dating, the man had never once given her flowers.

Now that they were broken up, he was falling all over himself to do the things a couple should do.

"Rory, I don’t think we need to be like this. Even if we can’t be like we were before, can’t we at least be regular friends?"

Miles Harrison tentatively pushed the flowers toward her again.

Rory still didn’t take them.

She looked down at the bouquet before her and came to a realization:

"No wonder you’re always surrounded by women, Young Master Harrison. So, in your eyes, giving flowers and making high-profile appearances at someone’s workplace are just things ’regular friends’ do."
